Nadal, Federer and Tsonga

I think they are the only players to beat 3 of the Big 4 in the sam tournament.

Nadal won Hamburg 2008 beating Murray, Djokovic and Federer

Federer won WTF 2010 beating Murray, Djokovic and Nadal

Tsonga won Toronto 2014 beating Djokovic, Murray and Federer

I think these are the hardest fought titles in the Big 4 era.

You're a fool. Murray and Federer in Toronto were shadows of themselves.

In 2007 Nalbandian defeated Djokovic, Nadal and Federer in Madrid, so I would say that this is the most impresive title.

As for Tsonga title, Djokovic obviosly didnt show nothing and for me he clearly tanked the tournament while Murray and Federer were very far from their actual top 4 status in 2009-2012. On paper this is an impresive title but in reality not so much.

Mike, you really jumped very high on Tsonga bandwagon.

Next you will start claiming that peak Tsonga at AO 08 is the highest level in tennis history. Even above Safin.

Agreed.

I still find it laughable when people call Murray part of the big 4 this year.

He hasn't beaten a top 10 player in almost a year, is not in the top 10 anymore, and generally struggles to win matches.

^^ And yet, iirc, Murray was the only one who managed to take a set off Tsonga all week. The top guys always seem to find a way to beat players outside the top 10, and beating Djoko is no ordinary task - just see how hard Monfils tried and still came up short. Fed is still very hungry for titles after his recent drought of big titles, and look at how hard he tried and how much effort he gave in this match.
Just the fact that he beat Djoko, Murray, Baby Fed and Fed himself in a M1000 has to make this title one of the very best.

I watched the match, did you?

Not saying Federer did not put effort into it

BUT

Federer played like utter garbage. Fed did nothing that forced Tsonga to "take" the match. Fed was spraying forehand and backhand errors all over the court and many of them were not even forced.

I saw the match too. It was combination of both. Fed wasn't at the top of his game, but also Tsonga was brilliant.

I think Fed failed mentally. Maybe he still isn't over W final or the fact he lost tons of close finals this year.

It looks tough on paper, but the truth is Tsonga lucked out last week. Tsonga has been garbage all year, he just managed to hold it together while everyone else was off their games. Murray is done (for now) so winning that one was about as difficult as beating someone like Robredo, and Murray came close to winning.

Something was wrong with Novak last week too - he barely got back Monfils and he should be beating that clown in his sleep.

I guess we'll find out by seeing what Tsonga does for the rest of this year but I would say he'll revert to his crappy play from earlier in the year.

I'll give you the Djokovic match but Murray played good, he played just 2 bad games in the match, 1 in the second set and 1 in the third.

Yes Federer obviously played bad in the second set, but in the first Federer was playing "decent" (obviously not his best). Nalbandian's run was more impressive, but what Tsonga did was awesome because he beat 2 of his worst match ups (Djokovic and Murray), whereas Nalbandian beat Nadal and Federer, 2 good match ups for him.

Young baby Djokovic beat #3 Roddick, #2 Nadal and #1 Federer to claim 2007 Roger's cup. More difficult.

Also many other titles Djokovic won during "big 4 era" were much harder and more difficult than those you mentioned here.

Tsonga played well, and deserved the win. It was a tough draw, and even though his opponents were not in 'grand slam' shape, his victories were impressive.

It's definitely not up there, with the greatest wins of all time, but give the man some credit. He played an excellent tournament.

He most certainly did not fail mentally. Failing mentally would have been to give in on any of the 5(?) BP's he saved in the 2nd set. He played very clutch on those and made the score a whole lot closer than it should have been given his level of play - his timing was off, he was late and he was very poor in his ground game, awesome at the net and decent on serve.

But of course.
Any title Djoko wins = one of the most difficult to win of all time. Right?

Good point on Tsonga turning some corners with two very bad match-ups. Nalby takes the price for me though as he beat Fedal two tournaments in a row and added Djoko to the mix in one of them.
Fed's WTF in 2010 is mightely impressive as well.

And let's not forget Tsonga also beat Dimi here, 4 top players - that doesn't happen that often (last time 7 or 12 years ago according to different commentators).
