N. Davydenko v F. Mayer

Really weird. i didn't think he'd win the title and he had a tough draw, but still I saw him making quarters or semis. It's a real shame, cause Verdasco-Davy and Davy/Verdasco-Berdych would have been first week highlights.

Davy can play best of 5 but he's a scheduling nightmare.
Playing last week, he should have been resting and fine tuning his game.
Just let his head clear out for a week.
He doesn't properly prepare for slams, he has a heavy schedule all year, no one who wants to be in top shape for a slam would have that kind of schedule.
He can rest now I guess.

I hope he ends up in Rafa's side of the draw... oh wait.

Funny stuff aside, this isn't actually THAT big of a surprise. Mayer has quite a game on him when he decides to play and we all know the "Iron Man" is terrific only in three setters.

Yay, verdasco can make QF now :)

Stop with your biased Nadal non-sense.

Davydenko has 4 QF at the AO, 2 SF at the USO, 2 QF and 2 SF at the FO.

He's pretty good at 5 setters. Otherwise he wouldn't have such good statistics, where he was stopped 3 out of 4 times in the SFs by Federer.

He is also dubbed "king of the 250 events". Wonder why?

We've seen that he can take it to top players in three setters. He is a tough guy to play against regardless of surface(ok, he isn't on grass but he is very good on clay and HC), I mean in the past two years he has taken it to guys like Fed,Nadal,DelPo,Djokovic,Soderling in three setters and won.

Yes,Fed took him out in slams but the russian had leads on Fed in both RG 2007 and in AO 2006 and 2010. But he was also taken out by other guys such as haas, puerta, who admittedly were playing very well. Davy is known as the guy who can't perform very well at slams even if nobody wants him in their quarter. As I said, a very dangerous guy due to his ability to zone for short periods of time but he is also famed for not being able to close out matches, and that turned out to be a problem for him in slams.

I would be surprised if even 1 out of a 100 guys had davydenko exiting the 1st round in their brackets.

First round no, but the guy just got back from some bad injury on his wrist so a long run in AO looked unlikely to me. He got ulucky drawing Mayer, who can play ball, and who is in pretty good form right now.

If Mayer would have met the davydenko of late 2009 he would have been blown away.

Lol what is this nonsensical hatred of Davydenko?

Davydenko has done fine at slams, he has been stopped by Federer nearly EVERY time he has made a deep run at a slam.

1 FO SF, 2 AO QF, 2 USO SF.

The reason why he is dubbed as the king of 250 events is because he can't beat top name players later in the round, not because he sucks at slams and masters. He generally plays to his seeding in nearly every tournament unless it is grass. The only reason why you are even doing this biased ass analysis of Davydenko is because he pretty much has owned Nadal for the past two years.

Even bolo who is a huge Nadal fan disagrees with your analysis of Davydenko. Davydenko rarely goes out early, and if he does it's usually because he's playing a pretty good player / inform and dangerous player.

Must be, that's why namelessone hates him so much. Probably because Davydenko stole some of his treasure.

Davydenko has very few big wins at the slams, the reason 06-07 he got to the semis was because he was a top 4 player and didn't play anyone of note till he meet Federer in the semis. Heck even players like Tsonga, Verdasco, Baghdatis have bigger scalps at slams than Davydenko.

He lost 2 of the first 3 sets, so he would have lost the match anyway if it had been a 3 setter. Davydenko is just a loser. He beat a sick Nadal this year and got a fluky victory last year against him and all of a sudden people think he can handle Nadal hahaha.

Bingo, you just pointed out why I said that he has no big impact in slams, not cause I "hate" davydenko. Go through my post history and find out one post where I discredit davydenko. He can't beat top players in slams whereas he has the ability to beat them in small events. Yeah, I know Fed stopped him a couple of times. But the point remains, he has pushed Fed or beaten him in three setters. He has had set leads on Fed in slams. He has lost a few good opportunities in slams to guys like puerta, roddick, haas.

