Has Federer been top 2 in the world for the last time in his career?

Do you think Sunday was the last day that Federer will be ranked in the top 2 in the world?

With that, his absolutely insane record of 16 consecutive years of being ranked in the top 2 at some point during the year comes to an end in 2018.

No. I never count Federer out.

Agreed. I think Fed might snatch a few weeks at top2 in 2019. His chance will increase massively if he defends at AO19 (it'll be hard, but not that far fetched bc Fed's the only one who won with AO's new surface ;) ).

Federer is not winning anymore AOs with healthy and fully motivated Novak back in bussiness! Novak is the real king of Australian major, not that old imposter!

You 'may' be right that Novak might win AO19 to claim AO-GOAT, but it hasn't happened yet. It's not even certain that he'll make the finals (since he hasn't yet made a finals with the new surface), regardless of which round Fed gets to.

It's good to be confident.
Overconfidence? Not so much. ;)

Most likely. The only way he gets back in the top 2 is if Djokovic or Nadal get injured and he grabs it for a brief time before another player grabs the spot.

In Shanghai Fed had his "Rome moment". You could clearly see Djokovic regaining his best form against Nadal in Rome, although he lost it. Watch Fed' match against Nishikori - he has too much game left than being top two.

How about Nadal not being injured, but not defending his 50,000 clay court points, and Federer doing well at AO, IW and Wimbledon? I'm not banking on Fed ever being in the No. 2 again, but it's possible if the points after No.1 are spread out over several players.

As expected this thread is filled with 0lderer BS from Fed fans. They declared him "done and dusted" in 2013 itself and again in 2016. That didn't Stop him from winning 3 Slams, 6 Masters, making countless Slam semis/quarters and holding #1 position 3 times since they declared him Finnish. Wait for Federer giving just one big performance, they will declare him second favorite for AO in no time, till that they will pretend sky is falling. This is happening for last five years now.

The problem for Federer at the moment is that he is underplaying. He is wisely trying to avoid injuries, but the problem comes with that is not playing enough and then your game not clicking into high gear because you haven't had enough matches for it to be 'automatic'.

I am not sure if he will make number 2 or 1 again, but think about it - he has been in the top 2 for more than 520 weeks. That is 10 years! The top 2 for 10 years - amazing.

If Nadal and Novak are healthy then I tend to think so. But nothing’s sure. (Duh)

My concern with Federer after Shanghai is that he appeared to be playing well, timing the ball sweetly but only won the 3 matches he won quite narrowly before losing the semi. I think his level of play has dipped so most of his matches from here on will be tough. IMO he's still competitive but on the slide.

I think the streak was broken in 2016 already

In 2013 Fed was 32 and in 2015 he was 34.

He’s currently 37, so declaring him “done and dusted” now is hardly BS. It’s actually called “logic.”

Djokovic and Nadal will retire within 5 years. Then Federer will go back to #1

He won Slam at age of 36 years and 6 months. Nothing logical to declare him Finnish just 6 months after that (especially when he is making Masters semis and finals).

Anyway not expecting anything better from you. You are exactly the kind of Fed fan I described earlier. You will shout "Finnish, Finnish" from top of the roof till he delivers next big performance. After that "permanent" decline will suddenly vanish.

I believe more on my eyes than anything else. He is far from Finnish (although should have been finished given his age).

Zverev will be the first player to become ranked 2nd for the first time in over a decade. He will be the newest number one since Murray.

We'll see what happens in 2019. Remember now, on the off chance that he decides to play the clay, he's defending zero points after IW through the start of the grass court season.

@BeatlesFan is a great Federer fan and one of my favs but she's a bit of a doubting Thomas. Sometimes I wonder if the lady declares the Fedr dead and buried so as to not get disappointed.

What say you Beatles Fan?

The likelihood is yes.

However, how many men have ever been top 2 in the world aged 37? Rosewall or Tilden, maybe. I can’t think of anyone else.

I am convinced Roger will never win another slam. He’s 37 and I base my doubts on his age but also his diminishing motivation. I have minimal expectations for the remainder of his career.

It’s been a hell of a ride but I honestly believe that Rog is done. I don’t know anything about anything so I could most certainly be wrong but it doesn’t feel like it.

I don't see it happening yet. He's got to many places that he can hold the number 2 position. And that's a hell of an achievement. Seems like I learn of a new accomplishment every time I read a post on him

Wow! I had no idea about this accomplishment of Fed's. That is absolutely insane. 16 straight years of hitting #2 in the world is absurd.

Who's the closest to matching that? I was just digging around in TA.

Here are some player's longest streaks of hitting #2 in the world at some point in a calendar year. I could be missing some here. These are the 14+ slam winners in the Open Era. I think Lendl was at 7 straight.

Federer 16(2003-2018)
Djoker 10(2010-2019) Djoker has virtually locked
Nadal 10(2005-2014)
Sampras 9(1992-2000)

Connors might have had 12. I'm not sure if Connors hit #2 in 1981. If he did, then he had 12 straight from 1974-1985. Laver and Rosewall played before the rankings era. But I'm sure some gurus here could come up with a way to quantify their rankings.
