McEnroe Go Away!

John McEnroe has absolutely no talent or intelligence for commentary. Is the network that desperate?
I used to love Mary Curillo. Where did she go? I cannot believe this man is making millions of dollars for his monotonous, predictable commentary. I have watched hours of the US open on Mute.
If I had a friend like him, I would drop him immediately, just because he's so BORING.

No, they're not desperate; there are more former players interested in broadcast jobs than there are microphones to put in front of them. And I certainly think McEnroe has intelligence, as well as some good insights about the game.

Tennis needs more professional broadcasters and less former players. Anyway, they talk as if we are blind and did not see what just happened. Or, the outside chance that we saw what happened, the talk as if we do not know what we just saw.
I like the feeds that have a full compliment of cameras but no announcers. They usually turn the court mics up so we can hear everything, including the ball. Sounds and feels most like being there.

There are plenty of good announcers, Koenig, Tarango, Jensen, Navratilova, Gilbert, Lindsay Davenport, Arias. Some not so good: Drysdale, Shriver, Fernandez, Cahill (so boring), Annacone.

The only person who would want Mary Carillo in the booth is her husband. Not because of $, but that means not having to hear her at home.

What exactly do you like in her ? She is better than Pam Shriver though.

Carillo is good as long as she has someone to keep her in her place. she does well as a supplement but not as the lead...

I guess I liked her commentary. She has a positive and mellow voice!

Maybe the game doesn't reward bubbly or interesting comments. Obviously, without a group of people (like football, baseball), they only have two people to study.

Mary Gorilla is terrible and should be in the booth as little as possible. The only place she should work is a Halloween haunted house where she can hear herself cackle all day which is her dream.

J Mac is way better than most, by the way.

none of them do anything to elevate my enjoyment of a match. i mute a lot.

what mute can't fix is the obsession with interrupting live tennis for taped feel-good pieces or interviews. i'll never understand that (even though i understand that the coverage isn't geared to someone like me). it's just that i watch a lot of sports, and tennis is the only one that does this so regularly. if you're watching any other sport - baseball, basketball, soccer, american football, etc. - if they cut away to interview someone, it's done super quick . . . maybe in a little picture-in-picture box at the bottom corner of the screen, or you just hear the talking as you watch the action . . . never missing a play. in tennis, you miss whole games and sets of action just to hear people talk (about nothing, really). live action almost becomes an annoying little necessary evil, disrupting all the talking heads and the caravan of interviews.

i just can't think of another sport that does that. a live sports event is supposed to be just that. i always thought the other stuff is supposed to be filler . . . not the other way around.

that boggles my mind more than any bad commentator ever could.

ESPN and Tennis Channel priorities in tennis programming:

1. People talking in the studio
2. Prematch interview
3. On-court interview
4. Postmatch interview
5. Random 5 minute vignettes and stories by done by guys like John Worthheim, preferrably about Serena
6. Serena shopping for shoes
7. Serena on the toilet
8. Any other interview they can scrounge up, with anyone possible
9. Story about tennis fans buying ice cream
10. Story about latest Nike, Lacoste etc fashions being sold and worn in the stadium shops
11. Tennis matches

Johnny Mac is sometimes no bargain, but my eyes glazed over when you said, "I used to love Mary Carillo." and I couldn't read any more.

McEnroe with Donald Trump. God that makes me puke!!!! Lost all respect I might have had for him.

Yeah, i averted my eyes the moment I saw that, but from what little I saw, it looked like he wanted to kiss his ring(and he gushed about his presence at the match in his pre-match comments).

What do you really expect from a guy that sells foot fungus cream.

Yeah, I've been meaning to mention that. Previously, the tackiest commercial by an athlete that I can remember was disgraced baseball player Rafael Palmero in his mid thirties doing a PED commercial, and he had the nerve to get upset when he came to bat on the road and the other team's organist(lol) struck up "Woody Woodpecker." I think Mac has nipped Palermo at the wire with the foot fungus deal...

She SURE is overly giddy all the time, isn't she?

Like she just ripped a silent one, and she's waiting for it to hit you.
