Where is Thiem? I think Titis is prolly in best form right now...but can he do it from the mental perspective. Kind of like AO Med was in form and on a long winning streak and everyone thought he would get the win until he met the AO master. Same thing might happen here but this time it's Titsipas vs the RG master.

RG Final 4 = Zverev, Sinner, Tsitsipas, Nadal

Would like to see Thiem rise but he doesn't have a lot of time to rebuild.

GOAT prediction

Nadal at his peak couldn't win all four lead up titles to RG...

Here's the list of the five clay-court titles won by year:

2005: 4 (Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome, Roland Garros)
2006: 4 (Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome, Roland Garros)
2007: 4 (Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome, Roland Garros)
2008: 4 (Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Hamburg, Roland Garros)
2009: 3 (Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome)
2010: 4 (Monte Carlo, Rome, Madrid, Roland Garros) - only year he won all four at the 1000 level and above
2011: 3 (Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Roland Garros)
2012: 4 (Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome, Roland Garros)
2013: 4 (Barcelona, Rome, Madrid, Roland Garros)
2014: 2 (Madrid, Roland Garros)
2015: 0
2016: 2 (Monte Carlo, Barcelona)
2017: 4 (Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, Roland Garros)
2018: 4 (Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome, Roland Garros)
2019: 2 (Rome, Roland Garros
2020: 1 (Roland Garros) N.B. Monte Carlo, Barcelona, and Madrid not played in 2020

Weird that he managed to win 4/5 on nine occasions without ever winning all five. Presumably if they were spread out a bit more - a week between Madrid and Rome would be a good start - he would have had a bit more chance.

Yep, he could never win all of them in the same season. The closest he got was being a set away from winning Hamburg 2007 final.

Yeah, another interesting thing is that Roland Garros was always one of the four he won. He never won the four warmups in the same season.

Roland Garros is the only event that was always one of the four: Monte Carlo was not in 2013, Barcelona was not in 2010, Rome was not in 2008 and 2017, Madrid/Hamburg was not in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2012, and 2018.

@Hitman Given that on six of the nine occasions, he won all of Monte Carlo, Barcelona, and Roland Garros, and only one of Rome and Madrid/Hamburg, I think the lack of a week between the two must be a significant part of it. Roland Garros being best of five is also obviously relevant as to why he's tougher to beat there - and in recent years at least, deliberately peaking for Roland Garros, too. Early in his career, I think he played as hard as he could at all of the events. But starting in 2011 or 2012 and accelerating from 2014 and again from 2019, he's timed his efforts more.

Yes, because he would be feeling the wear and tear at that stage of the clay season. The matches do build up.

Tsisipas looked like he was about to legit cry after today's defeat.

He knows Nadal was playing some of his worse tennis since 2015, he HAS TO BE THINKING, "if I can't beat this guy in BO3 while he's playing like this? how am I gonna beat him at RG or down the road as his form improves?".

I am going to make a bold claim and say that the Greek philosopher will fade away for the rest of the clay season. He may reach one or 2 more QFs, but that's as far as he'll go.

Nadal didn't play bad. There's room for improvement, but it's not like he's playing like in the 2019 clay season (before RG that is). I guess he was thinking he had a match ball and was playing good that point until he messed up.
