Given how many coaches toot their own horn, I became curious as to which tennis coaches were/are actually underrated. Here are my candidates:

- Jose Higueras (coached Michael Chang in 89 and Jim Courier from 91-97; 5 slams combined, coached Courier to one YE #1 and Chang to #5)
- Paul Annacone (coached Pete Sampras from 95-02; 9 slams + 4 YE #1)
- Darren Cahill (coached Lleyton Hewitt to #1 in 01 and Agassi to #1 in 03; 2 slams total + 1 YE #1)
- Roger Federer (no coach in 2004, won 3 slams; since 05 has had a coach in his ear most of the time, even if they have no official title)
- Toni Nadal (6 slams, 1 YE #1 with Rafa)

Please feel free to add other underrated coaches. As always, no hating, trolling or flaming. Thank you.

Peter Lundgren is pretty underrated. He knows the game as well as anybody.
Guess who he is coaching right now? Grigor Dimitrov. I'll be expecting great things from him.

Franco Davin.

Larry Stefanki's kind of underrated given just HOW MUCH he's accomplished.

Bob Brett.

Toni Nadal.
People make him look dumb, but he created a monster with a unique style.
Toni created a new gamestyle based on some Moya's atributes.

Serena Williams would make a great coach.

She can teach her students how not to be intimidated by small line judges.

How about Todd Martin. He did a great job of keeping Djokovic from imploding. Djokovic could have easily won that semi-final against Federer. It just wasn't in the cards.

What are you guys' thoughts on Richard Williams. I know some give him more credit than others do for the WS' success...is he overrated or underrated?

As he said himself, he's produced two more champions in his family then the entire country of England.

As crazy as he is, you got to give RW some props. Two daughters, 18 slams, pretty amazing.

Why's Federer in this poll? At first I thought it was a joke but obviously not. He wasn't coaching anybody so this is completely different.

Peter Lungren practically MADE Roger Federer, he laid the foundation for him.
John-Anders-Sjogren, carried Wilander too 7 GS, how many off you have ever heard of him?? Thats what i thought-that means he is underrated.

Uncle Toni, Coney, Franco Davin, Horacio del la Pena, Jose Higueras, Stefanki, Cahill....those guys are the rock stars of the coaching world.
Great coaches, all, but, how are all these famous tour coaches underrated? Compared to whom? Bolletieri and Gilbert? Rochey?

You want underrated, take a college coach with 8 unkowns and also-rans.....who's demonstrated an ability to always get the dubs point and scrape out a series of gritty wins over higher-ranked teams. That kind of mental toughness and desire is what I think makes him better than he's rated.

^I have a couple of examples in my head from the past 25 years^. My own college coach is included on this list.

And what about Peter Carter? Probably the most influential coach in Roger Federer's life.

Also, Brian Barker, who has coached Blake. Underrated because he is considered a club pro on the tour level.

What about the father of Paradorn? Considered a non-coach, but he coached three sons to a good level using old videos, LOL!

Then there's the unsung teaching pro who helps parents raise solid kids with integrity [and an all-court game] ..... and the kids end up doing well academically and in college tennis....and go on to be good citizens/professionals who contribute to society and maybe even give back to the game. That's the guy I see as underrated.

Oh, that local pro in Argentina that has coached Zabaleta, Del Potro, Gaudio, Monaco, and a bunch of other pros!

Papa Mirza !!!

What about our very own tricky, BB and Djokofan4Life ??

And the legendary Mahboob Khan who has coached his daughter to #1 in Junior and Senior in Pakistan.

And good ole Yuri!

And what of Davydenko's brother ?

LOL! THESE are the UNDERRATED coaches??! NO. These are the only coaches dr. troll knows!

Even amongst the few pros who have won slams, there are numerous coaches who are far more underrated. Like Leitgeib or even Carl Chang. Heck, even Tony Roche gets far less attention than the above clowns. These coaches SERIOUSLY and VISIBLY revamped the games of their players for the better.

For big names, Pancho Segura doesn't get the credit he deserves. An incredible tennis mind.

I agree, Roche is underrated and overlooked.
