Naomi Osaka claims she "loves the press" but says she felt pressured to disclose her mental health issues because people didn't believe her

"After taking the past few weeks to recharge and spend time with my loved ones, I have had the time to reflect, but also to look forward. I could not be more excited to play in Tokyo," Osaka said. "An Olympic Games itself is special, but to have the opportunity to play in front of the Japanese fans is a dream come true. I hope I can make them proud."

"This was never about the press, but rather the traditional format of the press conference," Osaka said. "I'll say it again for those at the back: I love the press; I do not love all press conferences."

"I have always enjoyed an amazing relationship with the media and have given numerous in-depth, one-on-one interviews... I always try to answer genuinely and from the heart," she added. "I've never been media-trained, so what you see is what you get. The way I see it, the reliance and respect from athlete to press is reciprocal."

"However, in my opinion (and I want to say that this is just my opinion and not that of every tennis player on tour), the press-conference format itself is out of date and in great need of a refresh," Osaka went on. "I believe that we can make it better, more interesting and more enjoyable for each side. Less subject vs. object; more peer to peer."

"Athletes are humans," Osaka said. "Tennis is our privileged profession, and of course there are commitments off the court that coincide. But I can’t imagine another profession where a consistent attendance record (I have missed one press conference in my seven years on tour) would be so harshly scrutinized."

"Perhaps we should give athletes the right to take a mental break from media scrutiny on a rare occasion without being subject to strict sanctions," she added. "In any other line of work, you would be forgiven for taking a personal day, so long as it’s not habitual. You wouldn’t have to divulge your most personal symptoms to your employer; there would likely be HR measures protecting at least some level of privacy."

"I felt under a great amount of pressure to disclose my symptoms -frankly because the press and the tournament did not believe me," the Japanese said. "I do not wish that on anyone and hope that we can enact measures to protect athletes, especially fragile ones. I also do not want to have to engage in a scrutiny of my personal medical history ever again. So I ask the press for some level of privacy and empathy next time we meet."

"There are too many to name, but I want to start with my family and friends, who have been amazing," she said. "There is nothing more important than those relationships. I also want to thank those in the public eye who have supported, encouraged and offered such kind words. Michelle Obama, Michael Phelps, Steph Curry, Novak Djokovic, Meghan Markle, to name a few.

"Furthermore, I am eternally grateful to all my partners. Although I am not surprised as I purposefully chose brand partners that are liberal, empathetic and progressive, I am still tremendously thankful.

"I feel uncomfortable being the spokesperson or face of athlete mental health as it’s still so new to me and I don’t have all the answers. I do hope that people can relate and understand it’s O.K. to not be O.K., and it’s O.K. to talk about it. There are people who can help, and there is usually light at the end of any tunnel. Michael Phelps told me that by speaking up I may have saved a life. If that’s true, then it was all worth it."

It's called withdrawing from a tournament or a few. You want to play tennis and not do media? Honestly she should be banned from tennis for 4 years. Once her sponsorship starts going towards single digit millions, she will realize it. Be harsh on these players, no special treatment for anyone

:-D:-D:-D - can we sum up Western civilization in 2021 with anything better than that?

Clearly an attention grab

She’s blatantly sniffing her own farts with the “liberal progressive partners” line.
What it really means is “I haven’t lost any sponsorship money, so I’m just going to take a vacation” - and I can’t blame her. She’s very marketable so likely got a stupid amount of money, being a Japanese athlete before Tokyo Olympics and winning 4 Slams.

I wonder if these contracts have any stipulations on Osaka actually playing any tennis. Seemingly not?

Oh har, har, har......whatever she'll keep changing the narrative to stay fresh and this is why she won't win more than 9 Slams.

Why do you people constantly post this kind of stuff?

You know that the subject matter is considered verboten (correctly, imho) by the TTW Stasi.

Seriously, what do you hope to achieve by posting this?

Not sure I follow the reasoning here.

If she wants things to change, why doesn't she get some of her fellow tennis pros on board? She seems to be fighting for all these issues on her own.

Shes never screamed liked a murderous maniac while smashing sticks, ripping towels
from ball kids and nailing people in the throat with the
ball in childish frustration resulting in disqualification
but she's the one with mental issues huh ..

I find the idea of a corporation being “liberal and progressive” to be a fundamentally flawed premise.

But what it means is, they can attempt to be portrayed this way, as progressive, via proxy: i.e. sponsoring the tennis-less wonder, the tennis star who refuses to actually play tennis.

got it - corporations are certainly not progressive. Liberal, maybe, depending on the brand of liberalism.

This is a lot of words for her to basically just confirm that she doesn't like being confronted with questions about why she played poorly when she loses, while still trying to frame it as a mental health issue.

In any other line of work if you need a personal day, you take the whole day off. You don't get to just come in and do the part of your job that you like. Does she think normal people can show up to the office, do some spreadsheeting in the morning but then take off before giving a presentation in the afternoon because that part gives them anxiety? Yeah, you better have an explanation. You can't just run to HR.

If I was having anxiety and depression issues, I would want to hide. No way I'd be doing a Time article continuing the controversy and the discussion over my refusal to do press...by doing press  Did she or did she not ask for privacy upon withdrawing from the French?

This is so perfectly timed to match with the Tokyo Olympics and her new clothing line. The words don't even sound like her own. Probably a team of 5 PR professionals, a psychologist on retainer and her agent, manager and sponsors had to sign off on what was said and contribute to a spun narrative.

The reason people get sponsorships and get to be spokespeople is being aspirational. You can still be aspirational and inspirational even with anxiety and depression. However, the difference being is public people say they have it and then show that they manage it, courage and coping IN SPITE of their flaws or mental difficulties not try to just be there for the accolades and skip out on stuff that is "hard".

Her instagram also would seem to show she doesn't mind at putting herself out there when it suits her. I totally agree with whoever said when did she do a 180 and become so annoying? I think it might have been when she wore the mask with various names of people who were killed by police so now she thinks she's a social justice warrior..that would give a person anxiety for real. Not making light of any of her mental health issues or causes she believes deeply in that are worthy, but it's tough being an expert and supposed role model for all these things when her real accomplishment is tennis. Stick to that and talking about that and it would make the interviews a little easier. And no Naomi, things do not need to change in post match press. The only part of that I could agree with is that it is dumb to keep having the same questions asked over and over in the same conference. But to be honest, it is pretty much the same with any celebrity or public figure. It really is the part of the reason these people make millions to put up with this type of stuff and you have to be cut out for it.

I have seen upclose what actual mental health issues feel like.

I know first hand what sheer depression and the never going away weight on your head feels like.

I am sorry, I hope Osaka is doing okay, but personally feels she is blowing this out of the water.

i noticed she made it to the ESPYs...no sign of the depression or anxiety that keeps her from talking to the press per her WTA obligations.

She did look really good hair, makeup, outfit. She is obviously going through some sort of personal growth in terms of trying to be markedly different to who she was. Nothing really wrong with that, however might be a little silly in the end to bite the hand that feeds her.
