They were just saying in the RG commentary that Ostapenko's average FH speed is higher than Murray's and that she hits within 2ft of the lines around 40% of the time, whereas the highest in the men's game is Stan at around 31% of the time. Obviously, she's not facing the same weight of ball that the men have to deal with but it's still pretty extraordinary hitting.

Is that just for this match? The problem with WTA is there are plenty of bashers that just clobber the ball fast and flat but this doesn't win consistently because not everyone can be 'on' very single match in every tournament. Even today she had 45 UEs.

That second serve too...

Yeah, no kidding. Remember when Serena threatened that lines woman at the U.S. Open some years ago? And then remember Zvonareva was on the verge of getting double bageled by Stosur and she absolutely destroyed her racket?

Racket smashes? I don't have any statistics but I'm going to go out on a limb and say the women can't hold a candle to the men when it comes to number of smashed rackets or the frequency.

The men have had some high drama moments. Few as egregious as Serena's but McEnroe calling an umpire, a dentist in his other life, a jerk, and calling another the pits of the world then swearing at the tournament referee can't be ignored, Troiki calling one an idiot, the worst ever, Nalbandian's kick, Krygios and Tomic going at it with fans...

Why is that a problem with the WTA? It's how they play the game. I like it.

Umm okay, I wasn't talking about the ATP at all. I was just piggybacking off of the comment made by @Doctor/Lawyer Red Devil that "drama is more than guaranteed on the WTA tour." I certainly wasn't turning or trying to turn this into a Men vs. Women debate.. However, it seems as though that is clearly your intention. So I'll just say this: if you aren't here to talk about Jelena Ostapenko and/or the WTA tour, then please see your way out of this thread.

She could become the first WTA player (to my knowledge) to win her first career title at a Slam. What an announcement of a youngster to the tennis world would that be!

Just piggy backing off you that drama ain't WTA exclusive. Thanks for the invitation but I'll stay. It's moving that you care though. I'm gettin' all misty.

Her first trip to a final
would be her first title
first Latvian to reach a Grand Slam final
first unseeded finalist at Roland Garros since Mima Jausovec in 1983
youngest player to reach the final in Paris since Ivanovic 2007

I'd worry the FO curse would get her and she is a one slam wonder disappearing down the rankings for years

Do you consider some of the past FO champions one Slam wonders? I don't think I know what the FO curse is about.

I think she could be one of the best of her generation but nowadays you never know what will happen in WTA. We'll see, there is so much time ahead of her.

I like her. She actually has a personality and displays emotion on court. Something the WTA has been lacking with younger players.

The sooner that Halep gets knocked out the better. Every time she hits the ball it's like listening to the love child of a gorilla and Sharapova....

Well then you better be prepared to hit the Mute control when watching the Saturday final. Jelena is vocal as well. Not quite as loud but no less annoying.

From RG (official average FH speeds):

Thiem 84mph
Wawrinka 81mph
Nadal 79mph
Ostapenko 76mph
Murray 73mph.

I really like Ostapenkos game: ultra-aggressive and willing to go to the net.

That being said, to me, that list just goes to show how different the average gamestyle is between the men and women.
The WTA pros play very flat, whilst the ATP pros vary their game much, much more with regards to spin and pace - meaning they often take down the pace deliberately.

What is not apparent in the list below, is the spin rate. Without knowing Ostapenkos average spin rate on those FHs, Patrick Moratouglou in his "The Coach" section on Game, Set and Mats said Thiem had an average spin rate on his FH of 3577 (iirc), a little above Nadal. My guess is that Ostapenkos averages somewhere between 1000 and 1500, most likely around 1000.

Don't think the low spin numbers matter if she can get the ball past her opponent.

The other stats which I thought were interesting for Ostapanko were:

- only 4% of her shots are in the middle of the court
- 41% of her shots land within 1m of the lines.

This is how tennis should be played. Like Stan, like fed and like jelena. Flat out and pushing 80% of the balls. Enough with those murrays and Nole pushers.

Ostapenko's game is the mix of Sharapova and Kvitova's game (without their serve) She has fearless attitude like Pova (especislly TeenagerPova) and has ability to hit hard like Kvitova.

All she needs to improve is her serve, It's her weak link

Jelena Ostapenko, came from nowhere to be French Open Champion like a Hollywood script! Jelena has the game to win against "any" opponent, mentally tough like Justine Henin, powerful groundstrokes like that of Kim Cluster and now, lots of confidence to become number one in time! She just has to keep winning and can easily take the number one spot! The lady has come to win it all, her way! She has "game"!

The weak points in her game are her second serve and her net/volley skills.
If she improves those, which should be feasible, she will be very hard to beat.

She reminds me so much of Monica Seles. She has the same cute as a button quality that Seles did when she dominated here, and she hits it hard as ****, wears her heart on her sleeve, and doesn't seem fazed by anything.
