FORBES - Federer and Nike have been joined at the hip since the Swiss tennis ace turned pro in 1998. The partnership has been lucrative for both sides, with Nike using Federer to front its tennis business while he racked up a record 20 Grand Slam singles titles. Federer earned in the neighborhood of $150 million from the $35 billion-in-revenue sports giant over the past two decades.

LeBron James and Cristiano Ronaldo are the only athletes on the planet with comparable endorsement incomes to Federer over the last 12 months, but the Uniqlo deal separates Federer from his fellow global sports icons. His endorsement earnings should top $70 million over the next 12 months, with appearance fees adding even more. The only two athletes to ever reach that annual high-water mark from corporate partners are Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods.

Uniqlo has gotten so big beyond Japan that, for the first time, it has more sales outside its home country than in it.

While Uniqlo has been a Japanese favorite for more than a decade, outside of Japan its popularity is more recent. The last five years is really when its international sales started to take off, as the company has aggressively expanded across the globe in a bid to become the world’s biggest clothing maker. It’s still well behind H&M and Zara in sales, but growing quickly.

One place where the company hasn’t done quite as well as it has wanted is the US. While it was quickly embraced in New York, where it opened its first store in 2006, Uniqlo has struggled to gain traction outside the city and urban areas such as San Francisco since it started expanding across the country in 2012. Its recent quarter, however, marked a positive turn.

In the meantime, Uniqlo is thriving in plenty of other places. In China and Korea, its thermal clothes are big sellers. In Southeast Asia and Oceania, its finding an audience in the year-round heat for summer items. And its global march just keeps on going.

Federer’s name recognition boosts Uniqlo’s global expansion efforts, especially in Europe, where the brand is opening new stores.

Where is Nadal on the endorsements list? Why isn't he higher than Federer given that he has more facebook followers?

Facebook and Instagram followers are only relevant within a certain age group. Federers appeal extends from kids through to those ladies who wear all the RF gear at his matches. I Follow Federer on Facebook but I notice that most of the people I know don't, and many of them are Federer fans.

Maybe Nike will go back to making actual good products, not just 'high fashion' stuff made from B-grade materials? Maybe?
