If you could go back to a particular 2-3 year span of tennis which years you would choose?

For me I'd probably either go back to say 2003-2005 so I could see some of my favourites live that I didn't get to see in person during those years or more likely I'd go back decades to era's I hadn't even seen except on YouTube like the late 80's or the peaks years of Borg/Mac. Most interesting would maybe be the 50's - 60's so I could see the old pro's up close before the start of the OE, matches not seen by anyone for 50 years etc...

Difference being that it was mostly mental burnout in the first 3 cases whereas Murray picked up a serious injury that ultimately required surgery.
Oh sure, it's not like I'm making up a rule. Just interesting to note.

Was just looking up the best seasons OAT, and the only one who backed up an ATG season with another winning year was Federer really.

Fed always has to be the great exception doesn't he? ;)

How optimistic are you about his comeback? Only a couple of months away now.

I'm just hopeful, that's all. I note that he cancelled his planned re-appearance at the Glasgow Challenger and I can't help but wonder if that was because he doesn't feel ready to play yet. The grass season is still a month off so I'm just hoping he will have had enough time to prepare by then.

Did he give a reason? Murray loves playing in Scotland afterall.

Nothing wrong with him being cautious though really, shows he's got his long term future in mind - he still seems extremely driven and hungry to me (in a way Djokovic doesn't).

The best Borg/McEnroe years were good ones. With the added gravitas we give
slams these days those matches would be even more intense than they already
were.....but.....I gotta go with 2003-2005. Men's tennis lost me in the
Sampras years. I still watched the ladies here and there though. I remember
telling a non-tennis playing friend in 2004 during Wimbledon, "Men's tennis blows.
There's nothing, no one. The girls, though, hot hot hot. You gotta see this
Russian girl. She's an amazon. Just 17. Wears almost nothing. She's not the only
one either. There's a bunch of babes out there. Watch them, forget the men."

Little did I know. I didn't catch the Fed Express till Agassi at the USO in 2005. I
somehow managed to miss his first 3 Wimbledons. I missed Roddick's USO. I
don't know who this Marat Safin guy was. I know girls liked him, that's about it.
Imagine 2004. Nalbandian's being taken seriously!

On second thought I'll stick with the Borg/McEnroe years.

In the modern era, I gotta say 2007-12 (hard to pick off only 2-3 straight years tbh), but if we're talking all time, I would've really liked to see the late 70s/early 80s with Borg, Connors, Mac, Lendl, etc. That was also pretty much when tennis transitioned from being a "country club" sport to a popular "everyman" sport. The mid-late 80's wouldn't be bad either, but the 90's (with exception to Agassi) didn't attract me as much.

I would go with 2007-2009. Lots of great matches, Fed in his peak an later prime, the rise of Djokovic, the improvement of Nadal, the rise of Delpo, the rise of Murray, the renaissance of Roddick, The rise of Sodagoat, Davy going on a rampage etc. Just too many great moments to count them all.

If the 3 years don't necessarily don't have to be consecutive, then I will pick 2009, 2011-2012. It's a shame 2010 was in between, otherwise it would have been one of the greatest 4 year periods in history.

Late 80s/early 90s, for me the most golden of all the tennis golden eras.

If not that then the late 70s/early 80s when they were kings.

Failing that, 26/27/28 (and dammit 29 too) sounds good. The rise of the musketeers and the fall of Tilden. Would love to see that. Cochet ending Tilden's 6 year run in New York, Lacoste the first man to win the channel slam, Tilden going to Paris for the first time to take them on in their place like they'd taken him on in his, getting his revenge on Cochet, going all the way to the final and losing an epic. Those Davis Cup finals they contested, and the Lenglen-Wills match at Cannes.

1980, 81, 82.

The greatest tennis match of all time at Wimbledon in 1980. The classic Borg-McEnroe US open final of 1980. Lendl taking Borg to the limit in 81 at the French. Borg coming back from 2-0 down against Connors in the 1981 Wimbledon semi. Borg finally dethroned by Mac at Wimbledon. Borg walking off court before the ceremony at the US and never coming back. And Jimbo coming back to beat Mac in the 82 Wimbledon final. An incredible match to watch live. Plus so many other memories of great matches and, equally important, great personalities.

When tennis was king.

90-92. Amazing tennis on all courts. Big variance of surfaces and styles of play. So many all time greats playing at the same time.

Truly one of the peaks of the golden era of tennis.

1999-2001. Huge parity. Three of the greatest GS SF’s ever. The greatest match ever played. The greatest tournament ever played.

Then a certain Belgian company became pervasive..

I date anyone to truly tell me how the level of tennis displayed by anyone the last 15 years can match the best from that era. Sampras-Agassi 2001 USO was one of the best displays of artistry and skill in the history of ANY sport. And Rafter’s net play was incredible and sublime. I still can’t believe many of the pinball wizard shots he pulled off watching the footage.

AND they did it with out any super stiff grease coated strings to jack up their spin levels. No one from today’s era can say that.

Can I skip a year?

If so, I’d choose 2008, 2009, and 2011.
Those were the three most exciting years in the past decade for sure.

Basically the title means which tennis years you, personally, would like to relive again?

Mine would be 2003-2005, because those were the days I started watching.
last half 2016 through first half of 2019. A lot of ups, downs, and surprises still to come.

For me, it's 82-83-84. Wilander's first French. Connors playing well. Unbeatable Mac. Lendl-Mac at the French. What a great run of tennis. So many brilliant matches. Yeah, Borg was gone, but the guys that followed him were so good it didn't seem like there was really a hole in the tennis universe.

Nice thread idea, OP.
