Kettlebells

Any kettlebell fans in the room? If so what's your routine, are they your primary source of training, an accessory to other strength/conditioning work?

Borna Coric has videos of him doing loads of kettleball workouts. His fitness trainer Marino Basic is a big fan of them, here's one of his workouts for a player of his.

Used to do it religiously but now just doing some common barbell workouts. Am sure I will get back to it at some point.

I like the Art of Strength series.

Kettleworx works up good sweat as well and is much shorter than the Art of Strength, if you can stand the goofy trainer.

I workout with Kettlebells a lot. A good video to look up for guidance is Kettlebells For Tennis(http://ikff.net/shop/dvd/kettlebells-for-tennis/) Its worth the money. I use kettlebells to train along with olympic lifting, regular gym machines and running.
Kettlbells are great because they promote strength through the whole body and really enhance a lot of areas for your tennis game.

My favorite kettlebell workout is swings Tabata/interval style. Just progressively keep increasing the active time (cranking out as many correctly done swings as possible within the time limit) while decreasing the rest time and lengthening the number of sets. Also, I throw in push ups and planks into the "rest" periods. If I had to pick only one kettlebell workout, this is it.

For those of you who are in the market for KBs, I highly recommend the Ironmaster.

I bought it because I already have their adjustable dumbbell set. It is really nice to be able to adjust the weight of your KB to however you want it.

I did 75 kettlebell swings tonight at 35 pounds. Tied that in with wall walks and 490 jump rope. It was done in a 1,5,10 cycle where you doubled the reps each time, which is how i got those totals. We had 13 minutes to as much as we could. I probably do kettlebells twice a week on average. Really great workout.

^^^ Swings (single and double), cleans, clean and jerk, Turkish get-ups, over head press, goblet squat, pistol squat, single arm rack squat, squat press and much more!

I'd say a kettlebell is the single most versatile piece of equipment a gym rat can own (maybe with a TRX pushing it close)

How about a barbell?

^^^The reason I put a kettlebell up there is the simplicity, it's one small piece of kit, you can travel with it quite easily and you can perform a multitude of different exercises, both strength based and conditioning based with ease.

The turkish getup is awesome. Its not easy and is a full body workout. I do those too, along with weighted lunges. You can put the bell on your shoulder while you lunge. Hell, you can run laps with them too.

I did a bunch of kettlebell swings earlier this year. Mainly to try out the movement based on advice from other lifters here. Never got more advanced, and the kbs were in lbs and kgs.

I own a bunch of dumbbells which are lying in my closet. I bought it to rehab my wrist when I broke it, but never used it.

Got myself a 20kg kettlebell. Should really have got 16kg, overestimated my own strength but it will be lot's of goblet squats and swings for now, until I get stronger.

Certain kettlebell workouts (anything with that much weight in an extension of an overhead press; snatch, windmill, turkish getups) seem like a risk for a tennis player and liable to cause shoulder impingement. Plus, those positions with the shoulder often in an isometric hold (turkish getup) does not translate to any tennis motion or gain in range of motion or increasing velocity (rate of force). As for rotational movements with the kettlebell, again keeping with the average weight people use for kettlebells, it seems more risk than reward. That said, great for lunge and single leg deadlift or anything working posterior chain.

You know, based on what you have posted here, I think I need to rethink a number of things. I don't want to hurt my elbow, so I shouldn't play tennis. I don't want to sprain my ankle, and tennis can cause that. I don't want to strain a calf, and tennis could cause that. Tennis really seems like more risk than reward, frankly.

Why even bother?

I like to use them for some things. They're certainly easier to grab than dumbbells and they provide for more compact storage.

I’m still doing KB workouts. I actually stopped for a while and thats when I injured my shoulder. Coincidence? Maybe but proper KB technique strengthens the entire body and is great for tennis - IMO. Turkish getups will really stabilize the shoulder muscles among other things.

Currently doing 100 swings and 10 get ups as main workout. With cool down and warm up its around 35-40 minutes.
