Looking at the forecast here, I might be able to get you something Tuesday or Wednesday.

Now you're going to be riddled with suspense aren't you? :)

Post videos of your best slice, kick-slice, power slice, carve slice, slurve, or offspeed hook.

J

I think I know what the first 4 are, but what the heck is a slurve and offspeed hook

Slice = normal slice
Kick slice = slice with alot of topspin component ?
Power slice = harder hit slice with less curve than normal slice
Carve slice = Opposite of power slice, less pace and more spin than normal slice
Slurve = ?
Offspeed hook = ?

Slice = normal slice
Kick slice = slice that kicks up and bends to the left of server
Power slice = harder hit slice with less curve than normal slice
Carve slice = only side spin from hitting at 3 o'clock
Slurve - slice with topspin
Offspeed hook = pancake serve to the left

Dont people call the slurve topslice, its better imo

Also its not my fault haha, ive watched some american football, and I know how that works, we have some broadcasts and so, but I don't think we ever have any baseball broadcasts on tv so..

Isn't it more like if the ball is close to the lines but could be going out, it might be better not to attempt a volley.

It's more complicated than that.

The batter often knows he's not going to swing at a pitch, even before it is thrown.

i.e. some batters will almost always take the 1st pitch, or will almost always take a pitch on a 2-0, 3-0, or 3-1 count, depending how many outs, what the score is, if anyone is on base, their previous history with that pitcher, the scouting report on that pitcher, etc. etc. etc...

A slurve is a slower serve, higher net clearance and a lot of hook to the left. Kind of like a top slice but slower and with more shape.

Hopefully the video from some practice points comes out. Had my short ball curve backhand slice to the corner going strong today. Transferring now.

I've been working on a spinny, medium-pace slice serve wide on the deuce side.

Not looking for an ace/unreturnable necessarily, but trying to pull the opponent out wide with the serve, so that I can target their BH on the next shot (or hit behind them).

Also trying to do it without an extreme toss too far to the right, which then gives away the slice serve.

That's some pretty good spot serving. I think this may be the first time I've seen a video of your serve, but you do actually hit a jump serve. Do you jump serve like that for flat serves too? I think you might be leaving a lot of mph on the table.

LOL damn no wonder you are all about jumping up into contact on my serve threads, that is one massive jump... Looks higher than most ATP players

@Kevo - thanks for the feedback.

Not actually a conscious jump, just trying to explode into the serve...

At 5'10", I need all the extra angle over the net that I can get to hit that wide slice :)

Still playing around with the wide slice serve toss, contact point, etc.

I have slightly different mechanics on flattish serves (but definitely still explode off the ground), will grab some video next time I have some downtime at the court and will post back to see if some tweaks would give more mph...

Still bracing myself for @Curious to tell me I need to lose 5 kg and drop the racket on edge :)
That’s bloody good ‘on edge’ moving racket, man. Well done. Regarding the weight I see a little tummy there probably around 2.5 kg extra!;)

Have you considered the kick/slice?

Toss the ball almost in front of you and go up the outside of the ball, making contact at 5 o'clock and swinging through to 1 o'clock.

It will put a little hump in the ball trajectory giving better net clearance and allowing a shorter angle and the ball will jump up instead of staying low.

I'm 5'11", at least right out of bed I am, and I don't feel like I need to jump to hit a slice. I sometimes hit flat serves wide and relatively short as well, so I think you may be selling yourself short so to speak! :)

That Dolgopolov video is great btw. Wonderful example of using the legs to leverage the whole body into the swing.

I think one thing that will help you a lot is getting the toss in a better spot. Here I go again... Say it with me now... Toss is the Boss!

Look at the Dolgopolov video and notice he's looking up at the ball as it's pretty much right over his head. It looks like you chase the toss to your right and you shift your body to the right as well. I think that's why your jump looks awkward. Also notice how it makes you open up early. Compare the two below. I think just correcting the toss will go a long way to getting you to that Dolgopolov look.

Thanks, will give that a try! I could definitely use a little more net clearance...

Do you differentiate between the kick/slice and the topslice? Or are they one in the same to you?

Thanks, will work on a more vertical toss and not opening up too early...

Kick/Slice I hit the ball at 5 o'clock and go up, same as a normal kick but on the other side of the ball (normal kick I would around 7.)

Top/Slice I hit at about 1:30 and go over the top.

So yeah, very different, the topslice will have more net clearance than the pure slice but less than the kick-slice and similarly the bounce will be about half way between them.

i thought kick serve was using topspin which is complete opposite of slice which i thought was underspin, can somebody explain this to me? I have no idea what a kick slice serve is...I was under the impression topspin makes the ball ‘kick’ and slice makes the ball skid so kick slice serve sounds like oxymoron (little giant, jumbo shrimp)

Slice is sidespin.

Sorry, bump-ish, but I really liked this idea. I wanted a new one that felt like "best", and I got a sufficient one today.

That one, looking at my racquet motion and the bounce, might be more of a topslice.

Also, a quite old one with worse placement, that seems like more regular slice. Seemed to have a better spinny hop away.
It's at 2:00.

That was back when I had no idea how to hit a kick serve, or...anything.

Hit a couple of decent topslice aces in a row, with the wind pushing against my lefty spin.

I might need to re-learn proper slice technique because I've been drilling kick serves so hard.
