Eventhough she lost in a tight three setter to the best female tennis player in the world, Kim Clijsters, she showed us all why she is one of the greatest players in history

A remarkable comeback in the second and third set including saving match points..

She fought till the end like a TRUE CHAMPION that she really is

Welcome back Martina!

She shoulda got flogged by Kim.. instead Kim kept trying to hammer her baby serves instead of focusing playing her own game. The result: Unforced errors and 6 straight games to hingis. That's what you call a freebee set.

Yes, I'm proud of her too, but you've just given away match results in the General Pro Player Discussion forum.

I wonder what the point of having a Match Results subforum is, then.

I love Martina Hingis and I'm glad to see her back and looking fit :). She does need to work on her game. She had to really rely on Kim Clijsters making a generous amount of errors to win that game. She can't go on playing like that if she wants to win Grand Slams again. Especially if she has to face several opponents.

While it was indeed tight (in reality), clearly if Kim Clijsters was on top of things -- Hingis would have lost much more quickly if she didn't donate a god awful amount of errors. Clijsters has more power on the defensive shots.

I can't recall of any tennis player...gone for 3 years and reaches the QUARTERFINALS of a Grand Slam tournament few weeks after she returned... losing to the number one player in a tight three setter

It's called the WTA: tour of chokers and players that can't hold serve.

Agreed, she played very well, and took Clijsters out of her game in the 2nd and had her chances in the third, close match, she is flat out the most consistent player on either tour.

Very happy for Hingis. She ended her first slam event on a high note after it appeared she was going to get bounced easily by Clijsters. It turned out to be a good match.

Kim had her forehand locked in the entire match. She hit a ton of winners with it that were right in the corners. She did donate a lot of points in that 2nd set, but it seemed to me that Hingis caused quite a few of them with those high looping shots to her backhand. I hope Mauresmo was taking notes because she's capable of hitting those same shots.

The word "consistent" on the men's and women's tours has two completely different meanings.

i do love martina (always have) and i'm glad she palyed well. what impressed me was how she gave clijsters such a good match (even if kimmy did make many unforced errrors) because when she quit the first time she was really contantly struggling against those power players (and her game is so much more pleasing to the eye:)). this is a really good sign for her and i hope that she continues to play well...

I agree, glad to see Martina back. She plays a different style and at a different tempo than the free swingers, such as Clijsters, are accustomed to. Like Schnyder and Schivone, doubt she'll be overly successful, but I'm glad she's back.

agreed, but I think that Hingis is more consistent on her tour, than any of the men on thier tour.

It was great to see Hingis play and compete with Kim. However i'm still not convinced she can beat the top women consistently with the game she has. Her 2nd serve and return of serve are still not good enough. I also think she needs to shorten points against the power players. Mary Carillo said that the longer a point goes the more it favour Hingis. I complete disagree with this. It seem to me the more balls a power player faces, the more opportunities they have to finish a point with a big shot.

I think the best way Hingis can counter these players is to get them out of position early and then finish the point. Easier said than done.

Congrats Martina! (400th post)

Congrats to Martina - very enjoyable run. It was nice to see someone playing counter to the current trend. She nearly pulled it off.

Also, it took a while, but 400th post!

I really enjoyed this part from her transcripted interview on the AO website:

Q. We think you're more aggressive than you used to be.

MARTINA HINGIS: You think so? Yeah. Well, thanks (smiling).

Q. Looks a little bit more power.

MARTINA HINGIS: More power?

Q. Is that true or not?

MARTINA HINGIS: Well, maybe the technology of the racquets. I always tell Yonex, "Come on, I need more power."

I'm not sure I agree she's playing with more power. I think a lot of that power was coming from Clijsters shots.

I am truly pleased with the performance of Martina Hingis is this Australian Open. Hopefully it is just the first of many great things on the horizon.

'The hardest she served today was about 173 kilometres. That's harder than she used to. She plays a better game than most sub top, she'll be back, I don't like her, but she can be back.

Klijsters average 2nd serve (91 mph) was faster that the average Hingis 1st serve (88 mph). That's always going to be a problem.

I'm with you. The top players will have her on the defensive before she can get a foothold in a point.

It will be interesting to see if she can't get to the semis and finals, how long she'll hang around. In her interview she hinted about already missing the free time at home. For those of you who are big fans, I wouldn't wait too long to go see her - this Reunion Tour may not last very long.

re: pusher and counter puncher

Hingis is a pusher and a counter puncher. This style of play can be effective, but I don't think she'll get past the heavy hitters.

Welcome back Martina!

Kim Clijsters is not the best in the world. The best WTA player in the world is Justine Henin-Ardenne.

Hingis is really GREAT talent, but with her speed and power she doesn't have the future among modern top players and she may lose to such 1-dimensional players as Clijsters, Sharapova or Petrova.

Are you on crack? Kim Clijsters is currently the BEST female tennis player in the world

She won the most the most titles in 2005 and was the winner of the last GS played in 2005 (US Open)

Ardenne? he, he You mean Hardenne? Kim is ranked higher than Hardenne so Kim is better than her

MammodoVA, I really don't know what you're talking about

I love Martina's game because even though she's been out for a long time, she showed that she can make a run despite the fact that she is a wild card. Give her some time and she will be back to her old form.
