I'm shuddering just thinking of the Fed bashing threads that will be created after Rafa equals 20...
And let's put the shoe on the other foot. When Roger won #17, #18, #19 or #20, did any Roger fan start an anti-Rafa thread? It's almost laughable how Roger occupies space in their heads 24/7. When Fed wins a slam, the last thing I would ever think to do it start a hate thread on some other player. Yet it's inevitably the first thing they do. A psychologist would have a field day explaining how enmity/hate rules a fan base instead of exultation and pure joy at winning #19. I exclude Michael Nadal, @Azure and @Rafa.the.Magnificent from this, all of whom are well-adjusted and fun posters. (y)

Lol, rest assured my friend. What is lost in this cyclone of a USO19 is that Nadl has cleared Djokr by 3 now. Many, and I mean many, thought that Djokr would win it pre-tourney AND during the tourney. Instead of 20-18-17, it's now 20-19-16, so Djokr needs to win 4 just to pass Nadl instead of 2. It's one slam, but it just made it very hard for Djoker to catch 20 now bc Rafa will be even motivated than before to catch 20 himself as it is finally, truly within reach. So, not only does Djokr have to win one more by not winning this one, 20 may not be the mark that Djokr needs to catch, but 21 or 22. By extension, THAT was the main reason WB19 hurts so bad, not just the 2 CPs.

But what happened, happened, no?

And it's ironic that Nadl is the one we have to thank for saving the #1-weeks record. As for the slam record, I still think Fedr could keep it by winning 1-2 more slams as my originally predicted Fedr#22.

Things happen out of our control, but there are always positives to take. Sure, Fedr shutting down the slam race would be ideal for us Fedfans. But... if he somehow still holds it by the end, the story would be so much more compelling by doing it at such an old age under such circumstances. Sports are unpredictable. And that's why they're so great!
Well, the weeks at #1 record isn’t safe yet. Djokovic can still take the YE1.

Never assume anything in tennis, Rafa may never win another major, Fed could conceivably win another. Nobody predicted Borg leaving the game at 26, few foresaw Nole's emotional meltdown from the USO 2016-Wimbledon 2018. If Rafa passes Fed's slam mark, let's discuss it when and if it happens. Lots of tennis to be played before RG 2020.

Yeah, crazy how instead of celebrating a slam win, they're busy trying to denigrate Fed... but nothing new, I guess.

Hope everything’s okay.

I don’t understand why people deactivate/disable (if that’s what happened). Totally get breaks. Or even just not using the site...

I might've stuck around here long enough to actually witness the disbanding of the Federer faithful.

Am I going to have to take on these mindless hordes singlehandedly in the waning days? 8-B
Ignore most of them, since most are utterly ignore-worthy. ;) And I will gently quibble and maintain that the Fed faithful remain always steady. They don't flee in disgust after Wimbledon or turn on Roger because Dimitrov finally beat him. Laver Cup's coming up in 2 weeks, then Shanghai, Basel and the YEC, I assumed Fed fans are concentrating on all that. If not, they should be. :)

Shanghai can't get here fast enough.

Which is worse: antagonism or apathy?

Will be weird if people stop caring.
It is not the "not caring" that has anything to do with it. However, I have not been here long so I dont know what it was like when Fed was winning slams or had a big lead in the slams. However, I have noticed it is not just Rafa, or just Djoker fans that try to squash and belittle Fed's achievements. It is both of the fan bases, and they gang up. Not sure why the hate for him? Never noticed this in general before I came here.

Anytime you mention something that even puts Fed as the best or near the best at anything, there is always someone (usually in groups) that come after you. So I just try to enjoy the casual tennis talk and stay away from the fight. However, it gets tougher and tougher to let things slide when I read these boards. Some, and I am pretty sure you know the guys I am referring to, simply have no understanding of tennis beyond their blinded fandom.

You are right about the tag-teaming. It's actually a bit sad. But strength in numbers, they say.

And I only go back to around the turn of 2016. So, RF was well past prime by then.

There was crazy hostility from the get-go. Most can't argue their way out of a paper bag, tho. ;)

So, hopefully they've learned some valuable lessons. :)

Yep, and it is real hard for me sometimes as I am a Fed fan first, but like Rafa (grown on me for many reasons over the years). I know I know, you dont like him. But for me there are times where I see some Rafa fans say things and I am thinking that is a double standard. However, every single time I bring it up I become a "Rafa" hater and a fake fan of his.

Once again, something that never was an issue for a decade plus until I came here.

Example A: Fed supposedly won many slams in a weak era (people can debate this, and I tend to think it was weaker but not weak). They use this and dismiss those years like they did not exists. But at the same time, Rafa is doing the same thing now with Thiem twice, Anderson, and now Med (combined zero slams and never reached top 3 yet). Who knows who his future slams will be against. Fed on the other hand beat Roddick (slam winner and former number one), Hewitt (two time slam winner and reached number one), and Safin (two time slam winner and reached number one). Seems like a double standard.

Example B: Age is meaningless and Fed has got better. Now Rafa is winning at an older age and it is impressive and he has got worse.

Oh yeah.

Been there, done that on those.

In the final analysis, Federer was facing youthful stallions and not decrepit has-beens (like some we know ;) ). But I don't intend to rehash a "weak era" discussion in Federer News.

Nadal's adopted a "by hook or by crook" M.O.

C'est la vie. That was his choice.

All I know is it would be nice to be present on these boards for one big victory. I do think WTF's (regardless of the new trend to downplay it), to me would be a pretty awesome thing if Fed were to snag it. Would soften some of the blows from this year.

Say what guys, I feel optimistic about Federer's chances for the fall season and also AO and Wimbledon next year. The setbacks should only spur him on. The fall season will be critical in Federer starting the next season well....I am just getting this tiny feeling that Federer will win the WTF this year....Not sure if that means much since I am not basing this of anything and I have spectacularly wrong before....But something tells me he's going to have fantastic fall season topping it off with a WTF win.....

Some numbers:

The maximum Federer can get to is 9510 pts.

Wapha is on 9225 already.

Djokovic on 9865 is defending 2600 pts.

Assuming Federer wins out & Djokovic reaches the final in each event (BIIIIIIIIG IF), Wapha can seal yr end no 1 with just 2 wins at WTF.

One of Federer's streaks of being in the top 2 for at least 1 week of the calendar year every year since 2003 is in serious jeopardy.

A very interesting 10 weeks awaits.
