First, it was the ladies, now it's the men.

I'm talking about the rise of Russian tennis here. Back in the 2000s, so many Russian female players emerged and started winning a lot of titles and occupied high rankings in WTA. Now, Russian men's tennis seems to follow the path of their female counterpart. Rublev, Khachanov and Medvedev are 3 promising Russian young guns. They have the physical size and power, and already can take on fully grown opponents and give them good run for the money. It seems they are ready to become the next Safins and Kafelnikovs of Russian tennis. I see potential to be the future no.1 in all of them. With Zverev and Kyrgios, they may form the group of dominant players in the future generation. USA should feel envious and try harder to get back the glory days of 80s and 90s!

Not very hard to please, are you? You're not setting the bar too high then?

Everybody wants to crown a country as ascending just because a player or two is doing well. Is Switzerland as a country on the rise in tennis just because they produced Federer and Stanimal? Next you'll be saying Latvia is on the rise because of French champion Ostapenko and Ernests Gul.... well, let's not talk about him.

Hmm, well... I think they have a long way to go, eh? The ladies won 3 of the 4 grand slams in 2004, and occupied 5 of the 8 finalist spots that year.

dont forget that zverev was born in russia, but i think since his parents and brother are germans then he became one aswell, actually prefer him that way, i like watching germans play on home turf, russians dont have many chances to have that privilege as often

on what western side (devoid of Russian influence) is it not greener?

also, the Zverez brothers 'look' German and 'sound' American to me.

Medvedev knocks out Wawrinka to stop his career grand slam. I'm quite positive these 3 Russians will be like Russia's version of 3 musketeers that USA had(USA had 4 of them) in the 90s - Sampras, Agassi, Courier and Chang.

I'll have to disagree with you. In the 2000s, Russian women were coming by the dozen to dominate tennis. East Europeran women to be precise. The primary reason that drove them was the huge money that tennis provides and they had the hunger which girls from western countries didn't have (UK, USA etc.). So they held the rankings, won tournaments, won a lot of prize money. But very few actually won slams, and if so only one or two. (exception is Sharapova who was always different).
If you see their games, it was all similar.. Hit groundstrokes like crazy.

Somehow the same culture with men never followed. In men's tennis, with much more variety and serve being such a factor, never saw the flux of new Russian players. The 3 players you mentioned aren't swarming the ATP tour like girls did

OK pump the brakes. Are you basically stating two of the three Russians you're high on will win 5-15 Slams? There are a lot of rising talents, and I do like the Russian lads, but what makes you think they'll shine above so many of the other rising talents?

Obviously, the way Russian women did it was different from the way their male counterparts are doing it now. Still, there was a moment when a lot of Russian female tennis players suddenly created a renaissance of Russian tennis. This time it is 3 so far, but I can see these lads doing something similar, if not better, for the Russian tennis. These guys are still young and I get the feeling that they will eventually become top 10 players in not too distant future. It is still very early days, but I see the potential.

I don't know how many slams these guys will win - maybe none, who knows? - but I see the potential in them to be top 5 or even no.1 player in the future. As I mentioned, we'll have to wait and see, but I get quite positive vibe from their tennis.

Here goes my 2 cents/

Russians have good athletic genes (tall, strong) and poor opportunities for doing well in life. Combine those two with the fact that Tennis is an individual sport that incentivizes via performance translating into direct earnings, I'm not surprised Russians have flocked to the sport.

The health of a lot of Western peoples has gone backwards rapidly with growing inequality over the last thirty years.

You must be confusing pre-communist Russia with modern Russia; most of the tall and strong genes died out in the forced starvations and world wars

At least you admit the grass is greener outside Russia.

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before times took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
When friends surrounded
The nights of wonder
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some in a tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world
Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river

Russia funds and sponsors talented athletes in tennis

So long as tennis remains an expensive sport expect the futility to continue as talented athletes either choose other sports or players with talent but no financial motive to at the game seek other careers

McEnroe really like Khachanov at Wimby, but too just too bulky to be a top player.
Rublev is a lot of fun, but his movement just not fast enough to a great player.
Both nice players with nice games.

Medvedev has got the most potential. Very much like Zverev with a tall, lean build. Possibly a better returner than Zverev. The Medvedev serve is relatively weak, but it should come along. Good chance of cracking top 10.

No love for Donskoy? One of only two players to beat Fed this year, and he had to fight off like 4 match points too! ;)
