Former NCAA Div III National Champion - AMA

Doing this for a friend. As the title says this is a “ask me anything” post:

A little about myself - I’m a former DIII college tennis player who played #1 singles and #1 doubles for my team all 4 years. I achieved All-American and All-Academic accolades all 4 years, won 3 NCAA doubles championships and was ranked #2 in the nation for DIII singles and #1 for doubles.

I started playing tennis when I was 8 years old, played junior tennis tournaments every weekend, and achieved an 18s ranking of 13 in California and 36 nationally. I was homeschooled all of high school to allow for more tournament play and practice time, normally playing 6 hours a day and traveling to Rick Macci’s tennis academy in FL 4 times a year. I’ve definitely experienced a lot over my tennis career, learned a lot and am willing to share some insights! Currently playing ALTA tennis in Atlanta.

Very nice to meet you Jordan! Great resume you got there, congrats!

Interested in knowing your fitness routine post college career. Are you still actively training and keeping up with your fitness for tennis? Six hours a day was amazing dedication by the way. Can you speak a little about your experience at Macci's academy too?

Thanks!

Did you play for Emory?

Honestly, I'm not trying to figure out who you are. Just thought since you were a top D3 player and you're in Atlanta that maybe Emory was the school you went to since it's a top D3 program.

Matt Seeberger?
or rather Jordan Brewer?
(I suspect anyone that gives that level of detail about their accomplishments, which narrows it down to <5 people in the world of D3 tennis, doesn’t mind their identity being known.)

So what are you doing professionally now? Something tennis-related or other?

also, did you want to punch this Shoemaker chick in the face in the NCAA semis, or just ask her if she ever considered hitting through a groundstroke?

that was painful to watch, those who have lost to a screaming pusher all across the globe feel your pain

Fitness routine, nothing as intense as it used to be. Um, I get out and hit once/twice a week at the most. It's muscle memory now a days. I play ALTA AA2 mixed and ladies doubles on the weekends. Both teams have me at line 1.

Macci's tennis academy is really small and is focused on individualized training. I started with Rick at 12 years old and he changed my forehand and backhand grips and strokes. Pete Fischer developed my volleys and serve.
I guess the question I have is do you ever regret not going to a D1 school ?
No actually I do not. I went to Amherst focused on academics first and tennis second. I never planned to go pro and was looking at grad school for future career.

Nope, I played for Amherst College from 2010-2014. But we did play Emory in NCAAs.

Ding Ding Ding...you win!
I am professionally a licensed Social Worker. I work for a kidney dialysis clinic focusing on counseling and case management.

Nothing tennis related. Just kicking local 4.5 and 5.0 males' butts ;)

Probably the latter :p

Volleying IS a lost art. It literally is my favorite part of the game.

Wow I was working at DFCS here for a year and some homeless shelters and psychiatric treatment facilities right after school. Really nice to hear another tennis person aligned themselves similarly!

This thread is sick. You have a much better resume than I’ll ever have playing D3 haha.

My question is: Did you figure out what you wanted to do in college before you got there or did it take you a while to decide, and how did this affect your college tennis journey?

So why are you here? Are you trying to help recruit for the program? What is your UTR? Doubt you are beating 5.0 males.

How did you approach the team events as opposed to the individual events? Did you feel more pressure with the team or on the individual events? Which did you enjoy playing more?

Eh, I can buy she beats some 5.0 males, I’m 5.0 USTA (not self-inflationary, was forced up there despite my appeals) and I’ve lost some sets here and there to female players with similar college resumes. Entirely dependent on how they handle the serve/return game, which itself is somewhat dependent on who they train against. Have played some college girls that train a lot against guys and do just fine holding their own w returns.

Two days ago, I watched a practice match between a rising female college sophomore with a 10UTR (she is 5 feet 2) against a 11.5 UTR rising male high school senior (he is 6 ft 2). The male player beat the female player 6-0 6-0 in less than 45 minutes. The female player coudn't handle the male player's server and return of server. I guess her height didn't help the situation. The male player hit a lot of wide out kick and slice serves with some flat one down the T. Both the female's first and 2nd serve are like sitting duck to the male player. The match was over very quickly. Btw, this female player plays for Ivy league school.

Why are you a jerk? She's playing alta and is a social worker? a friend asked her to come on here. If you have questions regarding d3 tennis or high level junior tennis then this is a great resource.

as far as that 5.0 comment, shes probably beating some, she was one of the best female players in the nation, 36 in the country is nothing to scoff at. Sexism aint cool, dont perpetuate it

For what programming would she be recruiting on the behalf of? I doubt amherst wants 4.5 self rates on their team, the regularly get strongest recruiting class in the country.

11.5 male utr= top 300 wta, so yeah, thats an expected result. But how many adults and not full time tennis players are utr 10+ let alone 11 utr

Jordan is clearly a strong player, yall saw the video, I don't see her having real issue with men and she's probably a male 5.0.

she could definitely beat 5.0 guys with her creds. I am probably a low 5.0 at best now...more like strong 4.5 and recently played a d1 female recruit
and lost a close 7-5 set on clay. this girl was only a 3 star 18 year old but if she was 36 nationally shes like a 5 star. I would say top 5.0 guys would beat her if they are still younger (20s) but i bet
she would hang with them

anyway welcome. If you are interested in videoing some matches i am in atlanta also and we can get you on the tennistroll channel. We are looking for some strong women players

Very Impressive career! I only played HS. I am pretty sure with you Junior Ranking you could have played D1 easily perhaps even at UCLA or USC since you say you are from CA.

I have played against some Dlll players and they can hit the cover off the ball and are super consistent.

I decided my junior year to do social work, and I never planned on going pro.

Probably the team because it was winning for the team versus winning for myself
Thanks for posting. In hindsight, what, if anything, would you have done differently in your junior development?
I probably would’ve played up at 16 and 18s a lot earlier in my career.

USC was a dream of mine to go to but they recruit 4 years in advance. I would’ve been my father legacy since he played baseballs there in the 60s

Congratulations! Any wins are nice. I am in a ladder league round robin and any win feels good.

What is the difference between AA1 and AA2 and A1 and A2, etc? As a former college champion, I would think you would be in the highest division.

This is Jordan’s third league. The women’s AA2 league she won she says she felt it was very low competition and she won easily at line 1. Mixed doubles at AA2 there is a lot more competition. Mostly former college players but didn’t get the same training as Jordan did growing up as a junior. Going into AA1 it will be current college players and high level former college players that are a lot more like Jordan.

The final came down to a tiebreaker 12-10. So Jordan was challenged and she played some of her best tennis lately.

Sounds like there is lots of great competition in Atlanta like there is in SoCal. Congrats on your tournament win!

Jordan, bring out some friends for a hit. Can play some on red clay where tennistroll had one of his matches in the Buford/Sugarhill area.

ALTA is no joke around here.

JORDAN!!!!! Holy ****, we played Corporate League in NYC a few years ago - she's a BOSS, best in the league - killer amongst killers. I moved to Atlanta recently too, WE NEED TO CATCH UP!!!

The red clay courts is an awesome place to hit. It's not the same red clay as the crushed red brick found in Europe and South America, but still amazing.
