Jankovic, Ivanovic,and Vaidisova

I have a feeling that these three girls are gonna be at the top of the game very soon. I think Sharapova will slip down to 5, Henin to 3 or 4, and Mauresmo to maybe 8. if Hingis doesn't add some more pop to her game I see her out of the top 10 and probley leaving the game soon after. Serena is hard to predict but I think if the three girls I mentioned gain Henin type confidence they will be hard to stop, even for a energized Serena, mainly Jankovic and Ivanovic. Don't know the purpose of this thread, Im just a fan of Jankovic and have noticed the potential of these three girls. Seems like Sharapova has been out of tennis for to long this year, and Henin well she's great and she has beaten Jankovic three times this year, we will see I guess.

Mauresmo was injured and sat almost 3 months due to her surgery
Hingis has back problems because of R.S

oh and Vaidisova is 50-50 go at the French this year because of a nasty wrist injury so don't crown her just yet because she has her semis points to defend(if she pulls out of RG she will lose +400 points (Starbourg-RG semis) and she pulled out of Strasbourg citing "medical advice" and she has a load to defend this summer and early fall.

Sharapova went out in the Quarters at the French last year and despite a weak tournament in Turkey this coming week,V.Williams is still in draw and we all know Williams is a waaaaay better player on clay than Sharapova so... and let's not forget Pova all the summer tournaments she won while Mauresmo and Henin sat out injured last year and the USO.

Jankovic has a lot to defend too starting in july-August and her USO semis

If i had to put my money on someone here it would be Jankovic. AlthougH i'm worried because she plays SOOOO much tennis, I feel she is just setting herself up for an injury. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Then I'd pick Ivanovic.

I think it'll be some time though before they ever reach the status of someone like Henin.

Its interesting to look at the winners of the bigger clay titles this season.. totally not what I would have expected.

Amelia Island - Golovin

Charleston - Jankovic

Warsaw - Henin

Berlin - Ivanovic

Rome - Jankovic or Kuznetsova

Injuries injuries injuries galore, so I guess its not too suprising the big names are not on that list (ie Mauresmo, more of Henin, Serena, Hingis)

Jankovic is the "real deal" from the trio. The others are good players but have not shown the consistency to be a major threat at slams.

Jankovic is clearly the better of the three, but does lose her nerve at crucial times. If she can get her head together, there is no reason why she shouldn't be a consistent threat in the future. And, she is attractive in her own way!

The three of them are a fascinating study in terms of their strengths and weaknesses.

Ivanovic has the big serve + forehand combo, but she has a big build and her movement will always be her biggest weaknesses.

Vaidisova plays much like Venus Williams when she first started out. She has a powerful serve and can smack winners from either wing, her long limbs give her great reach and she moves surprisingly well for someone with her height. She's still developing mentally though and she has a tendency to go off and spray groundstrokes all over the place.

Jankovic plays much like her countryman Djokovic... solid to great in all aspects of her game (except the second serve!), but mentally she is quite a flake.

I could see Jankovic and Ivanovic as being consistent and going deep in slams in the near future, but Vaidisova has the best potential of the three to become 'dominant' in the vein of Henin and Serena.

Good post. Good points.

Agree, I also see these three competing for titles for many years to come. I especially like Jelena - if she is winning titles with major serve problems, then the shy is the limit.

Peer will also be a fixture in the top 5-10, imo.

Now this is a serious tennis post! Great analysis of all the players and if you didn't know the players it would impart some solid info! Way to go Alexandros! I think all of the mentioned players are developing mentally as well as physically, and Jankovic and Vaidisova will constitute a nice rivalry going forward. What do you think of Peer? What will prevent her from getting into the mix? Just curious as to your thoughts on her.

Ha, I missed this post. So you are thinking that Peer will be a factor as well huh Johnny? I'm thinking with her mental toughness, she will be in the mix on any given day.

Agree, she is clearly a tough opponent - relentless fighter.

We haven't yet mentioned my personal favorite rising star in the WTA... Anna Chakvetadze. Fun to watch, can change the direction of the ball from the baseline as well as anyone. Shoulder injury seems to crop up too often, hope she works through that.

I especially am impressed by Jankovic.. a little by Ivanovic.. Vaidisova needs better movement I think to get really high in the ranking.

jankovic seems the most likely to go far. as for the other two
1.what really annoys me is that vaidisova cant do an overhead volley
2.ivanovic is too consistent

Both are really hot though so shuld make great poster girls for tennis.

Seems like we are watching the same games. Chakvetadze is definitely one I like to watch! After her performance in the AO, I have been looking for her to do a bit more than she has, but she is also young and as you mentioned, has some health issues to deal with. The thing I see lacking with almost all of these young players is craft. They can all hit the crap out of the ball, but few seem willing and/or able to utilize their minds out there. They crush every ball when a much less forceful shot would gain them the point. They seem to have no concept of conserving energy and protecting their bodies. Very few take advantage of shots that are guaranteed to generate floaters from the other player. They hang back on the baseline and wait to hit another 2 or 3 baseline bombs. Who is teaching these kids to play tennis? Nobody maybe. They are teaching them to bash the ball really well though :)

I ca'nt believe Jankovic is playing Strausburg this week!!! She's played so many tourneys.. its unbelievable.
Yeah, I don't think that's a really good move if she wants to be competitive all year round. As a coach, I would restructure her schedule. Far too many matches for her body to hold up. She is risking career-influencing injury by playing so many tournaments in a row. Maybe she'll go out early this week so she can have some time to recover. Look for Henin to be in the final. She is one smart cookie! She knows what her body can handle and has scheduled accordingly.
