No offense to Thiem but I see how bad...

Things will be without the big 3. That final set was so underwhelming. The skill level is a noticeable gap, and the shot selection on match points was ridiculous. Not to mention the double faults, not being able to hold serves and the fact these two were not moving at their best. However when times change we adapt, for better or for worse in tennis.

Had fun with the match. Despite the lackluster tennis, it was a real thrill. Plus, the match thread was great.

Yeah... both players were totally predictable in the 5th set. It was like they were just playing safe. I guess the pressure to win their first slam was a lot to handle. And that's not surprising. They'll take more chances in the future.

Hey, hopefully now he has the monkey off his back he'll never be this bad if he ever finds himself in a similar position again.

I saw Hewitt play a lot of 5 set matches and win or lose, never ever did he play a fifth set like those two mental midgets just did.

The tennis wasn't great but I did enjoy it still. Obviously not as much as I would have if Federer or another Big 3 was playing, but it was fun, due in a large part to the match thread and being able to share the experience with everyone else.

this chokefest was really entertaining, to witness 2 grand slam finalist play like 4.0 pushers was indeed hilarious

The match thread was awesome, so much hype and tension.

It's debatable. Hewitt was pretty much EPITOME of TRANSITION ERA.
After Federer started dominate he never defeat him in GS. Same with Nadal after 2005 AO.
Still better than any of the Next Gen today. Just unlucky he was finished as a top player after 2005 due to injury.

All these young players can play tennis at a championship level, but there seems to be a lack of mental toughness and belief that they are worthy to be Slam champions. Without the Big 3, I thought one of them would rise to the occasion, but today they both shrunk during the big moment when they were on the verge of victory. They kept waiting for the other guy to hand it to them and Zverev finally made the last UFE.

There are many Big3 finals where I thought no one deserved to lose.…today, I felt that no one deserved to win and didn’t particularly care who won even though I like Thiem best amongst the young guys.

He was a good ballstriker and good at the net.

Other than hitting very hard, in which other way is Thiem talented?
Fantastic backhand,very good flat forehand,solid server,fantastic footwork,decent smash,decent volleys. He's also fast.
Just my view.

The thing is, all those things mean nothing if he is playing like today...Not even 1 thing was working for 2.5 sets.

You just said nothing.
Thiem is the textbook brainless basher.
He couldn't even figure out to step in on zverevs 2nd serve meatballs after 5 sets of them. Fedr must've been sitting back laughing. Hewitt was an extremely rare winner type like nadal, with a strong tennis IQ

That's why tennis is mental sport.
You can say that for Federer as well. Easily most talented maestro to ever pick racquet, but if he is gonna play like from 8-7,40:15 to 8-8 his talent is waste.
It's not like that. Atleast Thiem proved himself with wins vs Djokovic and Nadal at slams and win over Fed at M 1000 Final.
