Hahaha, who's the guy that used to always call Sampras "Petros"?

I think he got banned, but he was funny

Peak Sampras would be playing the final against Federer, and would have probably done so a few times.

Peak Sampras would have the edge on peak Federer at the USO. 6-4.

No he wouldn't. Federer is better on hard than Sampras. I would give Federer the edge everytime on hard courts. Peek for peek, well, it's not even close who the better player on hard is. Sorry Pete lovers!

Is this another "my peek is bigger than your peek" discussion ??

OP...to win what...the tournament ?? - 0 %

Mark got an emphatic beatdown by Pete at that years US Open.

Ok.... but I don't necessarily see your point. I did mention that his best was rare, and to be honest, for that year at the slams that effectively makes them 'gave a beatdown, got a beatdown' really. This is especially so in the context of Sampras' ranking in both matches (1), and Mark's in both matches (40 and 20ish respectively).

Put another way - Mark (40) beat Pete (1) in the R32 in straight sets, a phenomenal win (and one of the first legendary night matches at the AO from memory). Again, at his best, he was more than good enough.

....at his best, he was indeed more than good enough - that match was great. Shame his best was indeed rare, often due to injuries.

I remember a match against Sampras QF at Wimbledon.
Thought it was going to be his year.
He was in control, one set up, dominating then guess what.
Those damn knees of his packed in again.

There are only two people on this planet that can defeat the Dark Lord of the Swiss. One of them, the Tower from Tandil, is injured, so..... but the other man is Superman, Petros Sampras. He of the pistol shot serve and jumping skills. With his serve and volley offensive, Superman can overwhelm the Dark Lord, despite Federer being the Chosen One by the tennis gods and possessing greater abilities in the Force. Expect a awesome 5 setter that goes to Sampras. Three tiebreakers won by Superman, the other two sets go to Roger with one break in each set.

he could maybe reach 2nd round if he played well... he's not in a good physical shape anymore (this claim is based on the exho vs verdasco not so long time ago).

in his prime... he would probably lose to Fed more often than not, since Fed would probably a relatively bad match-up for him (him being a man who relies a lot on his serve and being a serve&volleyer)

lose in the 3rd round. he would have to meet a seeded player soon enough. however if his serve was on a could see QF showing.

I would give Federer the edge everytime on hard courts as well...except for the US Open. Big edge to Fed at the AO, and definite edge on most all other hard courts. But at the USO, the lightning fast surface, and the ability of Sampras to turn it up in the finals would give him a slight edge over Federer, imo. This is all talking about their peak play of course.

At their peaks:

AO: Fed 7-3
FO: Fed 9.6-0.4
Wim: Sampras 6.5-3.5
USO: Sampras 6-4

So overall at their peaks Fed would still have the edge. Outside of slams? Even bigger advantage to Fed.

I do believe the better question is: would he have broken his back? Just kidding, all for Sampras but he is getting old, his backhand isn't the best and so many would probably aim for that and he may not be able to deal with a lot of the new techniques in the field today.

What would his chances to win have been ?

First , he would have to take a wildcard coz he doesnt have good enough ranking. USTA will bend backwards and personally deliver the wild card to him.

He would then have to face a seeded early in the draw, perhaps in the first round. You never know, he might be facing likes of Federer, Murray, Nadal, etc.

Since he hasnt played pro tennis this year, Pete sampras would simply get smoked by these top players [If Pete had been playing on the tour, he would go deep into the draw but there is no way he can come out cold and expect to win against these top seeded players]

In short, if Pete decides to play this Usopen, he wouldnt go beyond a round or two.

taken out in the first round. this is not a commentary on the memory of the tour player pete sampras, but an acknowledgment of the simple truth that he is not in shape to handle no fewer than three sets of full-speed, tour caliber play.

he'd hold his share of games, but the rallies would beat him up bad in about a set and a half.

If Sampras trained for a few months he could win the US Open. He would be injury free for the first time in a long time, and that would be a big edge he didn't have in previous years. He said he started using the latest racquet technology (which he ignored during his career) and his serve is faster now than it ever was when he played.

A No. Sampras is a 39 year old man. He is no longer in shape and would barely be able to last in a 5 set match.

A no. He's not even 40 years olds. Give him modern day technology, and his serve and volley style that players aren;t used to anymore and I can see him making it to the QF.

A now.I cant see him make the quarterfinals. He is just too old and even has a gut now. Not to mention that his speed around the court has declined tremendously. Serve and volley takes a lot of athleticism and stamina. Pete does not have those anymore.

I always remember Connors 1991 run. Legendary. If someone like Sampras could pull that off again it would be one of the greatest things in tennis ever

You fail. Pete would be lucky to make it past the 3rd round with the right draw. And Fat Dave has won something called the YEC, something Nadal has and never will come close to winning ever.
