I know what you mean, every year I think "next year will be too late" and he keeps going. When he lost at Wimby 17 to Muller, I didn't expect him to have a better Wimby in 18. When he lost in 18, I didn't expect him to be right there again in the semi. When he lost to Delpo injured at the USO last year, I didn't expect him to be in the finals here now o_O he just keeps putting himself in position, it's crazy.

Heck, I feared he was done because of the injuries back in 2009 and again in 2012. I would have never guessed that in 2019 he’d have won 5 majors after 30.

Man I was at work today just browsing the crap out of my phone and the media was LITTERED with RAFA, above the norm situation it's crazy.

Anyway I was so happy it was a 5 set win. I know a lot of my fellow Rafa fans love demolitions and I like em too from time to time when he's absolutely beasting but for me Rafa + 5 set matches is bread and butter. Wins or losses majority of the greatest matches in the last 15 years have involved Rafa because he brings it the only way he can. Rome 2006, Wimbledon 2008, AO 2009, AO 2012, RG 2013, AO 2017, Wimby 2018, these matches are stuck with you forever and have been referenced so many times like the back of your hand and now USO 2019's been added to the list.

I was rooting for a 5th set thriller last night like the good ol' times and he gave it to us and the USO, which needed a 5 set classic in a final for like years.

It's not just about titles for a lot of these people, it's the experience and emotions you feel from a match that stick with you the most and Rafa's done it, once again.

Wow! Now I hope Rafa plays Bercy and wtf, just to get that record.

I hope him to rearrange his schedule, play Bercy, WFT and practice with high intensity to reach his peak at AU open 2020. After AU open 2020, he can rest about 2 months and skip all tournaments from Feb to Mar to recover. After that he can start preparing for clay swing.

Agree in a way. Sad rafa had to suffer through that physically when he just had to consolidate the break in the 3rd to win it in 3 sets most likely but ut made it much more memorable and stressful going 5!!! I'll remember this a lot more than the anderson beat down in 2017.

Since Madrid Masters Nadal only lost once to Fed this summer.

In Madrid he lost to Tsitsipas which marked his first season since 2004 without winning a single tournament in a year until then. Since this loss his results have been:

Rome - W (def. Djokovic)
RG - W (def. Thiem)
Wimbledon - SFs (only loss this Summer to Federer)
Toronto - W (def. Medvedev)
USO - W (def. Medvedev)

Quite impressive!
Vamos!!!

A tough 5 set win is definitely more satisfying and memorable than a 3 set blowout. If Rafa had won it in 3, which he should have, it would not have felt so epic. But I never wish for a 5 set thriller before the match. These matches take a toll on his body. Rafa was hobbling after the trophy presentation. A match like this on hard court can take him out for months.

Very well said. 100% agree with what you said about 5 set thrillers. I did have my doubts about his physicality now in longer matches, in all honesty, given the beating his body has taken over time and obviously as he ages, but goddamit this is Rafa we're talking about! That grit, that fight and that never-say-die attitude is what we all live for. Can always expect him to shine in five setters.

I think he will retire in RG 2022 with 36 years old.

What do you think?

Any single additional non-clay slam will be epic. AO = double slam, W = three slams on every surface and 3x3, USO = ties open era record with 5.

I'd love to see him get an AO after all the bad luck he's had there with not only injuries but he's lost two 5 setters there being up a break in the 5th and pulled his back in warmups when he lost to stan. in a perfect world he would get 20 at 2020 AO and then 21 at RG.

wimbledon would of course be sweet but will be very hard. and of course another US would be nice too.

anything at this stage of his career is going to be hard to win with his age and some younger guys like med stepping up and of course djoker and roger still around too.

happy with 19 now! i hope 20 comes and I think he will have extra hunger being 1 away!!!

The New Yorker

"The match should figure, too, in the ongoing evaluation and reëvaluation of Nadal. This marked his nineteenth grand-slam title, just one shy of Roger Federer’s record twenty. Nadal is five years younger than Federer, and, late in every spring, there is always Paris—the French Open—where he simply wins and wins. He is the king of clay; he also deserves to be considered one of the greatest hard-court players of all time. Sunday’s win marks his fourth U.S. Open championship, tying him with John McEnroe. Only Pete Sampras and Federer, with five, have won more since the tournament moved to Flushing, and onto hard courts, in 1978. Nadal has also won the Australian Open, beating Federer to do so; the championship at Indian Wells, three times; and the Roger’s Cup, in Canada, five times—all on hard surfaces. At the U.S. Open, he has beaten Novak Djokovic, the greatest hard-court player of this era, twice. Nadal has often complained that hard courts have hobbled his knees, that too many tournaments are played on the surface. But what he’s mostly done on hard courts is conquer what daunts him, by fighting the kinds of relentless battles that he relishes, as he did against a rising hard-court comer on Sunday."

