Nadal #1 seed for US Open?????

With Federer's first round loss in Canada, what are Nadal's chances of being the #1 ranked player and top seed for the US Open???

The weeks are not lined up with last year's weeks, in terms of rankings and the 52 week system, but until the US Open, Federer has 850 points coming off his ranking and Rafa has 230. These points are from last years Canada and Cincy tournaments. Granted, there will be the Olympics this year, which will be "extra" points. Still, I don't see how Rafa won't narrowly become the world's number one player in time for the US open. thoughts?

I think it's unlikely but possible. Federer will remain number one after Toronto obviously. I think it will depend on what happens at the Olympics really. Let's see what Rafa can do in the next few days, for all we know he could lose to Andreev.

I shouldn't laugh but you're mighty right. With Verdasco, Gonzalez, Robredo, and Berdych already out as well as Rogi -- and all this rain -- it already feels like Bizarro World Rogers Cup. Like we're all going to wake up and none of it happened.

Because of his recent loss at Toronto, Roger Federer is no longer in a position to defend his number one ranking. If Nadal reaches the finals and at both Toronto and Cincinati, or wins Toronto and reaches at least the semis of Cincinati, he will gain the number 1 ranking.
Nadal current points 5830 | Points won last year at Cincy/Montreal 230
Both Finals
5600 + 350 + 350 = 6300
Win/Quarters
5600 + 500 + 225 =6325

Federer Current points 6600 | won at Cincy Montreal 850 | can get up to 505 points

Fed Max points (Win in Cincy) 5750 + 505 = 6255

Another way to look at it would be the following:
Federer's current ranking points without cincy and montreal from lasty year = 5750 + 5 for Toronto performance.

Nadals current ranking points without cincy and montreal from last year = 5600
if Nadal reaches the quarters he would have 5725 and with a semis appearance he would have 5825. Either of these situations would mean Cincinati would determine the number one ranking. The player that does better there gets the ranking. If nadal only reaches the quarters Federer holds the tiebreaker if they reach the same round and vice versa.

Another note if nadal reaches either the semis or quarters in Toronto, and Federer and Nadal both reach the finals of cincinati that would set up a clash for the number 1 ranking.

Yes, I have little doubt that Nadal will be the #1 seed at the USO.

No one outside of Andy Roddick and Roger Federer have been to both the finals and at least won one of the Master Shields in Canada and Cincinnati. Nadal still has stiff competition in Toronto, and if he does manage to win there, he would have to do it all over again at Cincinnati.

You're wrong about that. See my posts above...
