Nadal makes history again

Nadal was on crutches on the 7th November 2018 after major surgery to his ankle. To be in a Major final that soon after surgery must be a record, has it ever been done before? Soccer players after surgery don’t even play for three months.

Now the dust has settled Nadal making the final of the AO maybe his greatest ever achievement in a career of unparalleled success. It is inspiring to anyone going in for surgery...and for Andy Murray.

I know Fed was on crutches soon before playing the WTF in 2005. That the final went 5 sets is kind of a testament to what a loser Nalbandian was between the ears (save for those 2 weeks in 2007, obviously)

I expected to read something like "Nadal surpassed Lendl in number of defeats suffered at one Grand Slam's finals" ...

Ok dude, I already tried to correct you in another thread, but maybe you didn't notice. Nadal's ankle surgery was NOT major. It was a 35 minute, minimally invasive, arthroscopic surgery. Average recovery time from that kind of procedure is 6 weeks. Please don't spread false information.

Nadal needs to have that surgery again before the US Open ‘cause that was one of his best hard court slams ever!

I don't doubt Nadal's goes through certain physical struggles more than most, however the convenient timing of bringing up his surgery is really amusing. We all saw how many of his fans were confident and even cocky prior to the final, with no surgery talk to be heard. Now that the tournament ended the way it did, his run to the final was history making because of that. Forgive me for not approving that...

Well, so what?
Its not strange to get exited that he reached a final. But Rafa is human and not a machine, even us fans can forget that now and then.

You would have done the EXACT same thing. All fangroups are doing it. Its just because of your bias you only notice it w Nadal.

I rewatched the match twice. When i watched it live i was of the mind that it was a combo of nadal not playing great and djokovic on fire. However after watching it again djokovic was just unplayable. Nadal got blitzed. There was no other outcome on these courts. It is djokovics house. Also watching it live i thought nadal did not try and gave up. He did not. Djokovic suffocated him with depth shot making consistency. FULL CREDIT TO NOVAK DJOKOVIC THE AO KING. fini.

So the fans just happened to forget Nadal had an actual surgery two months ago while he was destroying his opponents, and claimed that he hasn't been this great on hard courts in 5-6 years, but that surgery suddenly came back to them right after he lost the final? Everyone should have realized he had a cupcake draw. I said cockiness tends to backfire before it happened. Lesson learned.

I can be harsh with the low rating of my favorite if he loses, that's pretty common among all fanbases. But I certainly wouldn't seek moral wins like this, which seems pretty exclusive for VamosBrigade. Saying that Nadal reaching this AO final may be his greatest ever achievement doesn't deserve serious responses.

Well, who is seeking moral wins? No one.

Are we not allowed to talk about his surgery and the after math? Its you that are drawing in between the lines.

Yeah, I agree. It does seem strange that people who were borderline arrogant in claiming their favourite would win, would suddenly pop up with posts about an injury right after the loss (when there had barely been any mention of an injury prior to the final.)

Accept the defeat and congratulate the winner. There were no mitigating conditions. Djokovic son fair and square against a rested and healthy Nadal. The manner of the defeat shouldn't impel bemused fans of the latter to start rationalizing the defeat claimijng that their favourite was in a debilitating state.

I realize that his fans think that he is the most injured player on tour and anything he goes through, is the worst thing ever, but I truly don't think what andy is going through is at all comparable. Just because rafa was seen on crutches doesn't mean it was a major surgery.

The jealousy of what Nadal achieved is unbelievable. Facts are he had surgery, major surgery, 2 months ago. Took Djokovic 5 months from less serious procedure to get to where Nadal is.

Anyone who thinks it is not significant that Nadal had no practice or warm up event is clearly worried about what Nadal will be achieving when he is fully fit. I repeat, it took Djokovic 5 months to be where Nadal is.

So Nadal fans are rightly **** a hoop right now. I didn’t even expect him to play in Australia let alone make the final.

It was major open surgery that usually requires 2 months on crutches. He wa on them for 6 weeks but still had no business even playing thisnsoon let alone making the final of a major. Without question this was Nadal best ever achievement . Super human effort.

If he is this good now who will even get a set off him on clay? I genuinely can’t see him losing a set on clay this season or losing on American hard courts. Unless injury strikes. He looks ominously good.

Nadal "making history" for finishing as AO runner-up sounds exactly like one of those to me.

Of course you are allowed. :D But his surgery wasn't concerning to any of you before he lost, it was a non-discussion. The guy was good to go and compete with the tournament's best player... Until he wasn't.

yeah I stopped paying attention after that, I'm not here for this narrative of elevating rafa more than needed when it comes to his body. he is oddly superhuman, ye also has the most damaged body ever.

Surgery is a fact. It may annoy non Nadal fans but it is a reality Nadal is ahead of where Djokovic was after his surgery and Nadals was a weight bearing joint. If Nadal is this good with no training and warm up events obviously he is going to be a lot better, and his best slams are still to come at Us Open and French open. I fail to see the controversy here. Or are people in denial that Nadal may have a repeat of 2010?

Till SF it was all about how good Nadal is playing, how his current h2h against Novak on HC doesn't matter, how even on indoor grass he gave Novak a tough fight, how he is more rested this time and blah blah blah. One Novak mops him up in the final here comes the threads on injury, surgery and how great is Nadal. Pathetic fanbase

A fact that you didn't even care about until he was beaten badly in the final. Now you bring it up, blow it out of proportion, and make up the "Nadal recovered quicker than Djokovic" achievement. I am sure all those Rafa's Slams pale in comparison to this.

As for the bold part, I'm afraid you are the one who is in denial there. :giggle:

Having proved that Nadal is ahead of where Novak was after his surgery can you get your great mind at work and extrapolate to tell when Nadal will stop handing his backside to Novak?

My goodness, I don't know if you're deliberately ignoring my posts. For the third time.. it was not a major surgery. It was a quick and minimally invasive procedure. Most people return to desk jobs after less than a week. Most can return to sports after 4-6 weeks. Please stop ignoring the facts and lionizing Nadal under false pretenses.

The afflicted careers of past champions like Hewitt, Safin, Del Potro and now Murray attest to the fact that it is highly questionable that Nadal has been both as blighted as he is claimed to be AND so consistently resurgent. Repeated, almost cyclical sabbaticals followed by miraculous resurgences is certainly indicative of something though.

I watched it carefully the next day, because I got really tired and saw the result before the end. Novak was indeed unstoppable, but Nadal missed all sorts of shots he normally makes. He is usually stead as a rock at the net but this time was missing net shots he normally makes, missing the lines on big forhands and some big backhands.

I think I'm pretty fair. It was an amazing day for Djokovic, and I believe he would have beaten anyone in the world in that final. But no way was Nadal anywhere near his best for whatever reasons. The whole tournament was odd to me. Fed is at 14% of return games, and usually stats are pretty high in majors because of easier matches in the first week. That's not even Raonic's normal level. Yet Novak won nearly 40% of his return games, and if he could continue that he would be nearly at 2011 level. I think we all need to see more HC play in 2019 before making too many assumptions.
