When I got off sugar, cravings dropped after 7 days.
After a few weeks, they were 99% gone.

Just the normal every day American diet is about 80% carbs, which all metabolize into glucose, aka sugar. It’s highly addictive and you dont realize it until you kick it down to 5% or less.
Sugar is also added to damn near everything. You dont realize it until you start reading/deciphering ingredients.
My wife has suggested that I advise people to taper off the sugar rather than demand cold turkey. She thinks it will be easier on most people. She might be right. But I am having a hard time reconcilling how it’s easier to slowly reduce sugar intake over 60 days than to just grind out 10-14 days and then start the process of seeing the benefits in a rather short period.
A 60 day process just seems like torture by paper cut. Especially when if done my way, by day 60 a person shpuld have easily lost 30+ pounds and be in full ketosis. New habits take 45 days to form on average. Obviously, Im a “rip the bandaid off” kinda person.
I don't think there's a "one size fits all" solution. Both work so it's a matter of figuring out, based on the person, which method is more likely to succeed in the long-run. What's the use of quitting cold turkey if they can't take the withdrawals? That person has a much higher chance of success doing it gradually. For people who can take the sudden shift, so much the better [I'm not aware of any health problems caused by suddenly reducing carb/sugar intake; I would think most would feel dramatically better, especially those on the insulin roller coaster. But I'm no health expert so take my musings with a grain of...wait, not necessarily a good saying. "Be skeptical and do your own research."
What I do off the tennis court to train is just as important as the on court. For every hour on the court I spend an hour in the gym, plyometrics, footwork or agility drills. Normally only play one match a week. It’s all finding the balance that works. Can tell you that doing nothing but going out and playing doubles matches you will slowly but surely see yourself getting worst over the years.
Low carb 85% of the time. Get 100% of the benefit without depriving yourself.
How many hours are you on court per week?

