Federer Fans - Would you rather: he never reaches another Grand Slam 4th Round or a Brutal, Painful Grand Slam final loss (like 2019 Wimbledon final)?

If the latter option occurs, it basically means Novak Djokovic will be barely beating a 40-year old man.

(I only expect the Serb to be able to overcome the Swiss in a slam final)

Whoever votes for the first option is nuts lol...

Not when you don't have an option.

I was forced to vote for the 1st option because I've had enough of the 'age' argument and can't stand anymore of that should Federer reach another final and lose to Djokovic.

I personally handled losses such as those to Seppi or Stakovsky (albeit I almost smashed a fine bottle of whisky after Stakovsky) better than those 40-15s. I was over them the next day. Wimby 19 F urks me to this day. So yeah, I voted the first option.

Final. He could go out with a legendary run like Connors and everyone would remember him with affection if he went out in an epic final, even if it was a brutal loss. If OP means brutal as in 1, 3, 0, then 4th round.

The cruel defeat in the final doesn't have to be against Djokovic. It could even be vs one of the younger players than finally defeat the big3 en route to their first slam

How can this even be a question? A final is a still good result, and a loss before round 4 is always brutal and painful.

Of course winning is always best, but if not winning then coming as close as possible is second best. I actually liked the 2019 Wimbledon final. Yes, the loss hurt, but it was my 9th favourite Wimbledon as a Federer fan, no doubt about that.

Thing is, most honest tennis fans, experts and analysts know he’s 3rd best of the big3.

so would you rather see less fed, or one final epic run followed by his usual Djokovic beating at Wimbledon? A loss makes no difference as we know he’s 3rd wheel anyway. Go out a legend with an epic run aged 40.

Poor Fed, he really thought he was gonna go out as the head and shoulder GOAT above all past greats. I mean, true, Pete was surpassed in a relatively quick 9 years, but at least he had 7 years of retirement to feel like GOAT. Roger may be surpassed before he even retires

Roger claimed GOAThood in 2009. That’s over 11 years until it has been threatened. At least he got to enjoy it a lil longer than Pete.

How do you know in fourth round that he will progress to Final and suffer painful loss? I would always want him go deep as possible. If there is window of opportunity - he might win.

He never got to enjoy it. He always had two players on his heels. People questioning his GOAThood as early as 2009 actually (Mac), and more vocally in 2012 b/of h2h with Rafa.
Pete got to sit on a throne for 10, 8 of them retired years.

A near-40 year old making a slam final? Sign me up 8 days a week and twice on Sunday. Heck, I’d be satisfied with a slam QF and ecstatic with a slam SF.

It's never going to be unanimous, but Federer definitely had the majority on his side for a good long while there, same as Pete. Pete was never an unquestioned GOAT. There were always people who had Laver above him and still have it that way to this day.

I don't think being retired makes you enjoy it any more than if you're still playing. While Roger was considered the GOAT he still got to fly around the world and have arenas erupt over his appearance. I don't think Pete enjoyed his GOAT days any more. He was probably chilling at home not even thinking about it.

Only haters ever questioned his GOAThood all these years. Rafa at the time was never going to be considered GOAT just because of his superior H2H and clay status. Way too many gaps in his resume. Even now at 20 apiece, the majority would still claim RF ahead. Nadal would need to be another 1-2 slams clear to make up for all the holes in his resume. Now Djokovic certainly would have a case at 20 apiece, due to his Federesque-like well-balanced resume.
