Flash in the pan? Methinks thou haven't been paying attention. The kid has obvious flaws (tendency to play too far back, awkward forehand mechanics, etc.) but the tennis gods have been extremely magnanimous with this fellow. And the last few weeks made it very obvious he was primed for his first breakthrough. Give him time to hit puberty and find some self-awareness, and that pan gon' be sizzlin' for a long time.
PS Here he is on his way to the AO junior title, just over a year ago in tennis-minus-covid time...

Saw highlights of Stan and Lorenzo Mussetti match. First set Stan hit his groundstrokes out 90% of time beyond the baseline. Poor Stan, looks like he have not play in a while!

This Mugsetti guy has a sh*tty attitude. Disrespected Stan throughout the match with his loud uncalled for celebrations and constant talking to his team to bump himself up even when Stan’s game was clearly off. Pretty sure he got in his head, but Stan is too big of a person to b*tch about such meaningless things, especially when he’s not getting anywhere with his serve, hitting UEs left and right and moving like he did. Stan is pure class, at least on court.
Musetti on the other hand, I can see him evolving to become the successor of Fognini. Overall very cringe to watch (not as cringe however as that sad episode that was the 2019 AO boys final - which must mean there’s some hope I guess).
Other than his celebration antics, he reminds me of a poor man’s Tsitsipas, mostly balanced with no apparent relative strengths nor weaknesses although I don’t remember seeing him much up at the net. He was nonetheless solid from mid court.

Evolve into the next Fognini??? Muso is a well-mannered, humble and extremely articulate kid, with not a single unsportsmanlike bone in his body. Today, he even gave Wawrinka an ace which the ump had called out, at a key juncture in the match. He can indeed get down on himself at times and start complaining out loud, but I have never seen him disrespect an opponent, umpire, fan or anyone else in or around the court. In fact, his on-court behavior is far more subdued than, say, a young Swiss boy circa 1999.

I don’t find his game particularly aesthetically pleasing and most definitely not his backhand. A lot of people will often assume that a 1hbh is always aesthetically pleasing but that simply isn’t the case. His is even a bit awkward, it seems as if his arm/body are very stiff when he hits it. If you pay close attention his wrist is blocked and he almost never fully extends his arm after hitting. In any case, preferences aside, I have an hard time thinking about it as a strength - the placement is good on your highlights but the power is simply not there (yet?). The slice is even close to a joke, at the level he plays at.
I mentioned cringe in the context of the 2019 AO (I have a vivid recollection of him grunting even when he was hitting moonballs which makes no sense, being overall very emotional about points won and lost, calls etc. amongst other things) but fair enough, he was a bit younger then and it was a long match (although his opponent held his composure much better) so I shall not hold it against him anymore.

Wawrinka player poorly in first set, but a very intelligent performance by Lorenzo, with the right shot selections in most situations, some good, instinctive wrong-footing ones and a nice sliced backcourt smash being some highlights. Good concentration in second set and an unusual amount of options for such a young player. Great dropshots which worked well against sluggish Stan, but against other players it's important to not overdo them! He has the flair of a Gasquet but let's hope he doesn't stagnate like Reeshard, but blossoms like a Schiavone!

Diamond Age started in Fall 2018 with Medly Tokyo romp. Ends at end of this decade maybe. Six year generation rule is quite antiquated. Sinner, Musetti, and Alcaraz were not claimed in 2018. I'd be reluctant to call anything until you have a bonafied wave of talent superior to the previous. The 2nd coming of Fraud does not make an age as he is above such petty distinctions. These look like Diamond Age reinforcements.
FAA 20, Sinner 19, Mus 18, Alcarez 17.Lost Generation right before diamond age. Fedal started Golden Age. Weak era before this. Woolpants age right before that with Federe as kind of wool pants throwback stylistically.
New age could be worse or could be betterer. I don't even have reliable stats on Sinner. With Covid fraudulent measures ranking isn't even useful for at least a year. Too early to call.

My question is: why do some people get a kick out of denigrating exciting up-and-comers? Especially when the odds (and your eyes) should clearly suggest that you're bound to be proven wrong... Personally, I tend to get excited when a new face bursts onto the scene, Italian or not. I was even psyched about Carlos "The Warden" Alcatraz, when I watched him beat my Sinner Boy in a meaningless Spanish challenger. At this point - I'm not gonna lie - I already hate him. But I hate him because I know he's gonna be a beast. Not because I think he's gonna win 6 matches a year.

The guy has a good forehand and decent dropshots but average backhand and, most importantly, no serve as of today. Sure, it's all fun and games in the ITF but the ATP will crush him. Although I'm not quick to jump on the Mugsetti and Alcaraz hypetrains, I do agree with you on Sinner.

Dunno about the no serve thing... It isn't Isner, but it is still competent. He won this serve off of Nishikori:
And the kid can volley as well. He's 18, so he's showing promise. His endurance, strength, and shot-making should improve from here. I mean, it took Thiem 27 years to win a slam.
That's only 10 years more than the previous generation took(including the WTA)...*cough*. Sinner impresses as well. It's crunch time now at the IO, so we'll see how he and SInner fair.
