IOC is now debating whether or not it will be safe to hold the Olympics in Tokyo. They may or may not happen depending on the possible pandemic of the coronavirus.
Wow!! Seriously unwelcome news! Quite dismaying.IOC is now debating whether or not it will be safe to hold the Olympics in Tokyo. They may or may not happen depending on the possible pandemic of the coronavirus.

It might held in London again (rumors)Wow!! Seriously unwelcome news! Quite dismaying.
Cutoff date for a decision will be in May.Feared this might prove to be the case. If the Japanese can't get a handle on this thing by the summer then the IOC will have no choice but to postpone.
I guess this would be the first time in history an Olympics has been cancelled because of a world-wide epidemic.

Rumours. Shirley. It might held in London again (rumors)
If there is any slight doubt, IOC should cancel or postpone it.
That would be awful. Those athletes will have been training their entire lives. They may never get a chance to participate in an orgy like the like athletes' village again.
It's not just the Olympics which will be in doubt - any large sporting event in a country with an outbreak will probably be under the same pressures. Look at what's going on now in Italy - they need to contain it or will Rome be under threat? RG? As many people have noted, due to delays in symptoms showing and many people being asymptomatic, you'd imagine this will take a good while to get under control as many places aren't checking arrivals at airports, and with the stresses of life, many people with mild symptoms will go into work and spread it further as many people will presume they just have the standard flu virus or a cold.

Damn, now they might relocate the Olympics to Belgrade! [emoji41]So, just as Djo was priming for his best year ever, this happens... POETIC
Don't forget tennis which 99% of people don't even realize is in the olympics. There's no money and no audience for the majority of the sports played at the Olympics. Nobody gives a sh*t about swimming or synchronized swimming or handball or lacrosse or amateur wrestling or tae kwon do or most of the rubbish sports at the Olmypics.
And probably 80% of the athletes at the Olympics are dead broke and only go there to live in the village and participate in orgies or try to get laid by anyone willing! A once in a lifetime opportunity for most of them.

Actualy, swimming is a pretty big deal, internationally, as well as Taekwondo to some extent. Handball is very popular in Europe, amateur wrestling used to be too, not sure now. There's no money and no audience for the majority of the sports played at the Olympics. When climate will begin to warm up, we'll probably see the virus decline. It's a fact that tropical countries and countries in southern hemisphere are having less trouble to control the spread of the virus.
I think that Tokyo's Olympics will happen normally.
Is it opposite day where you are? Wuhan where the virus started is a moderate climate and it's exploded in countries like Iran.
The reason it hasn't spread as much in places like Canada, Russia or USA (yet) is because it's winter.
This is going to get much worse as most developed countries enter spring.
Third most visited? Crikey. No wonder I can barely move when I'm there for the day.If Tokyo has still got problems containing the epidemic by time the Olympics rolls around surly London (third most visited city in the world) will have a problem of its own.

That was before people could travel as easily as they can now, refugee crises, and a global economy that could tank due to this. So, don't underestimate what could or might happen. Millions of people together so close to China would not be safe.I don't believe that the Tokyo Olympics will be canceled due to coronavirus. In 1920, the world fought the Spanish flu, which was a more dangerous disease than coronavirus, yet the Olympics in Antwerp took place.
In the past, the three Summer Olympics were canceled, but all due to World Wars, none because of illness.
They might scale down the olympics but I seriously doubt they will cancel it. The french open might suffer, france banned indoor gatherings with over 5000 people for the time being, but as cases keep growing(over 100 confirmed cases right now with the past weekend the doubles more than doubled) they might resume to more drastic measures. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/amp/world-europe-51690657
Monte carlo?Might have to cancel the Paris Masters then if the situation is no better by then.
Monte carlo?

I don't think what happened in 1920 is of much relevance here and the flu story was repressed by state autorities in the West.
Not running the Olympics would have been something of a clear admission that there was a problem.
Fortunately, contemporary China has not been so irresponsible.
Is this a good example of contemporary China's open-mindedness about the dangers of the virus?
"A Chinese doctor who tried to issue the first warning about the deadly coronavirus outbreak has died, the hospital treating him has said.
Li Wenliang contracted the virus while working at Wuhan Central Hospital.
He had sent out a warning to fellow medics on 30 December but police told him to stop "making false comments".
Pathetic. It’s a mild virus with little cause for concern. Tired of the pussification of the world and the media blowing everything out of proportion.
So you expect an immediate response from the relevant authorities to one doctor?
I'm sorry to tell you but no government in the world works like that.
The Chinese government's response has been astonishingly rapid in the circumstances.
...
And Western governments do prefer to think that AGW is fake science and have done so for decades.
Before that they preferred to think that the idea that smoking causes cancer was nonsensical despite all the whistleblowing.
One could go on endlessly.
I love how you make all kinds of excuses for non-Western governments whilst castigating Western governments for anything they do.
One could go on endlessly.
