Is playing pretty well, hitting big on his serves and forehands. Still seems way out of shape (look at his stomach) and has only an average backhand and sometimes poor shot selection. Mayer seems to be gifting Sock this match. I hope Sock can get more in shape and get better, seems a little like roddick (big serve, forehand) but still has a lot of development left.

I've had my fill of swaggering Nebraskans bellowing celebrations pugnaciously, in some kind of unintentional tribute to pre-verbal communication when intimidating roars were de rigeur. Thankfully, I can just put the kid on mute and hope that he papers up the hole in our sport where our promising up and comers should be.

The sooner he puts a sock in it the better, though, as I preferred the more humble Sock from last year who wasn't nearly so in-your-face.

You're not taking that sudden death loss lightly, are you?

Well after you win Wimbledon, pick up a Bronze Medal at the Olympics and reach the final of Cincy, you aren't gonna be very thrilled when some jackass trolls you day 1 of the US Open..

mayer sucked yesterday no doubt

but sock was absolutely crushing forehands
he has an unbelievable first serve when its on, and his second serve reminds me of a top tier one, ridiculous amout of spin to it.
i dont really think his backhand is weak, he likes to come in the net which is awesome, he has good hands, but he was also taking a lot of backhands early on the return then rushing the net, great great stuff
this kid will jump to about 200 in the world with a next round win, i fully expect him to be a top 75 player in a year, and top 30 player before he is 23, maybe even better

Sock is very good player, he had Roddick on the ropes last year in first set but failed to convert BPs. He's on the way. Weird effort by Mayer though, very strange effort. To put it mildly.

I think his backhand is atrocious. Is there anyone on the mens single side in the US Open that has nearly as bad a backhand? I cant think of one person. His serve is top tier like you said and his forehand is very powerful but at times unreliable. Backhand is a huge liability and uses an extreme grip and doesnt follow through. Opens up the court by positioning himself to hit forehands and exerts tons of energy running around the backhand. His movement is ok but he certainly doesnt look like he is taking his diet very seriously. Lots of potential but he needs to work hard and technique wise I think his backhand will always be a liability.

He runs around a ton too. Basically looks like he is wiping straight up the back of the ball on his backhand. But if he can get that tweaked, he has all the tools.

He really bores me to watch him, I don't have anything against him, but today was the first I've seen him play and I almost fell asleep

+1. If Sock does win that to make the R16s that would be impressive. Almagro isn't great at the USO - 11 and 7 - and R32 is his best ever result...

The light bulb has turned on suddenly...today's victim waxed Sock 1 & 3 last month in L.A. He will be fresher than Nico for sure but no lead is safe at USO'12!

if Sock loses today, he will be out of ATP tour ranking. and he may retire. Big match or what

Jack is playing today with a new string (yellow color) instead of his usual ALU Power. He’s also using a 2015 Pure Aero paint job instead of the 2019 he’s used all year. Interesting.

Breaking back and forth in this match. Sock just isn’t moving well. He might get through this match. Still strange that a pro would change strings and maybe racquets this late in the season.

And retires for the second week in a row, he was limping around a lot, seems to be a back injury. He’s scheduled for Knoxville (I believe) next week and Davis Cup in a few weeks, see if he plays or not. Looks like he needs to end his season, get healthy, and play futures next year.

My best guess would be that after 6 months off, he never really got into shape, and it caught up with him by the end of the year with the back issues.

That weight gain is absolutely killing him. He needs good movement to setup his forehand - his biggest weapon - without it he isn't much of a singles player at all. He has such an extreme grip and swing path that it's so unforgiving if he can't get into position.

To bad about that WC to IW Jack! And soon clay season is taking over and you have no chance there, and won´t get WC in Europe. Looks like another sh!ty year for Saggy Sock.
