(Télam) .- The Cordoba David Nalbandian returned today to step on a tennis court, which made light movements for 23 minutes, after having hip surgery last May 13.

"He left everything as expected. Back on the pitch is not something minor and luckily I did not feel any discomfort," said Nalbandian, who now rally for 23 minutes with coach Luis Lobo in the fields of Vilas Club.

Nalbandian had surgery last May 13 at the hip, specifically the breaking of the labrum, a cartilage whose function is to cushion the movement of the femur, but that being deteriorated generates a joint wear and numbness, followed by intense pain in the area.

"I do not want to rush back for anything in my circuit. The plan is to do things like say the protocol and when ready boot. The idea is to start in the Australia Open in January next year," said unquillense.

"Obviously if I can play it before I do, as for example in the Copa Argentina-an exhibition tournament that is played in Buenos Aires in December, but today I can not say anything," he said.

"Everything will be watching on the go. In Australia, the games are to five sets and hot to play the tournament and I have to feel really good," he said.

Nalbandian held today 23 minutes of intense rally with his coach but hardly moved by the court because they created with their team.

"All this week I do 20 minutes on the court, which is 30 and the third and I'm going to stretch to make 50 minutes, provided you do not receive any pain," said the tennis player, who was closely followed by around 20 onlookers were in the Vilas Club.

The Cordoba left the court with a broad smile and a great gesture of satisfaction. With regard to the work plan, Nalbandian said in the fourth week the goal is to get moving on the court and that in a month and a half is estimated to be training full '.

"If everything works out as we hope, within three weeks I'll be moving on the court and the idea is that in a month and a half is training with everything. But that is futurology. I have to go little by little" ended.

Ouch! It's painful to see him in such a shape.

He better work on his fitness or he won't make it back in the top 10.

Yeah i feel for him, hopefully he can get a good return on tour like Hewitt i believe their surgeries were similar.. seems people have already forgotten about Nalbs, all of the sudden the forum is on FED vs NAD mode right now, really sad to see so much ppl arguing about only two players.. anyways

Good luck Nalby in 2010! You'll always be by favorite player to watch, even if you go down as the biggest underachiever the sport has ever known.

Seriously worried about his fitness however.:-?

i Believe that is a custom butt-cap that he has installed from the pro-shop where he gets his sticks customized at..

Oh no. Why did Dave get a haircut?

I pray that Dancevic, Koellerer (even though I hate the guy) and Malisse (thank god he grew his hair back) to never ever get a haircut and sellout (like Federer and Nadal).

And yes he does look like he gained a few lbs.

Seriously, if you just saw that first picture and didn't know who it was you would think it's just some 40-something year old guy playing recreational doubles somewhere.

Obviously everyone figured he'd gain a few lbs with the time off; we'll see how he looks when he has to play for real in 2010.

yikes. get off the court, get to the sand hills and start running. HARD.

i love ya dave, good luck with your comeback, i just want to see you fulfil your potential, you have 2 years to win a slam realistically, make good use of them.

Fix up soon David, good to see him back on court, even if he is carrying a fair bit of weight.

Gradual rehab and then getting in shape and he'll be right up there again.

*goes to sleep*

He's gained some weight which is to be expected. There's still plenty of time though so hopefully he gets in shape for AO next year.

If David Nalbandian works hard in the forthcoming months he could be a real danger at the AO next year, especially if he won't be seeded. (or does he have a protected ranking that makes him a seed?)

Are you guys serious? This guy just came off a major hip surgery and you are saying the guy is fat and out of shape? How bout YOU get a major hip surgery and let's see what you look like?

I gained 14 kg after my last shoulder surgery (of course, I didn't stop eating at all, but couldn't move for 15 days nor exercise at all for 4 months). 14 kg are like 30 lbs. Of course, it was just by the time I was studying in Italy :p

Inactivity + A lot of pasta = Fat :)

Once I started the physio therapy, dropped 20 of those lbs in like a month or two. After 9 months of physio, I was fitter than ever.

Give the guy a break.

He might have? I thought if he's absent 6 months because of injury he gets it for sure.
I don't know, zagor. I'm not certain about the protected ranking rules. Somehow the words '6 months' and 'injury' rang a bell, but I cannot say for sure :)

Anyone kind enough to enlighten us? If no one posts in 5 mins, I'll google :p

Protected Ranking – a player injured for a minimum of six months can ask for a protected ranking, which will be based on his or her average ranking during the first three months of his or her injury. The player will be able to use his or her protected ranking to enter tournaments' main draws or qualifying competitions, when coming back from injury.

So if he asks for it, can it be declined? And his protected ranking will be either 14, 15 or 16. Good enough ;)
