Tennis will never be what it was with Fedalovic... but it will still be worth watching I'm sure

I hope so. The personality/epicness void dropoff from them to everyone else is HUGE. Plus Venus will be gone, and the WTA is so uninteresting without her to me. Ill try lol

Extremely tough choice.

Nadal at 18 slams is closer than he's ever been to Roger, while showing no signs of slowing down on clay at least. Just needs another easy draw elsewhere, and he's pretty much a lock to at least equal Fed (assuming the latter doesn't add to his slam count as well, of course).

Nevertheless, I think the above is preferable to Novak Djokovic reaching 16 *and* achieving a second NCYGS. He too would be very likely to finish at least within touching distance of Fed's slam total, and there is no "skewed by clay" argument to fall back on. The man would have dominated across all surfaces - arguably to a greater degree than Fed himself - and would have a similar/more time spent at No 1.

Thus I - barely - voted for Nadal.

For the preservation of men's tennis. it must be Rafa that wins FO. If Novak wins then he potentially becomes GOAT without transcending the sport the way Roger & Rafa has. Their rivalry and GOAT debates were the most compelling stories in tennis that attracted non tennis fans to the sport. Novak doesn't have that same appeal and has a robotic and stale dominance which hurts the sport badly. I think Thiem can drive him to 5 sets but may fold in the clutch points.

Rafa must win to have any chance of catching Roger. Tbh i think the losses of AO17, and WIM18 may have cost him that goal, but if he doesn't win FO19 then that's it. He must win for himself and most importantly for the sport. He saved tennis once when emerging during Fed's dominance of the game, now he must do it again.

Please Rafa win, not Djokovic.

Superb post. I and many other long term tennis observers wholeheartedly agree with you.

It'll be extremely hard to replace fadalovic, people should appreciate them while they're here even if they're not fans of all of them, they've all made each other better and defined eachother's career. Cant believe Frd is about to play a RG semi at 37 vs Nadal who himself is 33....

But I remember tennis before them, just about... and afterwards maybe it will be a bit more unpredictable with less to be invested for me, and that might be fun in it's own way

Surprised this thread hasn't been created yet (if it has, my bad, I haven't come across it).

Q: Fed fans, would you rather Nole win and get the DCGS and second Nole slam and 16 slams OR Rafa win and get his 12th FO and get to 18 slams?

Personally, I would prefer Rafa winning for a few reasons:

1) Nole getting the DCGS and second Nole slam is a big freaking deal. Plus he'd only be 4 away from Fed then and seemingly plenty of time to get a 'boat'load more.
2) If Rafa wins, yes he'd be at 18, but adding another French, at least from my perspective, just adds more to his clay legacy than his overall lagacy as a tennis player. And he's less likely than Nole to win away from the French.

3) I like Rafa more than Nole, so I'd be happier for Rafa than I would be for Djokovic.

Damn, who thought they'd still all be playing 12 years later?

Venus' longevity is outstanding, she was in the USO final back in 1997. That was 22 years ago. I do think she had her final run back in 2017, sadly got destroyed in both finals she played, still to play two slam finals that late in the game is remarkable.

I remember Djokovic getting majority of the support for the AO final. Were folks far more afraid of Nadal's threat to the record than now? Looks like the tune has changed.
I was in no mood to hear about "DOUBLE CAREER SLAM" in January. Just like I'm in no mood to hear about "2nd NOLE SLAM" now. Hence the change in tune.

And I think Australia played a big part in easing Fed fan's nerves about Nadal reaching 20, because it's clearly become a massive challenge for him to win any slam off-clay with Novak around. So even if he wins #18 this weekend, it might take another year to reach 19 and another year after that to reach 20. And a lot can happen in 2 years, which make his odds a lot lower than if he'd won Australia.

Every slam , Doesn’t matter which one adds to a players overall legacy

It doesn't really matter either way because Rafa and Djoker will both pass Fed, but I think it is important for Rafa to win this one because Djoker will be heavily favoured (injury and motivation issues aside) to pick up Wimby and the USO. If that scenario plays out it will be 20-18-17 at the end of the year.

Nadal tbh, especially if his match with Fed is close

It really is crazy that shes still around even if shes not winning slams

Most Federer fans should choose Nadal win here. Another Nole Slam will be huge and many will start considering Novak the GOAT. A Nadal win would still have Nadal behind Federer. And he's unlikely to stay fit for next 2-3 years to win more Slams, especially outside of RG, mainly due to his health and age.

I gotta go with Rafa. Nole is getting too close to Fed. If Djoker can grind out a win on his worst surface, then he will likely have enough in the tank to win enough slam titles on his best surfaces to catch Fed.

Fed needs a miracle run at Wimbledon to stop the bleeding here. This is getting way too close for comfort.

20-18-15 looks better to me than 20-17-16, given how insane Djoker is now.

16 slams, 2 NCYGS’s, likely most weeks at #1, most YE #1. Yeah. That would be getting way too scary. I will man up and admit it. All of this means that if Djoker tied Fed at 20, then I would have no choice but to give the tiebreaker to Djoker.

Djoker is quite likable. But I don’t want him passing Fed. He definitely worries me more than Nadal does right now.

I want Fed to win RG. If he fails, Djokovic. Two of my favorite players. Thiem . So, there you go. Nothing against Rafa it's just the way I like it :). I also don't care if Djokovic wins more majors than Fed. It's childish. If he did kudos to him. Let's be objective and not little fangirls.

I would rather see double career slam and 2x four in a row than just Rafa winning another RG. One is historical, one is just routine.

Both are historical. In fact 2 × 4 in a row has already been done before (Laver) while 12 x 1 has never been done before. And in the future, it is far more likely to see another 2 x 4, than another 12 x 1. Something impossible to repeat = more difficult, therefore more relevant. The 2 x 4 shows more versatility, but the 12 x 1 is more difficult to repeat.

Anyhow, no need to debate this. Djokovic already lost to Thiem. Fed fans will support Thiem :).
