Is it a mystery how Nadal has won more US Opens than Djokovic?

Ayyy good to hear from you bro. I’m doing well. It’s been a little rocky, I was briefly hospitalized for none other than pneumonia caused by the Rona (26, no preexistings, immaculate health so it came as a bit of a surprise) so that wasn’t fun but I’m fine now. Mom caught it too but somehow despite her advanced age and arthritis fared better than I did which was a blessing. Hope the same for you and nice to see you back here.

Life and its randomness dude. As soon as she got it I was freaking out figuring it’s hardly even possible for her to only have mild symptoms given how it did a number on me (like I said, no health conditions, young, exercise 5 days a week, 12-15ish% body fat, never spent an overnight at a hospital, only been sick a few times in my life), but she had little more than a cough that disappeared after a day. Playing the waiting game with her and wondering if her symptoms would accelerate was by far the worst part of all this.

That really is crazy. As much as I was skeptical about the vaccine I went ahead and got it bc you really just never know. Glad you and her are ok :D

The only thing that matters is the immune system you have. You could exercise 7 days a week, have BF% 5 and die as it is not natural to have so low BF and consequently your immune system is stuffed. I insisted to all of my guys do not cut down during this period, bulk up on supplements such as Vitamin D3, K2, Zinc, Magnesium Citrate, Vit C, Beta Glucans, Omega 3. They have been taking it for over 12 months now and NONE of them got it (that we know of). I am 100% sure that all of us got it at some point but we never ever felt a thing considering we have not been protecting ourselves and we have been mingling with other people. To simply avoid it for more than 12 months is not possible, I think. So, she may have a better immune system than you at the point of the infection. Nothing unheard of.

I am glad you and your mom recovered well! It's surprising and scary that it hit you that way having in mind the overall condition of your body prior to the illness, but it just shows how dangerous and "unpredictable" the virus is.
I'm great, I caught covid last July, but thankfully the symptoms were mild - a fever for 5-6 days and lost sense of smell and taste for 20 days. The only after-effect I'm still experiencing is that the onion smells much worse now, but that's a very small price I would say.

I agree, I really don't see how anyone hasn't had it by now. Just some people are getting it again and that's what got me concerned, maybe getting it again and it being worse.

I know we are going into hypothetical areas, but I do think that Djokovic is a formidable match-up for Delpo and probably his toughest opponent on Tour. He feeds off the pace and is like a wall for those big hitters who usually exhaust themselves or eventually miss due to the low-percentage tennis and the insane amount of points in rallies they are forced to play.
It would be very hard for Delpo to beat him in 2009 imo.

Yep. My thoughts exactly. Match ups.

Being worse for those that got it the 1st time around,,,yes, because they have a predisposition to it...AND....their bodies have not recovered to a desired level. Let's put it in numbers....Level 7-9 perhaps get it but no symptoms, while Level 10 - immune to it. Mild symptoms - levels 4-6 (for instance) and after it (perhaps) level 2-3. For them not to have it again they need to aim to Level 7+ That's how I see it.

It was pretty bad. Djokovic was in no condition to be making the USO final that year, but the draw just fell apart. He was right there for the pickings.
I think Nadal would have won it, had he been in Djokovic's shoes, as he somehow never misses an opportunity there :D

No, I mean that except when he is in his worst form, he takes advantage of every opportunity at the USO, eg if the draw opens.

Yes, that is true, however Djokovic wasn't good in USO 2016 either, one of his worst levels there. Only really made it with zero resistence and a joke of a draw. Facing the stanimal in the final was going to be a rough day.

Yeah, I agree, although I thought that he will win the final once I saw him winning the first set.

Eh, for sure immune function is central, and I haven’t narrowed down my health to a science, but based on my track record my immune system APPEARED to be quite robust…rarely got sick and when I did it tended to be mild, no preexistings, heart rate/blood pressure/oxygen sat levels ideal. I think some of it can be chalked up to the unpredictability of a novel disease. Fwiw among those you listed I do take D3s, Omega 3s, Zinc, Vitamin C and mag citrate, I have for years now :D

My mom, due to some immunosuppressant drugs she takes for her rheumatoid arthritis, is often hit hard by colds and what have you. All in all I’m just quite relieved.

I would be hesitant to make too many assumptions. Without an antibody test it’s impossible to really know whether they had it. Some people I know whose health are less than optimal also mingle quite frequently with the public and still have not tested positive, it does happen. Mind you I don’t take that to be the be-all end-all of considerations here. A young person can contract the virus, have it pass through them like it’s nothing but also spread it to people that aren’t fortunate enough to be young or healthy.

Stanimal found his timing.

Anyways, concluding for my thoughts in this thread, Nadal is the greater USO champion 4 >3, but Djokovic had the tougher draws/competition. These two things are not mutually exclusive, both can happen.

Djokovic dealt with Federer's peak, prime. Overall 6 matches.
Djokovic also faced Lendlized Murray, the same Murray who was two games from beating Djokovic that very same year in AO.
Djokovic lost to Stanimal, the same Stanimal who actually beat Djokovic at AO, nearly beat him again there in 2013.
Djokovic faced peak version of Nadal at USO.

