What do you make of Federer's comment ?

"Perhaps, if I’m retired from tennis, I will come back and try to play in the Olympic"

Being 35 years old and saying you may retire from a sport that rarely sees people at that age isn't a crazy idea. You make it seem like fed is going to go on forever. All good things come to an end. Nothing lasts forever.

He was joking that the time between now and the next Olympic games would give him time to do that, à la Justin Henin. He actually hopes to continue till then without interruption if he is fit and health. Link to interview below.

Q. Can you tell me something about how strongly you decide on Olympic gold to get your collection of trophies complete and will there be another Olympics in 2016 for you?

ROGER FEDERER: I mean, I hope so. I said it before the tournament that it's not impossible that I could take part in Rio. But right now, I mean, in the meantime I could retire and come back. It's that long of a break (laughter).
It's not front and center in my mind. But, of course, I'd love an Olympic gold in singles. But I am very happy with an Olympic silver in singles, and I already have the gold from Beijing.

So we'll see about Rio. It's a fascinating country. I've never been to Rio. Obviously, I'd love to be part of it. We'll see how it goes.

From his tone in the interview and his gracious ackhnowledgment of Murray's superiority, I would say he is going to retire this year. He seems satisfied with silver as he almost lost to Falla and DP. He seems at peace with the world and has lost the testosterone to destroy his opponents. This is the time to retire.

In that case, thank goodness I got my US Open tix this year.

If he gets 313 weeks and one more slam (preferably wimbledon, beating doper in the final :p) I will let him retire. Oh and it would also be nice
to save 4 match points against djoko at a GS.

Why in hell would he make a stupid joke like that ? He makes it perfectly clear that he will have retired by 2016 and that he may come back for the Rio games.

what is so significant about 313? He already has the record.

Don't worry, Federer is going to be around for a few years yet if he remains healthy and will probably achieve more than any other player in their 30s was able to in the open era.
Agassi won a slam at 32 and was in a GS final at 33 (before that people also won slams at 35+ I believe)

Federer can do it, play until 2016, but it'll be difficult, despite being the greatest at the moment, once again.

the toughest losses are the close matches that you know you could / should have won. I don’t see this as a tough loss for Fed. He just won Wimbledon and is 1 in the world and is obviously not terribly upset after his loss today. The match wasn't close at all, he played poorly and he knows it. Given the entire tournament he's even lucky to have made the finals. He’s going to regroup and come on strong at the US Open and indoor season for sure.

As long as he is healthy and motivated he is going to play. His body will tell him when it's time to stop. The question is, will he listen before he does any long-term damage, a la Agassi?

He's definitely back next year. I don't think he has any plans to retire any time soon, but it's just going to be a year to year thing.

It is because he knows exactly what is the value of the Olympic tennis tournament.

Unlike some of the posters here, who are going crazy every time OG are being mentioned.

He just won Wimbledon this year, he ain't stopping at the end of the year.

He'll play out 2013 that's for sure.

Roger Federer: "Andy was much better than I was today in many aspects of the game. For me, it’s been a great month. I won Wimbledon, became World No. 1 again, and I got silver. Don’t feel too bad for me. I am very, very proud honestly to have won a silver [medal].

"Murray’s an amazing player already. I thought he played a very, very good Wimbledon championship. So for me what I was happy to see is that he didn’t have a let-down after the Wimbledon final. It’s easy to come back, best-of-three, go out third round maybe. You just feel more horrible. But he didn’t do that. He came, he won gold. I think this is how champions react."

On whether he will compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics: "I hope so. I said it before the tournament that it's not impossible that I could take part in Rio. It’s not front and centre in my mind. But, of course, I’d love an Olympic gold in singles.”

Like Haas/Hewitt, Fed can easily play till 35 years and Rio Olympics.

But by then Fed will decline and be out of top 10, may in 30s or 50s. I can't see a top gunner like Fed grinding at the middle tier.

He wouldn't decline that much. There is no new blood. That should keep him in the Top 10 until 35, if he chooses to keep playing that long...and if he stays healthy.

Raonic? Basically Isner with slightly better beginning ground strokes. Dimitrov? Ha. He'll never develop. Tomic? Maturity problems he may never overcome. Ryan Harrison? What's his ceiling, Ferrer?
