Main String Recommendations

Hi,

I am starting to break strings at a fairly decent rate and I find that I am unable to stick to gut in my mains as it is very cost inefficient. I am currently using Global Gut in mains with MSV Hex 18g cross at 54/58. The gut is breaking in around 2-3 hours. I tried using Armor Pro but it only lasted 7 hours with the strings feeling totally dead during the last hour. Probably going to try SilverString in the crosses soon, but doubtful if that would affect the breakage rate.

I would like some recommendations for a good main string as I love the combination of gut mains and poly cross. I do not want a poly or kevlar main string as they feel too harsh. I need something that is relatively durable, cheap and powerful. A thin gauge and good spin would be a huge bonus. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks.

Hmm, if you don't use the most durable strings in your mains (poly or kevlar), then I'm not sure what else you can do except trying a thicker gauge string.

Armour Pro is the most durable gut out there already. If it lasts 7 hours for you it's way better compared to other gut isn't it? And I highly suspect it's your crosses that went dead as gut maintain playability throughout their life. Silverstring in the crosses is one of the best choices as it maintains playability longer than most polys. Add stringsavers to it and that'll be as good as it gets for a gut/poly hybrid...

With string savers, I'd suggest deciding on a pattern before the strings begin to fray versus spotting weak points during a match and then putting them in at the changeover. I broke so many setups that were a few points away from getting a string saver put in.

Well I tried string savers already and they do not seem to work unless I line the entire sweet spot with them which I do not want to do. That kinda kills the feel of the string bed.

I am looking at several alternatives for the mains such as:
Forten Sweet
Gosen Micro
Weisscannon Explosiv
Ashaway Monogut

Any opinions on these strings? Keeping in mind the requirements that I need. :)

I would suggest Wilson NXT Max.

Forten Sweet 16 or 17: old school synthetic that plays very soft but I think it is too mushy for use in mains

Gosen Micro: crisp synthetic gut, out of the strings you chose it is probably the one I'd recommend trying first, but still would be a big letdown coming from nat gut

Ashaway Monogut: soft poly, but still a poly; I like this string a lot with a syngut or multi cross, but I wouldn't recommend it in your application (i.e. with a poly cross)