I am surprised by two things: that Rafa isn't #1 since he has had a slightly better year overall than Novak; and Kei Nishikori is #8. Interesting that the five players that made it into Grand Slam finals comprise the top 5!

Since Rafa isn't defending any points I assume he can potentially end the year with the #1 ranking?

A player’s ranking is determined by his best 18 tournament results over the preceding 52 weeks.

Rafa is #1 in the Race. The Race includes only points earned after last year's ATP Finals.

There are still quite a few points to be had till the end of the year including 1,500 WTF points. I think Rafa has said he only plans to play 1 tournament plus the WTF and Laver Cup. So either of them could still be #1 at YE.

This is the race table:

Djokovic would be a bit crazy to chase the year-end-#1, given his shoulder concerns and how valuable the AO is to him, surely Rafa has his FIFTH year-end-#1 in the bag :)
And only an injured Rafa would fail to reach the semis of London.

Carlos Moya reveals what happened to Rafael Nadal after the US Open final

Less than five hours after a gruelling 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 win against Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final, Rafael Nadal was so physically exhausted that he even was cramping up in the locker room. Speaking to Spanish radio station SER, his coach Carlos Moya said:

In the toughest moments you try to cheer him up, you make him see that the opponent is also tired even if you make it up (laughs).
You try to hold his head, it was an incredible mental battle, it reminded me of a boxing match.
After the game, they gave him cramps in the locker room, he couldn’t even wear jeans, I had to help him. He was dead.
Moya thinks that our champ still has his best years ahead of him:

I believe that Rafa Nadal has not reached the ceiling, there have been timely tournaments and matches in which he has played at his highest level.
But there is still room for improvement and to be more regular. We will continue working on it, so no one doubts.

Shocking to hear him say it hurt Rafa to put jeans on but im not surprised. My boy was DEAD after the middle of the 4th set. You could see it.

It's a near miracle that he was able to get over the line. On top of that he had to worry about losing his first serve for the sake of a few seconds. The people who make these rules along with the commentators who campaigned for enforcing the TV never even got past the 2nd round, at best, if they played professional tennis at all.

They were both exhausted and the crowd got their money's worth.

I think that's also the main reason why he was so emotional when he was sitting in his chair.
That quite usually happens to people who have gone extremely deep physically. See for example ultrarunners who frequently cry randomly after races despite (or because) being superhappy.

It's funny how Nadal misinterprets the word 'couple'.

After having listened countless of Rafa's interviews and press bites, i don't know whether all of you have noticed that he always uses the word 'couple' to mean 'a few' rather than the actual meaning which is 'two'.

Latest case in point being, "Medvedev for sure has a good future ahead, and I'm sure he gonna win a couple of slams". A few years ago i remember him saying he hopes to be back to RG for a couple of years more. This is kind of funny, because for his haters, just know that in future if Rafa says "I am gonna play for a couple more years", he actually means he is going to play for many more years, instead of retiring after 2 more years. :-D:-D

Yeah, I sometimes hear some even native English speakers use it this way. I catch myself doing it from time to time. The way people use it, it seems synonymous with “few” although “two” is the actual meaning.

It’s kind of like how you can greet “Hi. How are you?” and then people just reply back “How are you?” without actually answering how they are lol.

After his speech he grimaced when he sat back in his seat, so I’m not surprised to read that. He did look exhausted at the fourth but I think he got a second wind in the fifth. I really wish he didn’t brick those put-away volleys when up a break in the third. It’s a big relief that he got past the finish line and didn’t get broken again at 5-4 in the fifth.

Hi everyone, I’m new to the forum. I discovered Rafa just 3 years ago when I started playing tennis in my late 20s, but I’ve immersed myself in the history of his career that I feel as if I’ve been following him forever. This USO final gave me a mini heart attack, but I gained tremendous amount of respect for our boy, what an incredible will and fight.

So he might still play Shanghai. Good. As long as he's healthy.
I don't think he will, he has to prepare for the wedding too, Carlos Moya said that his immediate schedule was Laver Cup and then there is wedding, https://www.**************.org/tenn...-to-play-laver-cup-then-he-has-wedding-coach/

He should only play Bercy and win the WTF in London.
Joker is done this season.
Nadal will end the season as number 1 for the fifth time, equalling Connors, Federer and Djokovic.

Rest and prepare to win his second Australian Open.
Djokovic, even if he is somehow play there, he will not be 100% recuperated and Federer is too old now to endure the rigor of a Grand Slam tournament.
