Federer is not playing Brisbane, he’s playing the Hopman Cup. Federer did everything he could to keep from taking over the no. 1 ranking and you guys are still find ways for him to be no. 1.
With any luck he comes to his senses and plays Brisbane. I wonder about Fed sometimes - his scheduling needs work, even if it's improved the last year or two.

A genuine shot at oldest #1 and he'll let it slip to mess around with Hingis and Pat Rafter or something in Perth?
Lame, Roger. Lame. He's going senile if he wins this undefeated and doesn't play Brisbane.

Uggh, but the Hopman cup doesn't give him points right? This is a glorified Exo.

Is that at the same time or could he play that and Brisbane.

This could be Fed's best/last chance.

If doesn't win AO, Miami and Indian Wells then Nadal is likely to gain ground before the clay court season (Dubai not withstanding)
hopman >>>> brisbane

Fed shouldn't play Brisbane just to get #1 for 2 weeks and risk losing it at AO. Are some of you insane? Roger will only have to finish better than Nadal there and frankly I don't expect much from him there. Certainly not a final again.

No. He has to finish better by a margin that covers the 800 pt difference between a F and a W.

So for example, even if Federer made the SF of the upcoming AO and Nadal lost in the 1st RD, Federer would still lose more points than Nadal since a SF is only 720 points in a slam.

That's a loss of 1280 points for Federer and only 1200 (or I believe 1190) for Nadal. So Nadal would still be #1 after the AO.

The physical toll and the amount of the tournaments needed to maintain the no. 1 that’s what my statements means. Federer doesn’t want to play that many tournaments. No clay and no. 1 ranking.
Yeah but he can likely play a crummy 250 in Queensland and get it despite being semi-retired. That's how good his results per tournament have been.
He'd be mad not to go for it.

I know - but he doesn't need to play Brisbane to get #1 back in January. Anyway, it seems clear that he's not that bothered about #1 at this stage.

actually its not that he's not bothered about #1.
He did seriously want it after Wimbledon this year and he stated so, but the back injury ruined his chances and he didn't want to risk his body further by going after it -- when it was a long shot.

If he wins the YEC undefeated, he'll be only 140 points behind Nadal.
I don't see a real good reason to play Hopman Cup instead of Brisbane in that scenario, when he can get to #1.

Wise decision. Two majors and the year-end #1. That's what it's all about.

Still hasn't patched the gaping hole in his resume.

Only 1-10?

Should be 1-32 at least. I feel like if you are good enough to be seeded in the Slams, you should not be playing Challengers...

He'd look like he was going all out for the number one which he would and I doubt Federer will do this. He could have played Paris and got a chance of it but he didn't, he's got more weeks at number one than anyone. I believe Federer will always look at number one as a by product of winning events and that is his main focus. He doesn't want brisbane, he just wants a warm up for the AO. Nadal has killed his knees to get number one, I don't expect Federer to alter his schedule or play when not fit to do that

well, he'd already played Shanghai and Basel and had to focus on the YEC coming up as well. That's why he skipped Paris.

As a Federer fan, I'm pissed off. It's obvious he started quiting from Paris and then London with little pain and when #1 is secured.
If Federer had played in Paris, Nadal would have gone all the way in both tournaments.

Fed should have made an appearance in Paris to keep the pressure on.

And next year Fed need to win the Australian again and Nadal doesn't reach the final to be #1. A tall order.

It's a shame if Fed doesn't get to #1 after a season like this.

I just think if he's signed up for hopman cup, he'll play it. Maybe if he feels in good shape he'll play another event as well but I doubt it.

Yes his presser was just on Sky

"Merry Xmas everyone and see you next year" lol
That was the line that Nadal was a bit naughty. He just left it as a marker he doesn't actually care about Wtf and the sour faces of the journalists showed they realised Nadal was taking the proverbial.

I predicted Nadal would do exactly as he has done almost to the minute. He will be fresh as a daisy come AO and likely win there with confidence of USO under his belt.

As a Federer fan I am completely satisfied with the fact that within a single year Federer has reduced Nadal to his deserved position and made him run away from a fight.

A thing that was unthinkable in the minds of many people at the beginning of this year.

Merry early Christmas to everyone!

I agree with all above but getting the #1 would have made it complete. There's always next year. But Fed had to win Australia and maybe Dubai to clinch it back

Federer can do it, if he really wants it.

Apparently it is not his priority any more and he has built a comfortable lead in that category to not be bothered to pay attention.

Federer's year has been out of this world and the only mentioning in relation to Nadal should be the that he utterly destroyed the myths about the spaniard.

Your fandom is BS because otherwise you would have known that Federer was playing with Bencic at the Hopman Cup. Hingis is not the only Swiss female player. I don’t care what you made on the forum, that doesn’t mean you’re not full of ****. Most of the “fans” talk out their ***, so don’t tell me to Chill and I am not your Dude.

Nadal was always going to pull out. I think I posted he would a few days back.

Nadal really has little interest in wtf. He will say all the right things but his cheeky merry Christmas at end of pressed was a clue to his real feelings. He got YE1, satisfied the sponsors by turning up, now can have a nice holiday. Well deserved for the years best player.

Well he didn’t participate the other 5 times he qualified so why not a 6th time. Rafa did it for the alternates those years, and this year, PCB is grateful.

Despite of Nadal's YE #1 Federer has more weeks as #1 and more YE #1, so you are a little confused as far as your statements are concerned.

Federer missed the clay season due to his age and wear and tear.

Nadal started and left two consecutive tournaments with no viable explanation.

He doesn't have an injury and hasn't played that many matches.

You fail.

I'm comfortable with Nadal leading on points. He played a full calendar and many more events than Fed. He deserves it.

It's titles I care about. Fed has a gritty AO win (over Nadal no less), the big trophy (Wimbledon), and some nice Masters wins including the difficult IW-Miami double. And that's not even mentioning a possible WTF win.

He also (likely) finishes the year in great form and shape, having not ruined his body playing everything under the sun. I'm happy. :);)

Why did he play???

He already had #1.

He could have given someone else a chance to do well and have a great experience.

Seems lame to me. Uncool Bull.

If he were deciding now, sure. But he has promised to play the Hopman cup and may regard keeping a promise as a good reason. Besides, if he enters Brisbane, nothing is stopping Nadal from entering Doha. And many regard year-end #1 as more important than #1 on January 8th. I am one of that multitude. No idea whether Federer is but it is a distinct possibility.

You don't sound it as you keep, posting on here on Nadal threads . After USO I haven't seen a happy Federer fan on other forums and it's the same here. The USO and FO were really hard to bear I think for some for different reasons.

to satisfy corporate sponsors as world no.1 . Nadal hinted his year was done after USO.

Great. That's awesome.

Well that make me really admire his decisions now.

In that light Fed pulling out of the whole clay season and not "pretending" to be competitive looks downright grown up.

I'm just not totally mental :D:D

Quit making octomom look good lol. Take a leaf out of Roger's book and keep it classy. He would be ashamed of some folks if he read this forum.
