"Comparing the play of these two eminent masters of the craft I think that of [Player 1] might be defined as the play of a man who has a natural genius for the game, that of [Player 2] as the result of persistent practice. [Player 1's] style is as graceful as the performance is masterly his hardest strokes are made without apparent effort and he has a really wonderful aptitude for meeting new and sudden difficulties with equally novel and unexpected displays of dexterity. [Player 2] on the other hand cannot be said to have a style at all and it is sheer industry and perseverance which have enabled him to reach his present high standard of excellence."

Name the two.

Player 1 is McEnroe. Player 2 is Lendl.

That's the Roger Federer fan blog, if I'm not mistaken. Some of the most cringe-inducing reading on the internet.

I got acid reflux from reading that.

Really? I got a comfortable and warm soothing feeling that travelled throughout my body, from the tips of my fingers as I touched for the sky, all the way to my toes wriggling in my black snd white stripped chucks.

Player 1 can only be the excellence that is Roger, a true hero to all tennis fans, and player 2 has to be Rafa, Rogers curse for being to dominant...

Lovely post OP! 5 stars indeed!

I don't see it being any other players than those 2.

Navratilova and Evert???

If you edit out the male references.

Otherwise, Sampras/Agassi is my guess.

McEnroe and Lendl?

(Federer and Nadal would be too obvious, hopefully)

A couple more before I reveal:

"But without wishing to speak as a laudator temporis acii, I incline to the belief that as a spectacle these encounters [form] the high water mark of...tennis. Certainly no such interest has been aroused since then by any two players, one of the chief reasons of the attraction which they exercised being probably the individuality and contrast of their style--that of [Player 1] all life and elegance and marked by great rapidity of execution--that of [Player 2] somewhat laboured and ungainly but of wonderful effectiveness and power.

[Player 2] is simply a terror to second class players much more so indeed than [Player 1] himself. It [requires] a very considerable amount of nerve to stand up against this grim determined player with his sardonic smile who neither [asks] for nor [gives] quarter, whose arm never [seems] to tire and whose attack [is] crushing to a degree."

"[Player 2's] style is in direct contrast to that of [Player 1's], for it is labored and purely the result of study.

[Player 2] puts both feet firmly on the ground and fixes himself completely. He takes the ball at the top of its bound striking it with all his force. His racket is vertical and is lifted as he strikes giving a strong over twist to the ball. The back foot too is lifted as the stroke is made and the whole weight of the body is thrown on to the ball."

Still sticking with McEnroe (Player 1) and Lendl (Player 2). If I'm right do I get a prize since I guessed that first?

I don't know who this IS, but I know it ain't El Rog. Not if this person has a clue what they're talking about anyway. I'd say it could maybe apply quite well to Graf and Seles, but they're obviously dudes.

Sounds so old-world tennis it's probably Big Bill (Tilden) vs Little Bill (Johnston).

The way the writer expresses himself should indicate it's from a bygone era. I'll be surprised if the answer refers to any present day player, :)

It could be a lot of players mentioned in here. I haven't been following tennis long enough to know the old greats fully

Both are references to Federer:
1. Prime Fed
2. Old Fed
;-)

No? Here's my second try:
1. LeeD
2. Sureshs
;-) ;-)
