Olympics are in doubt

IOC is now debating whether or not it will be safe to hold the Olympics in Tokyo. They may or may not happen depending on the possible pandemic of the coronavirus.

Feared this might prove to be the case. If the Japanese can't get a handle on this thing by the summer then the IOC will have no choice but to postpone.

I guess this would be the first time in history an Olympics has been cancelled because of a world-wide epidemic. :(

Cutoff date for a decision will be in May.

IOC only cares about money, no chance they will cancel

As usual, most problems related to China are their scale and transparency. When China farts in their rivers, it is a tsunami to other nations.

By the time we actually see a real problem in China, it has already became a problem that is too much to be handle by many relatively smaller nations.

When climate will begin to warm up, we'll probably see the virus decline. It's a fact that tropical countries and countries in southern hemisphere are having less trouble to control the spread of the virus.
I think that Tokyo's Olympics will happen normally.

It's not just the Olympics which will be in doubt - any large sporting event in a country with an outbreak will probably be under the same pressures. Look at what's going on now in Italy - they need to contain it or will Rome be under threat? RG? As many people have noted, due to delays in symptoms showing and many people being asymptomatic, you'd imagine this will take a good while to get under control as many places aren't checking arrivals at airports, and with the stresses of life, many people with mild symptoms will go into work and spread it further as many people will presume they just have the standard flu virus or a cold.

All measures should be taken to limit the spread of virus. Economy and everything else is only important when you are alive.

There's no money and no audience for the majority of the sports played at the Olympics. Nobody gives a sh*t about swimming or synchronized swimming or handball or lacrosse or amateur wrestling or tae kwon do or most of the rubbish sports at the Olmypics.
And probably 80% of the athletes at the Olympics are dead broke and only go there to live in the village and participate in orgies or try to get laid by anyone willing! :-D A once in a lifetime opportunity for most of them.

Other events will become in doubt as well as a serious outbreak can occur anywhere at anytime until a vaccine is available. Idiot trump said the vaccine will probably not be "affordable" to everyone. So, only the rich get the vaccine in the US? Also, travel to Asia is out for Canadian athletes.

The Olympics has past its use by date. It's a pity that it still exists. Hopefully the virus will be terminal for it.

Don't forget tennis which 99% of people don't even realize is in the olympics.

Actualy, swimming is a pretty big deal, internationally, as well as Taekwondo to some extent. Handball is very popular in Europe, amateur wrestling used to be too, not sure now.

The IOC has some nerve after all of the health threats in 2016 Rio, including, but not limited to, a sewage treatment system which was not operating due to lack of anyone showing up to work at the plants, and disastrously unsafe water.

Is it opposite day where you are? Wuhan where the virus started is a moderate climate and it's exploded in countries like Iran.

The reason it hasn't spread as much in places like Canada, Russia or USA (yet) is because it's winter.

This is going to get much worse as most developed countries enter spring.

I'm in Brazil and very hot now. If you think in São Paulo, with huge chinese and italian comunities, it's amazing that just one case up to now, actually a man coming from Italy.
Places like Indonesia, nothing, as most tropical countries. Also África just about nothing.
Probably vírus still survives well in moderate climates, but in hot countries probably less.

Unlikely to be a vaccine by then so in my opinion it's a no go. Same with the Asian Tennis swing - no one will want to go there.

They still have 4 nukes that are spilling toxicity in the ocean, their soil, their rivers and air.
surprisingly the Gov is all Yakuza mainly invested in Nukes rather than great Auto industry.
Their lower ranked Chimp-pira (lower minions of their Yakuza) were exposed running instant
startups dealing in Nuke disposal and dumping it at nearby rivers and ravines.

No different as is happening now in India as they develop Thorium reactors with plenty of issues
and waste which end up all over their surroundings with countless cases of affected in dire health.

Foulflu (fowl) should be the least of worries but as Nuke issues are covered up this is
already getting the same legs by the controlled media as the 1976 and 2008 Spamflu.

It is common practice these days to administer a weaker version of a virus strain to fowl in
the aim to get the product to develop their own immunity. Knowing Asian hygiene and
usual Fowl containment / enclosure practices even in the best of labs, air is hard to contain.

I don't believe that the Tokyo Olympics will be canceled due to coronavirus. In 1920, the world fought the Spanish flu, which was a more dangerous disease than coronavirus, yet the Olympics in Antwerp took place.
In the past, the three Summer Olympics were canceled, but all due to World Wars, none because of illness.

That was before people could travel as easily as they can now, refugee crises, and a global economy that could tank due to this. So, don't underestimate what could or might happen. Millions of people together so close to China would not be safe.

They might scale down the olympics but I seriously doubt they will cancel it. The french open might suffer, france banned indoor gatherings with over 5000 people for the time being, but as cases keep growing(over 100 confirmed cases right now with the past weekend the doubles more than doubled) they might resume to more drastic measures. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/amp/world-europe-51690657

Might have to cancel the Paris Masters then if the situation is no better by then.

I don't think what happened in 1920 is of much relevance here and the flu story was repressed by state autorities in the West.

Not running the Olympics would have been something of a clear admission that there was a problem.

Fortunately, contemporary China has not been so irresponsible.

Is this a good example of contemporary China's open-mindedness about the dangers of the virus?

"A Chinese doctor who tried to issue the first warning about the deadly coronavirus outbreak has died, the hospital treating him has said.

Li Wenliang contracted the virus while working at Wuhan Central Hospital.

He had sent out a warning to fellow medics on 30 December but police told him to stop "making false comments".

So you expect an immediate response from the relevant authorities to one doctor?

I'm sorry to tell you but no government in the world works like that.

The Chinese government's response has been astonishingly rapid in the circumstances.

...

And Western governments do prefer to think that AGW is fake science and have done so for decades.

Before that they preferred to think that the idea that smoking causes cancer was nonsensical despite all the whistleblowing.

One could go on endlessly.

Pathetic. It’s a mild virus with little cause for concern. Tired of the pussification of the world and the media blowing everything out of proportion.

You get far sicker with this virus than you do with the flu, so you really don't want to get it even if you're young and healthy.

I love how you make all kinds of excuses for non-Western governments whilst castigating Western governments for anything they do.

I read two types of opinions:

China was too slow and avoidant because it is authoritarian.

China was too quick and draconian because it is authoritarian.

I don't expect an authoritarian governemment to be democratic, and I don't expect a democratic government to be authoritarian.

China is not pretending to be anything other than what it says on the label. We are purporting to be democratic, so we are setting high standards for ourselves.
