I know what you mean, every year I think "next year will be too late" and he keeps going. When he lost at Wimby 17 to Muller, I didn't expect him to have a better Wimby in 18. When he lost in 18, I didn't expect him to be right there again in the semi. When he lost to Delpo injured at the USO last year, I didn't expect him to be in the finals here now he just keeps putting himself in position, it's crazy.

Heck, I feared he was done because of the injuries back in 2009 and again in 2012. I would have never guessed that in 2019 he’d have won 5 majors after 30.

I hope him to rearrange his schedule, play Bercy, WFT and practice with high intensity to reach his peak at AU open 2020. After AU open 2020, he can rest about 2 months and skip all tournaments from Feb to Mar to recover. After that he can start preparing for clay swing.

Agree in a way. Sad rafa had to suffer through that physically when he just had to consolidate the break in the 3rd to win it in 3 sets most likely but ut made it much more memorable and stressful going 5!!! I'll remember this a lot more than the anderson beat down in 2017.

A tough 5 set win is definitely more satisfying and memorable than a 3 set blowout. If Rafa had won it in 3, which he should have, it would not have felt so epic. But I never wish for a 5 set thriller before the match. These matches take a toll on his body. Rafa was hobbling after the trophy presentation. A match like this on hard court can take him out for months.

Very well said. 100% agree with what you said about 5 set thrillers. I did have my doubts about his physicality now in longer matches, in all honesty, given the beating his body has taken over time and obviously as he ages, but goddamit this is Rafa we're talking about! That grit, that fight and that never-say-die attitude is what we all live for. Can always expect him to shine in five setters.

I'd love to see him get an AO after all the bad luck he's had there with not only injuries but he's lost two 5 setters there being up a break in the 5th and pulled his back in warmups when he lost to stan. in a perfect world he would get 20 at 2020 AO and then 21 at RG.

wimbledon would of course be sweet but will be very hard. and of course another US would be nice too.

anything at this stage of his career is going to be hard to win with his age and some younger guys like med stepping up and of course djoker and roger still around too.

Rafa is #1 in the Race. The Race includes only points earned after last year's ATP Finals.

There are still quite a few points to be had till the end of the year including 1,500 WTF points. I think Rafa has said he only plans to play 1 tournament plus the WTF and Laver Cup. So either of them could still be #1 at YE.

People underrate how taxing that Berretini match was. I knew he had to do it quick in the final, so as the hours rolled by and you could see he was so gassed, I was nervous af lol

It's a near miracle that he was able to get over the line. On top of that he had to worry about losing his first serve for the sake of a few seconds. The people who make these rules along with the commentators who campaigned for enforcing the TV never even got past the 2nd round, at best, if they played professional tennis at all.

They were both exhausted and the crowd got their money's worth.

I think that's also the main reason why he was so emotional when he was sitting in his chair.
That quite usually happens to people who have gone extremely deep physically. See for example ultrarunners who frequently cry randomly after races despite (or because) being superhappy.

Latest case in point being, "Medvedev for sure has a good future ahead, and I'm sure he gonna win a couple of slams". A few years ago i remember him saying he hopes to be back to RG for a couple of years more. Yeah, I sometimes hear some even native English speakers use it this way. I catch myself doing it from time to time. The way people use it, it seems synonymous with “few” although “two” is the actual meaning.

It’s kind of like how you can greet “Hi. How are you?” and then people just reply back “How are you?” without actually answering how they are lol.

After his speech he grimaced when he sat back in his seat, so I’m not surprised to read that. He did look exhausted at the fourth but I think he got a second wind in the fifth. I really wish he didn’t brick those put-away volleys when up a break in the third. It’s a big relief that he got past the finish line and didn’t get broken again at 5-4 in the fifth.
