Heat/Humidity

Hi,
I'm really struggling playing in the heat and humidity (literally running out of breath after a couple of games). I haven't play in this weather for a long time. What kind of training would you suggest to build up stamina?

Thanks.

Tell me about it. It's 93+ out here today and humid as all getout. I sweat on my way from the office to the car.

Stamina is one thing. I've got stamina all day long. I can ride a bike from sunup till sundown. But take me deep into points for a couple of games, and I'm hurtin bad.

I'm guessing that this is your problem as well..recovering between long points or games.

For this you need anaerobic training. High energy efforts for a short period, followed by a short recovery, then repeating it again. Cyclists call these 'intervals'. They will pedal at 100% for 1 minute, pushing their heart rate up to the max, and then recover for 3 minutes.

Plain jogging can't help your body recover quickly after hard efforts. But using this 'intervals' idea you can apply it to almost any sort of excersize. 1 minute of 100% effort, 3 minutes of moderate effort.

Cycling and running, running and cycling! Get a 'trainin! I'm not a fitness monster but I love playing in this weather--so easy on the joints compared to chilly weather. Work up a nice lather, makes ya feel like you're doin something.

I really do find that cycling is a great stamina booster... especially hills...do some steady riding then go for a hill, then some steady... like dmvprof suggested as intervals if you're in flat land. Try to ride for at least 90 minutes, IMO... My rule is to ride at least as far as your usual match, so if you wanna last at least 2 hours, ride for 2 hours. Because cycling's a lot harder than tennis IMO.

do Fartlek training..there are many permutations of it and it is great for tennis players as a form of interval training. if you google it i am sure lots of info will pop up

I like it too, once I get used to it. Those first hot spells with humidity can literally be killers though. Adapt slowly, I think. It'll come.

The 1st day that is hot and humid here in St.Louis is a little tough, but after that like Craig I love it! I think the key at least for me is to start my running in the fall and winter I run between 5 and 8 miles 8 minute miles everyothr day and use the abb wheel 150 reps. everyother day as well when Spring hits I'm there except the 1st day is a little wobbly. Good Luck !
