They haven’t referenced what they’re referring to, though. It looks like people on Twitter think this is just a general statement, not in response to the ATP/council thing. Maybe I’ve no idea what I’m saying. But it’s so general.

It’s not about being united or not. Djokovic and others are unhappy with the ATP as an organization and want to start an organization of their own. Ironically they want to form a union, because right now the players aren’t united as a whole and therefore don’t stand strong as a football club for example does.

So that’s why this “Professional Tennis Players Association” only includes the top 500 singles and top 200 doubles players and does not include the WTA? Remember it was Federer and Nadal that wanted one governing body for both men and women.

This has to be pure trollery since the statement omits one salient fact: Federer and Nadal are the two greatest tennis players who ever played the game. Federer is also far and away the most popular player there's ever been. Why should a player who has never won anything like Donald Young be treated as well by fans, media or the world as Roger or Rafa? They earned their adulation. If other players are "upset," let them win 19 and 20 slams, then they can ante up.

Is it me or is Djokovic getting a bit over confident thinking Federer may be done at slams and Nadal is not likely to play this season. Not sure he wants to poke the two bears. It is getting to the point where if he keeps poking them he will take pressure off both in respect of Slam race as they may take the view of stop djokovic rather than each other. Some of the comments both have made seem to suggest they are both quite relaxed where each other sits. Totally agree with your comments. Federer and Nadal, especially federer, have much more sway than Djokovic politically. Strange time for Djokovic to get into all this.

The original remark is the epitome of nonsense. If other players want higher pay, then earn it by winning events. Last time I checked, Fed managed to win 103 total titles, Nadal has won 85. Better treatment and higher pay always comes to the most successful people in their profession. Lower ranked players whining should choose a different line of work if they can't hang with it.

The issue is a bit more complicated since we are currently witnessing the effects of the ATP's lopsided pay structure in the current vacuum era. We wouldn't be seeing 2 mug generations in a row if, to young athletes, it appeared more realistic to make it in tennis compared to other sports.
Beyond that, I think Novak has a grievance with mens' events not paying more than womens' despite generating a lot more revenue.
Tennis players are paid a lower percentage of revenue than UFC fighters are, which is pretty sad.
You dont understand what is the issue here. Players demand bigger percentage of profits from ATP tournament, and rightfully so.Top players dont need it, but can show some solidarity and push Tiriac, Ellison and Co. to distribute more than 15% of revenues between players.

It is true that the better you are, the higher pay you'll get. Are you satisfied with the way money is divided between players currently? From what is often being said, it seems to me like if you're number 100 in tennis, you will struggle to get by, whereas if you're number 100 in sports like soccer or basketball you are basically a star player with much more than enough to get by. You can say that they are more popular sports but from what i've read, the players get around 15% to 20% of revenue depending on the tournament.

On the surface that's Federer — but knowing the passive aggressive humbalito, I suspect he is the one who is the real driving force of this alliance, because he's the one who is more involved in tour level tournament organizing. Federer is more on the exho beat — over there a player union is a non-issue.
But on the tour a player union is extremely relevant — for example at an ATP event in Manacor Majorca.
