Is this the most disappointing Wimbledon semi final line-up in living memory?

Surely this is the lowest it's ever been? We don't have:

- Djokovic (12 time slam champion)
- Nadal (15 time slam champion)
- Murray (3 time slam champion, Olympic gold medalist and multiple slam finalist)
- Wawrinka (3 time slam champion)

We have a bunch of no-names in the semi finals. I certainly can't remember it getting much worse than this. All big names out, no exciting players left.

Roger going for #8
An American going for first wimby since Pete, first GS since 2003
A consistent top ten player seeking first GS
A chance for Cilic to get #2...Maybe catapult into top 4 or #1 in near future?

If it ends up being Sam and Roger that might actually get good ratings in the US, probably more people will learn who the heck Sam Querrey is.

Tbh, this is probably how slam SF lineups looked like before the Big 4 appeared. Last year was definitely worse than this year though. Should Cilic make the final, he's at least a worthy contender.

You gotta love the salty people on this board. I didn't hear nobody make a peep about the u.s open semis last year without fed, murray, and nadal.I bet joker had preparations for a GS but wawrinka had other ideas.
That was one of the worst slams in a long time, even though I liked who won.

Would love to see Cilic mentally in a GS final. He had the small luxury of playing Nishikori who also obviously didn't have a major trophy, so it will be very interesting to see his mentality against say, Federer, if it is that.

Just read that it's the first time since RG 2009 that neither of Nadal, Djokovic or Murray will feature in a GS semifinal.

Well Federer, Nadal, and Murray where not at the u.s open last year. It happens. Some of these guys are going through a rough patch and age as well. Past 30

A bunch of no names?? It's posts like this that make me realize how far pathetic these threads have become.
So of your no names we have:

Federer - 18 GS's, 7 x W Champion
Cilic - USO Champion
Berdych - W Finalist
Querry - Defeated man last year who had won his past 30 Slam matches.

Respectfully disagree. It's great to see a few different faces battling it out.

As someone who was alive in 1996, 2017 is far from the worst SF lineup in living memory...

1996 Wimbledon? Pete Sampras and Goran Ivanisevic both surprisingly lost their quarter finals, but we had that epic semi final between Todd Martin and MaliVai Washington, where the match was delayed overnight at 2 sets all, with Martin going on to lead 5-1 in the fifth set before Washington came back and won 10-8.

Can't impress anyone nowadays. I wonder what they think of some WTA SF in past years in terms of slam pedigree, most recently this year's RG.

I was so hoping for a Federer/Nadal final.....those two put on the best matches of all....classic stuff.....tennis isn't the same without that rivalry.

We saw it at the Australian Open and maybe if nadal was more consistent in surfaces other than clay we would see it more. Guy hasn't won anything on hardcourt since Doha 2014. That's ridiculous

Aside from stan, those guys are unwatchable. Nadal/djok take 40secs in between point and murray is just annoying.

Im not the only one who feels this way. Look at the ratings when they play.

Wimbledon with no names will still get better ratings than the french

Look I can see how a fan of anyone besides Roger in the big four is disappointed, but this tournament is far from being decided.

There's a 50 percent chance we get a brand new champion to cut into the monotony.

This isn't a bad final four at all.
Oh, come on. The outcome is NID. Federer isn't going to lose to any of these 3 mugs. The only thing that can stop him from winning this tournament is if he is suddenly HEAVY injured.

You seem to think I was implying something negative when all I was doing was stating a fact. Stop being so sensitive about topics concerning Federer ACE, you've been like this all day and it's becoming tiresome.

This will be one of these threads that will come back in this forum in 5 years, where they will laugh of the current semifinalists in Wimbledon. All the injuries this year, bad courts and scheduling. I cant remember any Wimbledon being so bad.

Yes, but a mundane sounding semi turned in to an unexpected epic. Before the match started, one could be forgiven for being underwhelmed by the lineup, and that's what this thread is about.

Nadal was at the 2016 US Open, losing to Pouille in a fifth set tiebreak in the Round of 16. Murray was also at the 2016 US Open, losing in the quarter finals to Nishikori in 5 sets. It was 2016 Wimbledon that Nadal missed.

I am saying they didn't make it to the semis. He mentioned semis and the other big 3. It will be interesting to see if nadal does anything in the summer hardcourt season. He can still play on these surfaces but the fact that he hasn't won a title other than clay since Doha 2014's mind boggling with all these tournaments you have.

Yes, you're right. Boris Becker was the second favourite for the title, and he had a freak wrist injury after the first point of the first set tiebreak against Neville Godwin, where Becker stretched to reach a wide serve and his wrist went. Krajicek blew Sampras away, and I was thinking that this was Ivanisevic's chance, only he then lost to Stoltenberg just as I was getting used to Sampras having lost.

We'll see. I'm feeling good about it but you never know.
I saw Cilic's match. Judging by his level I have no doubt even Nadal would have destroyed him, leave alone Federer. Which makes Nadal's loss to Muller even worse. Federer-Nadal final would be realistic. And even though Federer would have probably won it, still it's better than Federer-Cilic. Cilic will have to up his game DRAMATICALLY to hope for something.

Federer, player of the year so far and looking for his 8th Wimbledon crown, Cilic a former US Open champion and past Queens Club winner, Berdych former Wimbledon finalist who has beaten Federer at Wimbledon and Querrey, another former Queens winner who beat the defending Wimbledon champion. Querrey has a win over Nadal in 2017 too...so that's a pretty solid line-up.

The Big 4 have to fear injuries, in their advancing years, more than any opponent. Fed is holding together better than any of the others. All of those years of clean living in paying off I suppose. o_O

Don't count out cilic. He has these huge groundstrokes. For a guy that's 6'6 he moves pretty well.

Cilic versus Fed is still a very compelling matchup. Especially with Cilic demolishing Fed in the USO SF in 2014 (I think that was the year) and then choking against Fed last year in the Wimby QFs. So it is far from a sure thing. I agree though that if Fed plays Querrey in the final then no one will give Querrey any chance to win.
