Really good match against Stan. Stan moved averagely, hit the FH well, and served quite well. He served 73% first serves on, top 6 in his hard court career. When Stan serves 70%+ on first served, he’s 8-3 on hard courts, the losses coming in 2007 and 2008 to Murray and 2011 to Jarkko.
1. Federer FH and BH depth was consistent all night. He was camped on that baseline all night 2017 style.
2. Tried to take BH early plenty of times (2017 style) and just failed to connect. Good signs, though.
3. That second serve had an awful lot of kick to it. The kicker to Stan’s BH on the AD side killed Stan as it always does.

Did you notice the lack of grunts in this match on serve from Fed? Or was I not paying attention? Because when I did pay attention, I did not hear a sound. When Fed plays silently, he's most dangerous.

Yeah, he played well against Stan, better than I expected.If he manages to maintain his level, he could win a 6th IW, especially now with Djokovic out.I don't think he can play as good as in 2017 AO-WB period and in the case this is his best now, I am happy with it

Always struck by how patiently Roger answers these dumb questions from reporters. I say dumb because there's nothing new, substantive or even remotely relevant to what might be on fan's minds... "do you change your mindset when playing against Stan?", "you said you want to play clay, what is fun about clay to you?"... I mean come on.

Each time Fed enters a tournament these days, I feel like I don't really mind whether he wins or loses after all he's achieved.
Then he gets to the latter stages, and I start thinking what if ...
Got to remember that Nadal is still in his path, and Hurkacz could be dangerous, in good form and they've never played.
Whoever is in the final will be in good form also.

Didn't watch but I've noticed Roger does get grunty when he's angry at himself for a poor performance or having physical problems. A quiet Roger is a happy Roger.

2019 is the 8th time Fedr is 12-1 to start. He reached at least one slam finals in 6 of 7 years previously (only year missing was in 2002, before he made his first slam finals), winning slam(s) in 4 of those 6 years.

But...
Fedr was crap most of IW18. It stung to see him lose IW18, but he was lucky to get MPs against Delpo bc he could've easily lost in straights with that form. He later revealed long after grass season that he injured his hand early doors on grass, and it took him months (up until Shanghai18-ish against Nishi, then at Bercy18 against Djokr) to find some of his form back. Early 2019 loses out to early 2018 bc he won AO18 but Fed's in better form than early 2018 atm, imo. We'll see. At least I don't think he'll do worse than IW18-Shanghai18 for the same time frame this year.

So unless Thiem wins the title in IW, Fed will remain top 4 going into Miami, where he has few points to defend. Things are looking good for a top 4 Wimbledon seeding.
A win here, a decent result in Miami and a good grass court season would go some way towards keeping him in the top 4 for a good while, and to qualify for 2019 WTF.
As long as Roger stays healthy, I guess there is no way he retires before Tokyo Olympics now. Do we know whether he's definitely going to be able to play, despite DC absence?

). Hindsight is always 20/20, but he would always wonder 'what if' during his time off had he taken it after Stuttgart18. Not to mention the fact that he hasn't played for ~3 months before playing Stuttgart18. Had the hand injury happened around IW/MIA time, it would've been an ez choice.The slam calendar is dumb;

Obviously he'd never skip Wimbledon. But based on how he played in Cincy, that's the tournament he should've skipped. Even though he made the final, that was some of his worst play all year and when his hand was likely bothering him the most (based on how off his FH & return was). He probably didn't want to go into the USO cold, but he should've known he wasn't going to win it anyway and just rolled the dice.

Noone has mentioned anything definitive, but I seem to remember Federer making the comment that at some point the logo will come back to him. Considering that he probably didn't mean when he is retired, and there is not much time from his career left, I assume that he expects it to happen a certain period after he and Nike parted ways. Unfortunately there are no leaks of any Uniqlo items with it that could hint at that happening very soon, so I don't know when that will happen.
I think the contract expired in March of last year. I suppose if there was to a "relaunch" of the logo, it'd come after Miami for the clay portion of the season?[emoji2375]
