Ball machine + watching lots of free tennis instruction videos on the Internet + posting for free help in the Tips forum of this board
That's what she saidI'll take flesh over a machine any day of the week.
The perfect recipe for becoming a 3.5 for life. (not that there's anything wrong with that).

I prefer a ball machine which comes with a pro who can carry the machine, set it up, operate the remote, and pick up the balls.
I think I just invented a new job category! The Tennis Caddy. It will generate millions of new jobs!
The ball machine becomes nearly useless over time. It’s great at first as you’re learning the basic strokes and learning specific shots like dropshots. But once you have the mechanics correct the ball machine becomes a detriment. You NEED the variety and footwork that you can only get from a hitting partner.
well, buy one and come back and tell me I’m wrong. Even randomized, they’re just swiveling and generally hitting with the same Depth, height, spin and pace. Nothing beats a hitting partner. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great when you’re fixing basic mechanics but if your basic mechanics are sound they aren’t helping you get better.I'd likely benefit a lot from a ball machine.
^^^^ seconded. They’re useful for a brief period starting out provided you have a coach observing and providing feedback. After that, it’s all hitting partner. Not one high level player (D1 and above) uses a ball machine. They all use live balls.
Rec players just reinforce bad strokes with a ball machine.
