Is Djokovic the Pearl Jam of tennis?

Alice in Chains started out as a hair metal band and jumped on the grunge wagon only after their contemporaries and managers advised them to. Some of their harmonies are nice, but at the end of the day, it is just a bunch of musical cliches.
By the time Alice in Chains released their first album Facelift, the glam was almost gone from the music, with I Know Something ('Bout You) being the only track reminiscent of the genre.

This was more than a year before Nevermind. The only existing major label Seattle big 4 record at the time was Soundgarden's Louder Than Love, which despite having a cult following, mostly failed to make a dent in the market.

To put it simply, there was no grunge wagon to jump into at the time, at least not in the mainstream.

Facelift is more upbeat than their later material, I can see maybe a bit of a 80s hard rock influence, mixed with a heavier sound. A little bit like Mother Love Bone.

Here is AIC very early on performing a song that was never officially on a record, with another name lol :

The main riff reminds me a bit of Van Halen or Ratt (which I like).

I am the grunge king. If we're doing the Big Three as grunge bands?

Fed is Soundgarden. Both came first. Both were game changers. Both paved the way for future bands/players. Both were supposed to be the Greatest Thing Ever.

Rafa is Nirvana. Both came on the scene second and charged to the head of the line in no time. Both are iconic.

Novak is Pearl Jam. Last to the party. Nobody took them seriously at first. But the kept hitting, recording. Until they were finally considered equal to Nirvana and better than SG.

Nirvana was short-lived and self-destructive. It killed both its own style and its genre. I always suspected Kurt actually hated his own band. The music I like though, it synthetized so many different things. You get Black Sabbath, you get Beat Happening. At the end of the day, its legacy is bigger than the band ever was and the end cast a shadow over it all. Nirvana was like the perfect opposite of Roger.

Pearl Jam was for the most part a generic wimp rock. It's the type of band tiny bald managers of small hotels are passionate about.

Alice in Chains started out as a hair metal band and jumped on the grunge wagon only after their contemporaries and managers advised them to. Some of their harmonies are nice, but at the end of the day, it is just a bunch of musical cliches.

It's more like...

Roger = The Beatles -- started out rough, then cleaned up, ended up aesthetically superior, but not overly interesting, clean throughout, marketed like crazy, overexposed and overrated and overpraised.
Rafa = Rolling Stones -- much nastier, much sweatier, a good antidote to Roger, but at the end of the day, just a bunch of followers. He even risks hanging on too long.
Novak = The Kinks -- they were banned from the US! They were like a cross between the Stones and the Beatles. They had more to say than both of those bands combined. They cared about the little people and they wrote music about their lives. At the end of the day, they're ultimately underrated despite being a bit boring.
Rafa has always been original and interesting.

Pearl Jam are not equal to Nirvana.

The hardcore Grunge people said that Nirvana sold out in October 1990 when they changed their record label from Sub Pop to David Geffen Company Records. Nirvana's first album Bleach in 1989 (which got a re-release in 1992) is pure Grunge, with the slower, more chilled out pace mixed with the dirty, distorted sounds.
Still not better than Somewhere in Time imo, but hey if grunge is your thing, don’t let me stop you.

Hahaha, Rock and Roll has been in quite a slump for quite a while. Those three ‘bands’ have helped keep it there.

Djokovic is the Rick James of tennis, much derided and overlooked compared to his contemporaries Prince and MJ but talented and accomplished in his own right

Pearl Jam is a good band but can be a bit boring and predictable at times and to blame for the whole post-grunge scene. But I don't find Djokovic's game boring at all so I don't see the resemblance.

Federer and Nirvana is a valid comparison in terms of popularity and impact, they're both the biggest.

So I guess I would go with Djokovic as Alice in Chains in a way as he is not as popular as Federer and Nadal the same way AiC is not as popular as Nirvana and Pearl Jam. But you can make a case for Djokovic and AiC being the best of the 3 despite being less popular (But I can also see Nirvana as the best).

So Murray would be Soundgarden and Wawrinka Mother Love Bone?

MuryGoat - more proof!

I really enjoy Nirvana and they have the mystique of being gone too soon, but "Ten" is better than anything they ever did and is one of the best rock albums of all time.

They burst on the scene with that, and then just settled into the second tier and said "We're good"

So Pearl Jam are the Andy Roddick of rock & roll

More for a European crowd here.

Federer = Blur
Nadal = Oasis
Djokovic = Radiohead (burst on to the scenen and put an end to Britpop)

Murray is Suede, Stan is Pulp.

Djokovic termed the big 4 reunion at laver cup a "backstreet boys are back". Not much to rank up to with atgs with that premise.

He was up there with them at the dawn of MTV in acclaim but his “extra curricular” activities derailed his career which is what he’s notorious for today
Extra curricular activities like women and cocaine? Yes I agree. :D Amazing talent though, vocally and on the instruments, and a hell of a writer.

Not in the meainstream, but there was a vital local scene with major label people sniffing around Seattle as grunge was gaining traction in England and California, and part of what happened there and then was AiC hopping the stage in a drag, playing Poison revival, and then changing their sound on advice of Soundgarden, changing into flannel shirts basically overnight.

Of course all that happened in the seemingly prenatal days, before Nirvana exploded and flannel went mainstream. But that does not change the fact AiC were grunge wagoners. They were the pioneer grunge wagoners. Nothing like Silverchair, but yeah, Cobain called them the first time offenders for a reason after Dirt. Even when you watch their Facelift era videos, they still have that strong 80s **** rock vibe. Interestingly, they were likely the most influential of the grunge bunch. All the (bad) post-grunge music is linked directly to them (or Pearl Jam), which probably makes them look worse than they were.

Rafa has always been original and interesting.

Interesting, no doubt. Original? In a way. He was and is unique in the sense Rafa took Bruguera's topspins and combined them with Hewitt's relentless run and chase, and worked to make this style effective on faster courts too. By now, you can say he added Connors-like longetivity. A unique approach. But the only thing I would say was truly original in the sense of there was nothing before Rafa was his dressing choice of the day when he still sported sleeveless shirts combined with capris. That really was... something.

“Cocaine is a hell of a drug”

Despite his talent the younger generation only know him from the Chapelle show lol

I don’t think Djokovic’s on and off court incidents will derail him but it will affect his position in the slam race. One too many missed opportunities could catch up to him eventually

True, and yea he doesn't get the credit he deserves. They probably also know him from "I'm Rick James b****!" that happened at an awards show years ago. Lol

This is true because he's not getting any younger. Things change quickly in tennis so I never think anything is gjven. I guess we will have to see how it plays out.

Rick and James Brown are legit genius level entertainers who never get the credit they deserved.
True, although I do think MJ gave JB his due and he looked up to him, so that brought a lot of attention to him in his later years. Rick James never had someone like that publicly acknowledge him and I think a lot of people don't really know his music, although he was brilliant.
