How much do you slice?

Approximately what percentage of shots do you slice? How much do you think you should slice? When do you slice? I do it on about 30% of backhands and maybe 5% of forehands. Situations when I slice are:

1. Defence. When really stretched.
2. Low balls.
3. Trying to change up the pace. I do this more off the BH.
4. Return of serve. I do this too much. My returns should be more aggressive.
5. When I'm lazy. Sometimes I just randomly slice BHs in the middle of a rally without much purpose. You can see me do it a couple of times in the epic points thread. I have really tried to eliminate this from my game but it still lingers and creeps up especially when I'm tired.

Please discuss. Tips on how to correct #5 are also appreciated.

Slice 95% of my backhand returns back and probably around 30% of my backhand groundstrokes. The amount I slice in rallies really depends on the opponent though... I have a butt ugly slice but it goes in somehow and can mess with some ball-bashers

Haha, I pretty much slice for exactly the reasons you mentioned.

1. Yep.
2. Low sliced balls....I usually slice a slice.....but a low flat ball, depends on my mood and my prep....I'm usually ok with my 2HBH with low balls.
3. Yep...pretty much the same thing...mostly BH, although I do try to incorporate a FH slice although my disguise isn't great.
4. I tend to slice more BH returns in doubles, as it's clears the net lower than my 2HBH return...so even if it's slower than my slow 2 hander, it's still the harder of the two to poach.

I also tend to slice more when I have fresh strings. The backspin and sidespin I get on a fresh pair of RPM's is nasty and my regular opponent has trouble with it. After a couple of hours playing, while the strings still are fine, the bite on the slice isn't there.

Also with fresh strings, I have a slice that looks like a slice, but winds up becoming a drop shot, as in it looks like it's going deep, but lands well short of the service line and then just dies. Have no idea how I do it, but catches everyone including me off guard. :)

Nowadays there are sensors or rackets that can track that pretty well and give you a percentage so you are not just guessing.

My answer is that I slice enough. :)

Probably on 30% of shots to my backhand wing. And like 90% of serve returns, lol. I have a pretty solid two hander but it's not a real weapon and goes into opponent's strike zones too much for my liking. I often find that a low skidding slice gives opponents more trouble.

I use my backhand slice as a bail out shot when I don't think I can get there with my one hander, and occasionally I hit it when lazy. Sadly I don't approach with it that often because I like my OHBH as an attacking shot if I have time.

I been playing this guy with a tough lefty slice serve in doubles. I been told to lob over the net person to deal with this shot. I wonder if I should use slice for this. I been trying a topspin lob but its not been working quite right.

I slice all the time, I like moving the ball around and making my opponents react to different shots. It throws off their rhythm, and keeps them uneasy, and makes them make errors.

I love slicing, I don't know why more people don't do it. Backhand slice up the line (I'm left handed), topspin forehand up the line from their crosscourt response, short crosscourt backhand slice, heavy topspin backhand crosscourt, chip and charge, point over.

One of my favorites, and seems to screw with people a lot more than it should. I use the forehand slice a lot too, as people seem to have no idea what to do with that.

Forehand slice isn't cool 'round these parts.

somebody here cough cough (name starts with an L) after watching my hitting session vid said I shouldn't slice and that I should learn how to hit a regular backhand groundstroke instead.
jokes aside I start slicing only during important points.

I use my slice on around half of my backhands. More in some matches less in others. There are 5 types/reasons for slicing:
  • The opponent has hit very hard and you only have time to bunt back a half volley.
  • When you are drawn very wide a loopy undespin slice which lands deep cross court will buy a lot of time and gives the opponent no pace to blast a winner.
  • The short slice which travels low over the net forces the opponent forward and draws errors/sitters.
  • The drive slice cuts very low and pins the opponent back while forcing them to cough up a loopy shot. It is useful for net approaches.
  • The junk slice has a load of spin, and more sidespin than the others. It is an attempt a to draw an error or sitter.

Not sure about #5 but I hit the slice when I don't have time to swing out on my bh. OR if I see it bothers a player. I use the bh slice on approach shots as well, ala the 80's. I never use the fh slice. On groundies I would guess 30% as well but really have not clue. On ROS depends on how fast the guy serves but I would guess 30% as well here.

Would be interesting to see the real %s

I slice a lot lately now that I think of it haha

I learned to play a low biting slice (both long and short) consistently and most people cannot cope with it, so it has become a shot I use aggressively as of late (as well as defensively playing a normal slice). How much I slice depends on my opponent, but the slice return is one of my favorite shots.

I slice about 90% of my backhands. Only time I hit a topspin backhand is when attacking a short ball or sometimes when hitting a dipping passing shot. I run around my backhand a lot.

Put me down as probably not as much as I should... block slice bh return of serves that take me wide.... defensive slice when I'm stretched out... otherwise, not as much as I should.

Occasionally vs a heavy slicer I'll get into a slicing exchange, just for funny to see who can crank the heaviest slice til someone overhits it and frames it or shanks it.

I would estimate I slice about 20% of the time. I slice when:

1. approach shots on really low balls
2. approach shots on my backhand side but not all the time
3. returning a way better than average serve on FH and BH returns
4. defensive lobs
5. when pulled really wide - use a squash shot type slice on FH and BH
6. on really high balls to my BH but not all high balls
7. drop shots
8. occasionally in baseline rallies for variety - hit deep slice for change of pace or short slice to make opponent hit up

But, all in all, only about 20% of time. I run around BH a fair amount and hit probably 95% of FH either topspin or top/flat. I hit majority of BHs with top or top/flat too but slice a little more on this side.

I'm with you on this one, with the following excuses: I like to perfect my top spin 1HBH and I try to play first strike tennis and dictate play.

Gambling is illegal at Bushwood sir, and I never slice.

Just kidding, I slice all the time. Nothing like mixing up a backhand cross-court exchange with a nice low slicer. I slice a lot returning serve as I tend to have a chip/block return style. I also slice through high, looping shots to my backhand as I find with some tip weight in a racquet I can really drive through a high ball and it stays nice and low with plenty of pace on it.

About 3% on forehands, on desperate wide retrieves only.
About 90 % on the backhand side, or until the opponent starts to groove into my slices, and then I switch to a flattish topspin 1hbh for a few shots, then back to slice once he adapts to that.
