Maybe he was just rattled because once he got on-court he realized he'd forgotten to shave.
Not a smooth start nor finish really. But it was his first grass match, so a win is a win. He will need to be better vs Tsonga tomorrow, especially on return of serve.
He will need to have that serve on lockdown to make a deep run at Wimbledon.

It always comforts me when Federer acknowledges the problems we see and is honest about why they're happening. When he's evasive I worry that it's another injury. In this case it just sounds like the old dude needs to get his grass legs back again.

Roger Federer often makes tennis look easy. But even the Swiss star found himself in a ‘Goldilocks’ situation during his 7-6(1), 6-3 victory against John Millman in the first round of the NOVENTI OPEN on Tuesday.
“I am aware that there were way too many errors there. I’ve got to find the right sort of power on the forehand,” Federer said. “Not too soft, not too hard. I’ve got to find the middle ground.”
Federer made an uncharacteristic number of unforced errors off the forehand wing during his first match of the grass-court season. And the 37-year-old knows he’ll need to make adjustments to the relatively lower bounce on this surface compared to when he was competing on clay.
“I was looking for it throughout [with] different balls [compared] to the past few weeks in Paris,” Federer said. “Grass plays different, how much spin I need to put on the ball, how flat I need to go through the ball. So I often played maybe a little bit on the aggressive side in the beginning because I always knew I can pull back a little bit. So of course that shot can only get better. It can’t get worse. There is a level I believe I have on my forehand.”
To be fair to the nine-time Halle champion, he did not play poorly against Millman, who defeated him at last year’s US Open. Federer won 90 per cent (38/42) of his first-serve points and saved the only break point he faced. In the first-set tie-break, the top seed dropped just one point to take command of the match.
“There were definitely some good moments there,” Federer said. “From the baseline all that stuff is only going to get better from here on. So I’m confident there.”
The grass-court season is different than it has been for the past few years for Federer, who competed at the MercedesCup from 2016-18, as he did not play Roland Garros. But after returning to clay for the first time since 2016, Federer is playing a slightly different schedule on grass.
“This is my first match back on the grass. It used to always be here in Halle, my first rounds. It was like back in the days. I always think any way you get through is a good way because the next match will always feel different or better and all that stuff,” Federer said. “Plus I think with this fact of John having beaten me at the US Open, I knew it was going to be tough. So thankfully I wasn’t too nervous.”
Federer now has a 64-7 record in Halle, and he will try to reach his 17th quarter-final at the ATP 500 tournament when he faces former World No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga next.
The Frenchman has won their past two FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings, at 2016 Monte-Carlo and 2014 Canada. But Federer leads their rivalry 11-6, and he has never failed to advance to the last eight at this event.

Anybody else feel uneasy about Tsonga tomorrow? I always feel stressed in their matches. Maybe it has just been a while since Fed beat him, but I am nervous about tomorrow.

Of course I'm uneasy about tomorrow. I taped the Millman match to watch at night. and refused to even watch the line score as it was happening. Clay was fun because I expected nothing and every small win was a huge victory - a loss to be expected _BUT grass. I expect him to win Halle and (to be honest) know I'll be disappointed if he doesn't make it to the SF of Wimbledon.
Yesteday, all my troubles seemed so far away........

But anyway, should be grand. Grass calibration continues. Initial hurdle cleared.

Last year Djoker played Queens Club and then went on to win Wimbledon. This year he's not playing any grass tournaments before Wimbledon

It's true they often skip warm ups, but imo it's not that smart. They may be unlucky and get a tough opponent early on. It's worked for Djokovic though I have to admit.as with @BeatlesFan you too are off my Christmas list.

I have not seen enough of Fed on grass this year to get an idea of what his level could be, but he's pretty much steady Eddy on the serve (service game) so we have to get a feel on how he's returning. His first match was pretty ragged on return. Tsonga may be a good test, and he's hard to break or is when he is playing well.

I don’t buy it though Ann. As number 1 seed, Djokovic will hone his grass technique through the early rounds and be fine by 2nd week. No, if Fed wants this one he’ll need to do it himself...

I really can't stand how the TV feed always misses the serve and changes angles as the guy is serving. Especially on grass, I have to reset after the serve because of the abrupt camera angle change. Real annoying.

I hope he is not having back issues. No zip on serve or groundstrokes. He looks a little disgruntled, maybe because he is not playing great, but he is playing scrappy because he does not have his usual grass level.

I don’t think he is getting into the positions to make the best shot. If he can’t hold serve on grass, that’s big time trouble.
I did mention his serve was so crappy at the RG SF for which I got a lot of flak. He is carrying that into Halle so far.

He was pretty dismal with his ROS and volleying in the Tsonga match, but he held firm and won a match he possibly should have lost. Since he's lost endless, endless matches from a winning position, it's good to win one where Tsonga arguably was the better player.