Has Djokovic not taken all his opportunties, yes. 2014 and 2020 were bad ways to go out, and I think Nadal would never have let such things happen. Hrnce why it is 4 > 3 as it stands. Nadal made the most of his opportunties when they were presented, Djokovic didn't, but Djokovic overall also had the tougher competition.

Such an eclectic and diverse set of symptoms eh? Glad your case was mild. Oddly enough I lost my sense of smell and taste for a few days at most. Initially I tried working from home but it got to the point where I couldn’t get through even a single sentence with a client without coughing, by the time I got admitted to the hospital I likely had pneumonia for several days. Then, as quick as the onset, the symptoms started to vanish one by one, gone a few days after that, oxygen levels went from 87 (briefly) to a normal 96-97. The corticosteroids they prescribed did wonders. The hospital was helpful enough to book a hotel for me, free of charge (I believe our provincial government is running such a service to keep people away from their immunocompromised family) and I quarantined there for a few weeks thinking my mom was in the clear and feeling quite satisfied until she got her diagnosis.

Agreed that it’s hard to fathom given how much time has passed but I do suspect the people that think herd immunity has been achieved are celebrating in vain. All of the antibody studies I’ve seen don’t suggest this, and global daily case rates are back to peak levels (due in large part to surges in India and elsewhere.)

Don’t get me wrong, I’d LOVE it if this were so, absolutely would. But it’s probably wishful thinking.

Well, what dosage of Vitamin D3 do you take? The standard 400IU as recommended or higher? I take 10,000IU for years. Since it became available. Before that I took 5,000IU for years. IMO 400IU isn't enough. But has to be taken with Mg, Zn, and Vit C and Omega 3 as its performance it then optimised.

P.S. Find David Sinclair from Australia on YT and read up what he has been studying. (Nothing to do with COVID19) I have been following his experiments (for years).

Djokovic is a much better hard court player than Nadal, yet Nadal has won it 4 times to Djokovic's 3 times. That's despite Nadal missing the tournament 3 times compared to only 1 time for Djokovic. How has Nadal won more US Opens? I'm confused.
Djokovic has won more h/c titles but that doesn’t necessarily mean he is better on hardcourt than Nadal. In Australia Rafa has been hampered more times with injury that at any other tournament so Djokovic hasn’t won it with Rafa playing at peak condition all the time, or even pulling out halfway through with injury. Rafa has also won the Rogers Cup 5 times to Djokovic’s 4 and Rafa won the Olympic Gold medal on hardcourt beating Djokovic on the way.

Injury is Rafa’s greatest opponent.

I guess because the myth that he is just a clay court specialist started to spread at some point, so people couldn't explain how a red dirt expert could find success in HC major, completely ignoring the reality that he won two masters on HC and lost another close final to peak Federer in his breakthrough year.
Facts.

And Nadal would have still remained a clay courter had he lost that 2008 Wimb final.

Off topic and I may have asked you this already, but did you post on the Bleacher Report forum in 2011/2012? I'm quite sure I remember your name from there. I had the same "name" there.

It's not a mystery, Nadal has so many US Open titles thanks to Deco Turf, a slow hard surface (in the 2010s) with high rebounds of the balls. On Australian Open, the bounce height of the balls is lower on average, so therefore Nadal won there only once. Nadal is depends on the height of the ball's bounce, when the bounce is high enough, Nadal is great everywhere, on the contrary, when the ball's bounce is lower, Nadal is also even on the clay vulnerable.

Djoker more suits courts with lower bounces of the balls, so therefore he is more successful at AO and Wimbledon than at USO and RG.

I am glad it all went well and it seems the government there is doing a good job to make the people as less stressed and as much comfortable as possible. The vaccination process is going surprisingly well in Serbia, maybe because there are no EU limitations when it comes to purchasing the Chinese/Russian vaccines, and the number of cases is dropping rapidly, so it's promising.

Pretty much.

I'd say Djokovic at Wimb and Nadal at USO even each other out in terms of facing prime/peak Fed.

Djoker's HC peak is higher than Nadal's HC peak, put up with it. Nadal is actually lucky that he only played twice with Nole at AO, otherwise he would have more defeats at AO with him.

This is the exact opposite to what people were saying before Rafa won the USO in 2010. In fact, it was categorically said that Rafa would never win the USO. In Australia, Rafa has had more mishaps than at any other slam that's what's stood in his way.

In 2012, Rafa wasup a break in the 5th set. In 2019, Rafa was coming off surgery on his ankle at the end of 2018; he actually said he hadn't had enough time to work on his defensive game which he needed against Djokovic who is a defensive player. Watch his post match press conference.

DecoTurf changed at the turn of the 2000s and 2010s decades, becoming a slower surface. This change obviously helped Nadal.
In Australia, Rafa won only one title, both because of the lower bounce of the ball, a factor that doesn't suit Rafa very well, and because AO is played at the beginning of the year, Nadal in the past needed a series of warm-up events to build confidence ahead of RG.

And Novak was up a break in the 5th set at RG 2013.
On clay, Rafa is stronger than Nole, and on hard surface, Nole is stronger than Rafa, which is a generally accepted fact. It is foolish to deny it.
As for 2019, you are writing excuses. Rafa was easy outplayed by a better player, come to terms with it.

That's after Rafa had already served for the match in the 4th set.

If Novak is stronger on h/c than Rafa why has he lost to Rafa, at the USO 2 out of 3 times?
