TENNIS CHANNEL'S FRENCH OPEN COVERAGE BEGINS SUNDAY

Tennis Channel, the only 24-hour, television-based multimedia destination dedicated to tennis and the surrounding lifestyle, will begin its inaugural coverage of Roland Garros (commonly referred to as the French Open) at 5 a.m. ET Sunday, May 27, the opening day of the event. The network will present more than 100 hours of match coverage from the two-week Grand Slam, including one men’s semifinal on Friday, June 8.

Additionally, from May 27-June 7 Tennis Channel will feature nightly prime-time show French Open Tonight, anchored by veteran tennis broadcaster Bill Macatee. The three-and-half-hour show will be televised from a different location in the streets of Paris each night of the tournament and will offer the day’s best tennis, previously unseen matches, original features and coverage from in and around the city.

Tennis Channel’s comprehensive tournament schedule runs from Sunday, May 27-Friday, June 8, and generally begins at 5 a.m. ET (see full schedule below). The network’s daily match telecasts typically conclude at noon ET, at which point ESPN2’s afternoon coverage begins. Tennis Channel is producing all French Open coverage for both networks, with each channel utilizing its own commentators.

On-Air Talent

Tennis Channel’s French Open on-air team includes tennis legends John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova, who join the network as lead on-air analysts during the world’s premier clay-court tournament. Lead on-air commentators Ted Robinson and Ian Eagle are on board with Tennis Channel veterans Leif Shiras, Barry MacKay and Katrina Adams. Former and current players Thomas Blake, Chanda Rubin and Justin Gimelstob will also assist as on-air analysts.

Many – if not all – of these personalities will join Macatee on French Open Tonight throughout the tournament, as will “Entertainment Tonight” and Oxygen network veteran Roshumba Williams, who will be a nightly commentator for the show.

Beyond its network television coverage of the French Open, Tennis Channel plans to carry up to four live matches per day on its Web site, www.TennisChannel.com. These will be complemented with additional on-demand video clips, including daily highlights, archived matches and original content.

alright so according to this schedule, ESPN2 is showing not only tennis, but live tennis. how is this any different than last year, other than the fact that TTC now has live coverage? people made it seem like unless you had TTC you were screwed, when in fact, its exactly the same, but better. Am I right?

I don't see how ESPN2 could be showing much live tennis as their broadcast window doesn't come on the air until 6:00pm Paris time. Most matches will be over by then and they don't play under the lights at Roland Garros. So we might get to see the end of each day's last scheduled match live on ESPN2. Otherwise, it'll probably be mostly taped matches played earlier in the day.

Oh Wow, TSN.ca still has the Australian Open final on the website available to view! The entire match is right there but I think it won't be there much longer as matches from the French will replace it. Get it while you can.

My internship doesn't start for a few more weeks, so I can stay up all night and watch every match live. I don't get TTC though, so this is very frustrating. I do get it at my apartment at school though, so I may have to head up for a few days to get my fix. What a pain...

I was hoping Fox Sports would cover some of it, but nothing yet. I'll keep an eye out.

NBC is showing a tape of Sharapova when Djokovic and Patience are battling in the 5th! No Bleeping Commonsense. Is that what NBC stands for?

I guess you can't even change the channel when you're watching tape-delayed tennis. Watching Fed vs. Robredo I changed to ESPN during the commercial and they were showing the results. You'd think they'd be more mindful of what they are showing on their other channel, but I guess this is what I get for not "writing my cable provider" to get the tennis channel.

I see NBC is scheduled to show men's semi's for three hours on Friday. Does this mean they are only showing ONE of the matches? If so, which one?

It depends on whats the schedule on that day.

Where are you getting this info, O wise one? How do you know NBC is showing the SECOND semi?

TTC shows the other semi at some point on Friday? is that the idea?

