Hate saying this, but Fed should retire

This article is absolutely right. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/why-roger-federer-must-retire-to-maintain-his-legacy-8802461.html

A player like Roger should leave the game when he is on top. He should make us all wonder, how many more magic tricks could he have pulled off that we weren't lucky enough to see. It would be better for his legacy. Alas, the perfect moment has passed - he had won Wimbledon last year and was world #1. Had he retired, his storyline would be unrivaled in the pantheon of tennis heroes. 17 Slams. Retired at #1.

Roger, you see, is not Connors, whose legacy was his scrappiness and refusal to go away. Or Agassi whose high level of play despite excruciating back pain became part of his legend. Roger, instead, will always be known for his artistry, his grace, his brilliance. And seeing him fade is nothing short of tragedy.

If he can get on top of his back issues, no reason he can't win more hardware. Remember, he was #1 this time last year.

I've noticed that Ralph and Fed are alternating in success, I think 2014 will be Fed's year, Ralph will slump in 14, his seemingly neverending luck is gonna run out.

Besides getting old but it's hard to focus, keep in shape and fit when he has a family.

I wish he could have waited after tennis and then settle down.

Wawrinka knew it was a distraction so he ditch his family to focus on his career.

Federer likely experimenting now with the new bigger racquet. He needs to get some good wallop on his shots which he's been lacking lately.

This time next year Nadal will probably have 16 slams. At least Sampras could enjoy his record for half a decade, if Fed retires he could lose it in 18 months. If he cares about his legacy he absolutely has to win another slam.

I know. I never wanted Wawrinka to leave his wife and new born kid. However, I still believe his much older girlfriend got pregnant for being careless. The wedding took place because of they were going to have a baby, not because they have arrange the wedding long before. I don't think Stan want to get marry.

Isn't that why Federer got married?

Not that any of it matters or is our business.

That's because Fed starts succeeding when Raf is injured.

Roger and Mirka got married on their own terms(unlike Wawrinka).

However I wish that they have waited after his career is over because it's a distraction.

I think Fed will be inspired to work harder than ever. Like Nadal last year, he hates it when people write him off.

I think he could make a run again at Wimbledon 2014. I can't see him winning anywhere else unfortunately.

Dude, Mirka was pregnant before they got married. So they got married after they found out she was knocked up. How do you know what the terms were, or if they were better than Stan's? And why is it any of our business? Just stop talking about it. None of us know anything other than timelines.

Actually Nads couldn't succeed in slams off of clay until Fed got mono and aged past his prime.

Wasn't Nadal like 22 or 23 when he won Wimbledon? How old was Federer when he won his very first MAJOR at Wimbledon, 22? Plus Federer was 26 or so at Wimbledon 2008? He was at the very top of his game, the mono thing is most likely a completely BS excuse.

You can't have mono and play tennis. See: Ancic.

Roger and Stan are not in the same situation. Roger want to get marry, but Stan was force to get marry. If Stan was completely happy about getting marry, he wouldn't leave his wife in the future.

It must be very troubling to walk around all day every day with that much hatred and bitterness for someone you don't even know.

It's funny you should say that, because last week during a match that Nick Lester was commentating, he and his partner were talking about Soderling. She was a female and I don't know who she was, but she was rather mouthy, talking through the points and kind of unprofessional.

Anyway, she brought up Soderling's name and how he hadn't been back since the mono. She then stated that she didn't know when he might be back, because you can't play on the tour if you have mono, and before she could go on Nick must have stopped her, because she never finished what she was going to say, but changed the subject mid sentence.

Then, before Mannarino played Federer he said in the pre-match interview that he had just gotten back on tour after suffering from mono.

So, it appears that if you have mono you can't play on the tour anyway.

I wish I remembered which match it was, because I was watching the USO Mix and switching between channels. I really wanted to know who this woman was because I wasn't familiar with her at all. I think it was a Verdasco match.

Roger only married Mirka after she got pregnant.

I agree. Mono is just an explanation why his level dropped so much. But it shouldn't be used as an excuse. Everybody has health issues.

One reason would be Rafa. Other than that Nole. And Muzza.
Still he can win one more slam with good luck and fortune in heaps on his side.

It is troubling...but what is more disturbing--truly disturbing is what we see in this thread: the notion that a player should have put off something as personally life-changing/joyous as marraige/children for the "sake" of their career.

Translated, someone is such a rabid fanatic of one player, that this someone's #1 concern is the player dedicating his time to winning more titles, than his own personal joy--all to make this fanatic able to crown an undeserving head.

That is how psychologically fractured some fans are.

...I expect the guilty to attack this post in one way or another.

True. But if he loves playing, why should he retire just because he is losing?

He should not retire---yet. I've said time and again, that he should spare his body and focus on Wimbledon 2014, and if he wins it--retire, as his current physical troubles may not be easy to micromanage down the road. Winning at his best major, then going out that way is better than playing on and on, facing one early round exit after another on unforgiving surfaces.

You do have a point. Fed is always playing too much. And he gets gassed out at the latter stages of majors. Who cares if you are consistent if you can't win.

He should do like Nadal or Serena. Skipping some majors but his peak play would increase.

Maybe Fed could pull it off when he was 27, but not now. His consistency record like 23 consecutive semis sounds nice on paper, but it doesn't help him in goat discussions.

Another roger should retire thread, how creative. I don't think Roger will/should retire. Cut the guy some slack, yes 2013 was a lackluster year for him, but guess what, like everyone else, he's getting older and he's human. Roger still loves the game and he's still got the game to slug it out with the best of them, so I don't see the need to retire. He'll probably regain some confidence back this fall in the indoor season as he usually does well there and that will set the tone for 2014. I'm pretty sure he's working hard on his conditioning and game now.

Guess it's in those tougher times that you actually see who's a real Roger fan and who's not. It's quite sad to see how people are so quick to jump on this bashing parade when just last year, those same people were amazed by his 17th slam, record as #1 etc...I sincerely hope and think that will Roger will make a strong comeback in 2014 just to prove everyone wrong.
