Davenport having more year end no. 1 finishes than grand slam titles in singles was crazy stuff (Wozniacki would late join her there), as is Venus only having 4 more weeks as world no. 1 than grand slam singles titles.

In 2 of those years, 2001 and 2004, Davenport didn't even reach a grand slam final, though in both years she won 7 titles. In 2001 she won 15 matches in a row during the European indoor season (quality wise often the best part of the WTA season back then IMO), but injured her knee during her YEC SF win against Clijsters, forcing her to withdraw from the final against Serena and sidelining her in 2002 until the US hardcourt summer. In 2004 she was 23-0 during the US hard court summer going into her US Open SF vs. Kuznetsova (including winning 3 tournaments in California in successive weeks), but suffered a left hip injury while warming up (she won the 1st set comfortably but increasingly struggled with it as the match progressed).

Swiatek is #1 because Barty retired and Osaka is off the circuit. At Wimbledon she couldn't find the court with routine forehands.

Unfortunately for Venus as SOON as she got to #1............... 2002 Serena happened, and won 4 straight slams. Then Venus got injured in 03. Weeks are so circumstantial it's ridiculous.

It was only for 1 week, but when Jankovic first became world no. 1 in 2008 ahead of the US Open, she hadn’t yet reached a grand slam final during her career, and had only won 1 title during the 52 previous weeks. That was quite something.

Admittedly if Henin hadn’t asked for her name to be removed from the rankings during her first retirement in 2008, she would have remained world no. 1 for another 3 months or so.

Regarding Swiatek, 71 consecutive weeks as world no. 1 is definitely extremely good going - she has won 3 grand slam titles, Rome, 4 WTA 500 titles and recently a title on home soil in Warsaw during that period, and is still only 22 years old. Impressive stuff.
I think it's 4 GS titles now? Anyway her lead over #2 grows smaller and smaller since her ridiculous adventage over the field in 2022. She is defending champion at USO so big pressure on her to make a big run in the NA.

3 grand slams during her time as world no. 1, which she got on the back of her title wins in Doha, Indian Wells and Miami last year. I think from memory if Barty’s name hadn’t been removed from the rankings per her request after she retired, she would have 3 more weeks as the world no. 1 (though she had a sizeable number of weeks as world no. 1 when she didn’t play during the pandemic chaos) before Swiatek took over.

Sabalenka was 1 match away from becoming world no. 1 at Wimbledon, but of course lost to Jabeur in her semi-final. It addition to seeing if Swiatek can defend as many points as possible this summer (she has shown more signs of getting rattled after losing sets recently), it will interesting to see how much energy Sabalenka has left in tank after her very strong results and consistency with a lot of matches so far this year.

Getting to world no. 1 is huge, finishing as the year end no. 1 is even more huge, and a ‘wall to wall’ year spending every week as world no. 1 is incredible if any player including her can pull that off.

I saw that Pegula is world no. 3, though way behind Sabalenka, having not reached a grand slam semi-final in the last 52 weeks (or ever), and with just 1 title win (albeit a big one at Guadalajara last year) and 1 other final appearance during that period.

1- Navratilova- 455 weeks at #1
2- Court- 398
3- Graf- 389
4- Evert- 260

The fact that Iga stayed no1, even after defending all those points of her unbeaten run last year, says a lot about her

From next Monday she will push Wozniacki out of the top #10 forever.

I have no idea how Martina is not considered the best women's player of all time. Between her singles, doubles & mix doubles GS wins, its crazy to think she's not thought of as the greatest.