How many hours are you on court per week?
J
Im on the court 14-18 hours per week. No less than 750 serves / week. I play less matches lately because my hitting partners arent helpful. But Im doing more drills & getting reps in. The hitting wall has become my best friend and it’s translating to much better match performances. Appx 6000 strokes per week against the wall.
And my diet is uber strict. I track everything I eat (macros & total calories/expenditure). Mostly fat. Moderate protein. Little to no carbs. Daily intermittent fasting. Losta red meat & dairy.
11% body fat and my limit is about 6-7 hours of tennis in a day if I can line up 3 different hitting partners back-to-back-to-back.
Im really enjoying tennis at the moment.
Not teaching full time any more. Just working with select juniors and collegiate players from time to time. Working full time in another field now that will normally allow me an hour a day workout. Three kids playing sports now.
What's your goal?
J
Wimbledon VetsWhat's your goal?
I dont know anymore. Im just really enjoying tennis because at this rate Im seeing tangible improvement every couple days. It’s very fun to be playing tennis this well and I just wanna see where it leads.
Originally my goal was to get to 5.0 level tennis. The guy who got me into tennis told me I’d never be able to do it, since I started playing too late. So I set that as my goal but I kept getting hurt. My first 2 years I spent about 10 months unable to play due to weird injuries. In 2018 I changed my nutrition and the injuries stopped. So starting this January I’ve been able to consistently play 6 days/week. This year has had some serious low points but since discovering the hitting wall everything just “clicked”.
I dont know if I’ll ever reach 5.0, and I dont care anymore. Im just having a lot of fun getting better. Im competitive versus 4.5’s right now and that is a heck of a accomplishment. If I can notch a win before the end of the year, I’ll be plenty satisfied (until next Spring LOL).
What kind of nutrition did u have before and what kind after?
Any supplements?
Any workout fitness plan you do and/or stretching?
One of the guys at the local courts is out there every day, hitting against the wall.
He is on a mission to seek out the holy grail, the perfect BH. The perfect FH. The perfect serve.
He has watched many Youtube videos, and is always talking about kinetic release pronation,
wrist extension lag snap, and all kinds of crazy **** I don't understand.
He only rallies, and I have never seen him play a set.
Last year, I told him that it's TimeToPlaySets. He's missing out on TENNIS.
I advised him to join a club league so he can experience the many layers of this great sport.
He never did.
He is still on a quest to have the perfect BH, and the ideal isometric rotation angle of the kinetic plane
Well, we rallied the other day,
and then I suggest we play a set.
I only play one way. All out.
(This is why I refuse to play mixed.)
Since he is weaker, my goal was to play a smart & consistent match.
Mostly 2nd serves.
He was having serious trouble returning my serve.
Why? Because he's never returned a serve!
I moved him around.
Drop shots.
Slices.
I topspin lobbed at his BH (not one came back)
I never game him a chance to hit his perfect BH.
I beat him 6-0 6-0.
He was gobsmacked
Finally, I think he got it. He said he's been doing it all wrong,
and that he needs to find people who want to play matches.
He said his current partners never even serve, they only rally.
The double bagel was a revelation for him,
and I think I played a small part in his development.
You must play matches to learn what real tennis is.
It's much more than baseline rallies!
Before? Trained 6 hrs per day. Burning 4000+ calories. Ate relatively standard American diet on cheat days. Paleo most of the week. Did nothing but continue to get fatter.
Then went full keto. But this year switched over to carnivore. Basically, keto is a fat based lifestyle, instead of sugar. And carnivore cuts out all the veggies, because Im learning veggies might not be so healthy. Also cut out all vegetable & seed oils.
No supplements anymore. Not needed. They’re not efficient anyways. Eating organ meat (ie: liver) is far better.
Macro ratios aside, all I worry about is if Im getting enough calories. 2200+ is my tipping point necessary to maintain sustainable energy levels. Nutient dense calories.
No more workout or training plans. Although, prior to switching up my nutrition, it took a solid 60-90 minutes of stretching just to get out of bed every morning. No more. I feel like a teenager.
I never stretch because Im never sore. A large part of that is diet related. It’s also because I dont push past my limits. I do in a day what I can repeat the next day.
The lone exceptions are that I do pullups/hanging therapy to keep my shoulders & back healthy. Essential considering the # of serves Im doing per week. I also started a routine of doing pushups every day. But more for the discipline. Each week I add another rep. Im 64 weeks in. So I do 64 pushups in a row every day. Next week will be 65. Original goal was 52. Now it’s 100. Next year it will probably be 200 LOL. I don’t consider that training.
So what did you replace the sugar with?I thought I had good cardio. I didnt know what real cardio was until I quit sugar.
Most “athletes” are on a glucose burn. The fatigue they’re feeling after an explosive play isnt a lack of cardio.
Quit sugar, then build a real cardio base. And you’ll realize what Im taking about. It’s night & day.
Knowing what I know now, all those 10’s of thousands of miles I spent crosstraining on my road cycle in an attempt to build cardio were a total waste of time while using sugar as my primary energy source.
So you saying you aren't as sore anymore because you changed your diet? So you aren't stretching you say? How old are you now and how old were you when you started?
So what did you replace the sugar with?
Fat. Lots of it. Fat from dairy & red meat.
The body does need glucose. But I get that from excess protein that the liver naturally converts into glucose. This is the proper way to get glucose since it wont throw you out of ketosis.
Without sports, 1200-1400 calories per day is perfectly sufficient. 80% fat / 20% protein.
But with all this tennis, I’ve found my protein needs to be bumped up to 30%. And calories in the 2200-3000 range.
Thats quite high protein intake for a keto diet.
That being said eating no vegetables is pretty st*pid since they not only are mineral/vitamin dense but also have alot of fiber and phytonutrients which are important for health in the long run.
More protein is necessary for athletics. I’ve spoken to several other athletes about this. We all struggled when we let it drop to a “normal” level.
Vegetables have vitamins/minerals but they are not in a format that is easy to metabolize. We dont have the stomachs. Same vitamins & minerals are available in organ meat. Far denser. And far easier to metabolize. And without the toxic lectins. Vegetables are not healthy. The ones we find at grocery stores were specially bred just to be even palatable. They’re nothing like the bitter genetics they were in nature.
Fiber being “healthy” is a myth. If we were meant to eat it, we’d be able to metabolize it. Instead, it just passes thru our system. It offers zero nutritional value and Ive read where it might actually be unhealthy.
What is “stupid” is merely a subjective matter of research. When ruminants eat veggies, they take all those micro nutrients and put them in a format we can metabolize, meat.

