Help me find a new car

My condolences. Overpriced, finnicky, gussied-up VW's IMHO. Hope you have better luck than I did. I'll never get another one. Ever.

Well, I'm meeting with the finance guy of BMW Financial as he said he could make me a great deal on a 7 series, so we'll see. But I didn't like the Infinity, and the 5 series didn't fit for me. Don't want a Lexus or Acura.

I would buy the 7 series if I was five years older without question.

If I was in the market for a new car of your type right now Eph I would buy an RS6 saloon (my colleague just bought one, nice drive):
http://www.audi.co.uk/audi/uk/en2/new_cars/audi_a6/rs_6_saloon.html

Apparently this is different from the S that you have test driven from what I gather.

It's not indiscreet but has a fantastic drive. The suspension is a little stiff for my tastes however but given your experience with the E you will probably like it.

Otherwise I am a big fan of the 5 series BMW in general. The M5 is an excellent car and I am particularly fond of the "M" switch which allows you to turn it on/off as you wish and transform the ride/handling from civilised to sport. If you don't want an M I have found the 530i to be great and sufficient. I am not however a fan of the little computer in it, the switch is fiddly and it's not very well laid out in the menus.

Given that you live in NY though and hence are susceptible to snow etc...I would go for the RS6/S6 given the quattro option.

Cheers, Orig

Its his money to spend why do you care how he spends it? When its your money spend it how you want but to look down on someone else for wanting a nice car is not right.

Damn Maverick you get so snappy man. Why do you look to start conflicts ? I never said he couldn't spend it however he wanted. Never said getting a nice car was a bad thing. Its his money and his decision.

I was just observing his comments and trying to help but they aren't really consistant.

OP have you thought about the volvo S60R?? I drove one. Not the fastest car but it looks nice, handles alright, has some kick, very comfortable, spacious, and reliable. You can also switch modes to change the suspension which is handy.

i think hes been very consistent that he wants a higher end car. he doesnt want a hybrid or a family wagon. he wants a higher end car. why judge him on that?

Wow, I thought they were 100+ that's why I didn't bother at the dealership. The only price I could find online was 70k pounds, so I'm guessing it's double that in the USA. And nobody seems to have it for sale used (autotrader or cars.com).

The search continues!

Better looking that the M5 I think and the quattro would be nice.

Decisions, decisions.

The 7 series isn't 4WD. :(

Deciding between the A6, Porsche 911 (used) and BMW X5 (used), 7 series, or keep my MB S500 until next year.

Leaning towards the 7 series as the dealer made me an unbelievable offer. But no AWD.

Is this going to be a daily driver? Do you live in the city?

Yes, unless I go with the Porsche 911 & BMW option.

My family has a home in Manhattan but I reside upstate.

The 911 could handle ice/snow (in 4wd and with snow tires) but probably would be high centered upstate if your street is not plowed.

There's no way I'd bring out a Porsche past October where I live.

I'm leaning towards that option, actually, as I'll save a bit of money and I can have two cars rather than one.

Why? Hail would be worry and you're pretty far from Oklahoma...

VW Golf R32. THE END..
I know you've been looking at SALOONS, but you'd be surprised how much space this thing has in the back. Plus its 4WD..
Or just keep the S Class... You know there's nothing better than a S Class.. Who cares if you're not "old enough" for it?
People are so fickle...

Is Volkswagen off your list? Their new CC is a pretty nice car, based on an updated Passat chassis, but a lot classier. It's not a sports car, but it does have 4 doors, and loaded, you can still get it for around $40G.

As for the BMW 6 series. I just read the report on it. Obviously it's nice, but it hasn't been updated yet, so the 5 series has a more up-to-date chassis etc. Teh 7-series are nice, but their resale value is one of the worst in the business. If you buy used, you should be able to pick one up for less than a similarly equipped 5 series. People that are in the market for a Beemer 7 usually don't buy used. Hence, the poor resale value. Someone suggested a Cadillac CTS-V. It's a true 4-door Vette beater. If you like the edgy styling, you should really give it a look. It's not a landyacht like earlier Cads. I know you probably don't shop Hyundai, but if you want the most for your money, and want about every bell and whistle, you should look at their new 8-cylinder Genesis. With their long warranty, you shouldn't have to worry about it for a while either. It's around $40G too.

Good luck.

The dealer has a 7 that's been sitting on the lot for far too long which he wants to move. My family has purchased there before and they like working with us, so he offered it to me just as you said, more or less (it's one year old).

I was under the impression that Audi and VW were more or less the same company, no?

Damn, I don't like the 7 series at all, and seems like a pain in the butt for Manhattan. Then again, I really don't like my friend's but his is silver. I'm sure it's better in other colors but that rear end is weaksauce.