We are talking about a guy that push or beat top players such as fed, nadal, delpo, djoker so we are not talking about a journeyman. Yet, as Cesc, pointed out, he does not even have a slam final to his name. This is a underachiever when you consider his skill level, even more when you consider that he is a veteran of the tour. I mean guys like tsonga and nalbandian have slam finals. Everybody knows Davydenko is a great player but most here will admit that they would not bet on him in a slam. That was my point.

Finally, as I've said, it's not a huge surprise due to the fact that Davy just came back from an injury on his wrist. I didn't expect first round exit but I knew he was vulnerable in early rounds.

Gotta go hate on davydenko some more. Good day.

That's the point; Davydenko doesn't suck in slams as namelessone said that, he just doesn't have the ability to beat the top level players (as in Federer or Nadal) in the later rounds of a slam in a best of five. But seriously, not many people can, so I don't see what the big deal is.

It's like he is only good at 250 events like Querrey is (or that's the way nameless one makes it out to be). Davydenko generally plays to his seeding nearly every tournament, just gets beat by the guys that are better then him, like Federer or Nadal.

LOLOLOLOL.

Puerta was doping and was playing extremely well on his best surface, Haas was the 12 seed on his best surface (who for a brief period was a top 10 player in 2006), and Roddick beat him because Davydenko had some problems with his breathing and had to retire, and Roddick is a better player than Davydenko anyways.

These guys all happened to play their best tennis when Davydenko made a big run. The rest of his deep runs were all stopped by Federer, who is a horrible match-up for Davydenko. It's not that Davydenko isn't good in slams, it's that he is just not as spectacular as people make him out to be.

Like every other player out there, Davydenko needs a good draw, and has to be having probably the best 2 weeks of his life to win slams. He is not Federer or Nadal where he can slip up a little or play horrible tennis and still win a slam (see Nadal FO 2006, Federer USO 2008 ). He plays a high risk game that requires virtually no error, so yes, he's going to not do as well in slams because it's harder to play Davydenko's type of game over 5 sets.

Roddick? Perhaps.

Look, much respect to Roddick for being in the top 10 for the last billion seasons and for his last push in WB 09' but in terms of overall ability I think Davydenko is the better player, he just can't close it out in slams. Roddick is very consistent but on the groundstroke level he has been getting progressively worse since 2003, especially on forehand. Roddick gets by on his serve, is strong and tall(1.88 m). Davy on the other hand is ball machine, taking it early and is 10 cm shorter, so he doesn't have the tall guy advantage so important in today's game(with the topspin game and big servers).

Sure, Roddick beats him when it comes to slams cause he has actually made some slam finals(made that final push) but as you have said, Roddick has done so when avoiding Roger, a Roger who would usually have Davydenko in his path in the very same tourney.

In the non-slam field, the difference is not that big.

Andy has 5 masters, Davy has 3.
Andy has no WTF(which some regard as highly as a slam), Davy has 1 and was runner up in another one.
Andy has been a top 10'er since forever, Davy has also hung around there for quite some time, even though he has had some injuries.

Both of these guys were owned by Fed when they met in slams but the difference is that Roddick took advantage of those QF/SF when he escaped Roger whereas Davy did not. But seriously, in terms of ability, Davydenko seems like the better player to me though I would not have said the same thing circa 2003/2004.

Roddick > Davydenko in ability. His serve alone overshadows Davydenko's groundstroke abilities by a mile. Davydenko is a good ball striker, but he can't put it away to get free points like Soderling or Del potro, thus he still has to work very hard to win points.

Over a span of 2 weeks Roddick's serve never drops in ability, meanwhile Davydenko's groundstroke abilities will drop at some point during those 2 weeks, because he plays too high risk of a game for a guy his size.

Why do you compare the non-slam field when being a better player includes doing good at slams? Davydenko has done well, but Roddick has done better. Why? Because Roddick has been the overall better player for quite some time now. Davydenko may hit better groundstrokes, but that doesn't matter when Roddick is serving 20+ aces a match.

Davydenko would of won the us open 03 with that ridiculous draw roddick had.
