If Fed could choose three matches to replay...

What three matches would Fed choose to replay today if he could?

What tactics could he employ tochange the results?

There’s a lot of matches he would like to have back.

2009 Australian Open Final
2009 US Open Final
2019 Wimbledon Final

He should have won all 3 of those matches.
And countless non-slams where he held MP's, the two worst being- - -

2006 Rome final against Rafa
2018 IW final against Del Po

And a slam:

2005 AO semi against Safin (the de facto final)

If he plays the Wimbledon 2019 final, there's a big chance he doesn't make it that close again. USO 2011 would be far better for him to replay, in any case. Not 2010 because he had a better chance of beating Nadal in the final in 2011 for sure.

I think a match he had in the bag and lost that would have been great for him was Tsonga in Wimbledon 2011. He probably would have won the event had he won that match. Which would have meant a slam beating Djokodal, two consecutive slam wins over Djokovic which would have probably affected his confidence after the unbeaten streak, and breaking the Nadal "curse".

Roma 2006 would have been huge for his confidence going into RG, and getting a Bo5 win over Nadal could have turned the tables drastically.

Not only does Djokovic get 2 less slams (No 2011 US Open and No 2019 Wimbledon) which would be a big bonus...

But we would also finally get Fedal US Open finals with most likely a 1-1 split...

A win-win situation for all true tennis fans :giggle:

USO SF 2011: bomb down the T.

Wimbledon 2019 F: serve-and-volley on match point instead. He already hit a good serve and Djokovic hit back a rather weak float FH slice return that could have been volleyed away.

Wimbledon 2018 QF: play Edberg tennis and suppress Anderson quickly.

US Open 2009: let us bully Delpo backhand.

He should replay all these, these were all matches lost when they were on his racquet and cost him the championship.

2008 Wimbledon FInal
2009 AO final
2009 USO final
2011 Wimbledon match vs Tsonga

Federer wouldn't win W 08 even if you give him another chance. It should have ended in four sets. Federer somehow pushed it to decider - it was miracle itself. He would stand better chance to to win AO 09 final on another day. Only if his serve worked - he would take it in four.

Yeah, it would've been a travesty had he won the W 08 final, especially after the way he lost the second set. When you expected him to push really hard after being a set down, after getting that break he lost like 5 games in a row. That is unacceptable and Nadal was clearly a better player in that match.

2005 AO SF - 85% beating Hewitt in F
2004 FO R4 - Beats Guga and goes onto win whole thing
2005 FO SF - Nadal loses all confidence in tennis and considers going to work on fishing trawlers

Federer would probably choose three out of these five Slam finals he lost - 2008 Wimbledon final, 2009 AO final, 2009 USO final, 2014 W final and 2019 W final. I think Djokovic was too good in the 2015 W and USO finals while Nadal was too good in the FO finals that Federer lost for him to choose to replay any of those Slam final matches.

Fed himself said that 2009 USO F is a match he'd like to have back.

But that was before the Wimby final in 2019.

My list:

1. Head and shoulders above the rest: Wimbledon final 2019. Would and should have cemented his status as the GOAT.
2. USO 2009 final simply because it's a Slam final. Really should have won it even though it was peak Delpo on the other side of the net.
3. Rome 2006. Mostly because it could potentially be a different universe on future Fedal clay meetings. Would 2008 RG final have happened the way it did? And if it didn't, maybe Fed would have come out on top in the Wimby final the same year. Many ifs of course...

Had Roger better protected his Wimbledon reign earlier in the decade, his slam record still would've been protected even when he began suffering from slamidous later in the decade.

Djokovic being too good in the US 2015 final can be debated. Djokovic was clearly worse than in the WI 2015 final in the same year.

Imho he'd like to replay 2006 rome final, 2008 Wimbledon final and 2009 uso final.

(Yes, I'm counting the butterfly effects too)
7 Wimbledon and 6 USO in a row with those, maybe even RG 06 with increased confidence winning rome (probably loses in 5 at RG though I think)

How do you see 2010/2011 finals going?

Hypothetically if 2010 Federer was at his 2012 level could he beat Nadal?

Same for 2011 beating Djokoivc/Nadal back to back.

RG 2006 final- I read that was probably his best performance but he got tentative quickly.
AO 2009 final- Wasn't he playing the better tennis and then just fell off? If Nadal didn't have an AO and the career slam, Federer would be a clearer GOAT. If he even cares.
Wimbledon 2019- He would definitely replay those championship points.

2010 would've been a battle against Nadal. Roger went off the deep end for a little while after winning #16 at the AO, and struggled in his early Wimbledon rounds, but I think he would've been ready by the final.
I feel more confident of 2011. Fed had beaten Nole at RG, so would've been very confident against him at Wimbledon. Rafa was on his last-grass-leg in 2011.

Yeah Wimbledon 2011 would’ve been a close one with him and Djokovic. If he was at same level as 2012 he might pull it off, that could knock on to USO too. Nadal wasn’t at his best in that final so Fed would be favoured.

It all balanced out for Fed! He won matches he shouldn't have while saving mutlple MP's and he's lost them when he had multiple MP's! That FO win in 2011 over Nole cost him in more ways than we imagined! If he had lost he could have left Paris sooner, might have worked harder after the loss, and probably taken Wimbledon! It balanced out with him losing on grass to Tsonga up 2 sets to love allowing Djokovic his 1st Wimbledon! Karma or whatever was overseeing things! :-D

I’m always arguing in favour of the importance of an Olympic Gold medal, and this is the big title Federer misses very much.

However, we don’t talk about being able to change results but just about getting a rematch. And as much as I dislike to say it, he just didn’t have it in him that day. He would clearly lose the replay as well.

Let’s just say James Blake deserves to be in Gryffindor for his performance. ;)

If I would choose any Olympic match it would be the Berdych loss in 2004. I think if not for this early obstacle he would have won the title. In 2008 he most likely would have lost the final against Nadal. Nadal was in one of the best runs of his career (which brought him to #1 for the first time) and had Federer’s number after Wimbledon.