Most research shows that meat is unhealthy in big quantities and that vegetable is extremely healthy even in massive quantities.
But no point arguing u prolly read some books or articles about what you say and are convinced no matter what.
I just hope ur health wont suffer in 10 or 20 years.
The more fiber I eat, the leaner I get, and the healthier I feel.
Passing more fiber through your digestive tract has the hidden benefit of limiting and slowing absorption of calories from other foods you eat, especially from carbs.
And for the record, I dont advocate atkins. It doesnt stress the importance of organ meat as a nutrition source.
You will find very few that have liver in their refrigerators and that is a big mistake.
Hold the fava beans.

So you’re saying a controlled study of 25,000 patients conducted by Harvard researchers and published in Lancet is not a real study?Compelling evidence LOL.
A “study” that relies on what people THINK they ate. Awesome science. LOLOLOL.
If that article is what you call evidence, we can stop this discussion right now. Cmon man. That aint a study. It’s a survey with a loosely formulated correlation being turned into a click bait headline. Exactly the type of health advice I’d expect from the BBC no less.
Here is a real study....
Stopping or reducing dietary fiber intake reduces constipation and its associated symptoms

I'm going for the steak! If you're building or replacing muscle cells amino acid is needed and red meats have the highest concentration of amino acids--you can get them in beans but then you're contributing to global warming through flatulence. Pound for pound red meat has the most muscle building/replacing protein/amino acid--Love Sizzler Restaurants, good cheap roadside steaks and their thick sliced garlic bread is to die for. Most research shows that meat is unhealthy in big quantities and that vegetable is extremely healthy even in massive quantities.

Hmmmm I do wonder what people that live in areas with the longest life expectancy eat.
Hmmm lets see they eat alot of fish, meat, vegetables, nuts, eggs, grains, fruits, potatoes, rice... so basically a well balanced diet with protein, carbs and fats.
What can you tell us about their attitude and mindset?
J
I had 3 beers and a pint of cookie dough ice cream for dinner last night and am the odds on favorite to play circles around everyone in this thread.
J
Seems like they probably don't stress too much about food and drinks, and stress that something is unhealthy and might hurt them and worry about what diet and food choices to make in order to be healthy, but rather eat all sorts of foods in moderation and don't stress one bit about it.

eating ice cream is healthy
Eating ice cream is not unhealthy, no food in moderation is unhealthy.
I dare you to read this:
Why “Clean Eating” is a Myth – Complete Human Performance
completehumanperformance.com
I read it. There are multiple falsehoods & conclusions drawn that are inaccurate.
But if it makes you feel better, then that article has served its purpose.
I certainly wont use that poorly written article as a compass. Butvthen again, my agenda isnt to justify anything.
I just let the facts be the guide and I chanfe my behavior accordingly as I learn more.
Ice cream is super high in sugar. It is not healthy in any amount. Will it kill you to eat once in a small dose? Of course not. But neither will heroin. Repeated abuse is the problem.
I think this thread now desperately needs a poll asking who among the thread participants is most likely to suddenly keel over in 15 years.
And theres absolutely nothing unhealthy about sugar, sugar is fuel and energy, athletes eat a ton of sugar in all forms.
Also
Avoiding specific foods or food groups without a rational reason is one of the defining characteristics of orthorexia nervosa, and is common in people with binge eating disorder and anorexia.(93-95)
Or just look back at the past 50 years as evidence.
But I like your suggestion. Let’s take a random poll from people who skim headlines for their nutritional advice & subscribe to 50 yr old studies funded by the sugar industry. Most people of which are likely overweight or malnourished themselves. And let’s let the mob decide who is healthiest LOL.
I’d also like everyone to list the medications they’re on. Considering that 60% of American men suffer from low T. Or how about all the people on anti-depressants? That doesnt bode well for the majority in this thread, or their nutritional habits.
Athletes eat a ton of sugar and they are perfectly healthy, and theres alot of performance benefits to sugar as proven by science compared to not eating sugar.