I find this damn odd, and annoying. I have NBC and ESPN2, and have pretty much been able to see most of the important matches I wanted to see, and plenty of ones I didn't... Now suddenly I can't watch one of the two men's semi's??

The semifinal match is scheduled to start at 7AM, but as it stated there NBC will only start their coverage at 10AM, so obviously they CAN only show the 2nd match, isn't it?

And to make things worse, TTC is not scheduled to cover the 1st men's semifinal match, so that means that the 1st semi will probably not available for anyone in US.

I found this in somewhere.
Following is the schedule for NBC's coverage of the 2007 French Open, which culminates with live coverage of the women's (June 9) and men's (June 10) finals next weekend:

Saturday, June 2, 1-4 p.m. ET – Third Round
Sunday, June 3, 1-4 p.m. ET – Third and Fourth Round
Friday, June 8, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (all time zones) – Men's Semifinals
Saturday, June 9, 9 a.m.-Noon ET – Women's Final
Sunday, June 10, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. ET – Men's Final

I think this means that some areas in US get to watch the first semi as well but some areas unfortunately cant.

I'm sure NBC has the technology to show the first match if they want. But anyway, I don't think this is the final word on this...

Anyone else know?

ESPN 2, 2007 French Open - Maria Sharapova vs. Ana Ivanovic HD at 8 am EDT from the website.
ESPN 2 claims it will show the other semi according to the current TV show. Too bad TTC cannot show dub semis or JohnnyMac 45 and over dubs

Does anybody know if ESP2 will play the men's semi-final live on Friday? According to their website, all men's semi-final will be taped.

Thank you

I'm on the West Coast, and it looks like we'll be unable to see any of the men's semifinal matches live. This sucks. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I hope the ESPN online feed will show it...

There is about a 1% chance of getting either of the matches live. Let's just look back at the men's semifinals coverage for the last three years. Three years ago, Nalbandian and Gaudia were shown taped delayed on NBC at 10 am. Henman and Coria were shown taped delayed later in the day on espn. No problem right? Well espn ran past their allotted time for their TAPE DELAYED coverage and had to switch channels during the middle of the 4th set.

Then there was the coverage two years ago. This faux pas was an all-time classic. The first semifinal, Puerta v. Davydenko is delayed by rain. NBC goes on the air at 10 am and tells us that they will show us the Nadal-Federer semifinal live. They said they are waiting for the first semifinal to finish first. They tell us that the first semifinal can be seen later on in the day on espn2. Then Ted Robinson goes, "Right now, Davydenko is leading Puerta two sets to none." What??? Then NBC proceeds to show taped coverage of previous matches while Puerta comes back and wins the match in 5 sets. Oh yeah, NBC alerts us to the fact that Puerta comes back, but they don't show us any of the coverage. Needless to say, anyone who wanted to watch that match needn't bother. Thankfully, the Federer-Nadal match is then shown in its entirety.

Then last year they screwed up again, but not as bad. Federer played Nalbandian in the first semifinal. That match was over by the time NBC came on the air, and Nadal-ljubicic was going on live. NBC decides to show us the Federer match taped delayed. The Nadal match wasn't aired until 6:30 pm on espn2.

So anyway, I'm not expecting anything different tomorrow. I will be waking up early and trying to find online streams to the matches. Luckily Davydenko is in the first semi, so I know there are some Russian television feeds available online.

Based on the "guide info" on my satellite receiver it says that TTC is showing "Women's seminfinals" this (Friday morning) at 5am CST/6am EST. ESPN2 has no coverage scheduled for Friday. NBC has a 3 hour timeslot 10am CST/11am EST, which will be one of the men's semifinals, but which one? At 3pm CST/4pm EST TTC is has 7 hours scheduled for "men's semifinals", which I'm assuming they will use to show both men's semi's on tape delay.

It's a pretty crazy world we live in when, with all our advances and conveniences and technology, we still don't even know exactly what the hell NBC will be showing us 8 hours from now...
