I was searching for a Pam Shriver sucks thread just because of this past Oudin interview. Shriver is awful and has poor decorum and lacks professionalism. The crowd even booed her because she was disrepectful of Wickmayer when she was interviewing Wozniacki. Shriver stinks. It pains me to say she may be actually worse than Dick Enberg and Bud Collins.

Another tacky cringe-inducing moment for the US Open. I shudder to think what will happen at the trophy presentations. Can we please bring some prestige back to the slams--particularly the Big-mac slam? What is the need for on-court interviews anyhow? Isn't the post-match interview with the press enough?

Sometimes I think ESPN doesn't have an actual television producer producing the telecast. It's as if they just send out the camera people and the commentators, and the commentators are just free to do whatever the want.
Sometimes it's fun, sometimes the result is just odd.
Pam never has any self-editing ability. She just says what she feels. As I wrote in a previous thread, sometimes it can be illuminating, often it's a disaster. It's always entertaining one way or the other.

You could hear Melanie in the background say "you mean right now??" She was tricked. As for the believe spelling question - what was the point in asking her that??
And then Pam has to relate how she was in the same position as Melanie when she played Evert, but she did a lot better in the beginning. Fine. Except that these girls are hitting the ball 10 times harder than you ever did. It's a little different out there Pammy.

she may have a mic, and the questions may be scripted. but I am sure that the producers did not tell Pam to say it in such a ******bag tone. that part is all pam there.

But the way she said Wickmayers name or whoever she was was hilarious! LMFAO! There was such emphasis and disgust and condescending tone in her voice. Lol even Wozniaki had to stop for a minute and be like "woah, I better not venture down that same path."

I thought her jab at wickmeyer was also in bad taste. Then she played it off after she got booed.

Enberg is boring and doesn't know tennis. Bud has gotten old and can't really think fast enough on his feet for live TV. But neither is petty, arrogant and spiteful like Big Bird.
We should all at least email ESPN - not that I think it will matter... if a white male did it he'd be gone... Pam has nothing to worry about.

You could hear Pam's mic when she approached Oudin about an interview, paraphrasing it was: "Let's do an interview.. I think they would really like to hear from you." It was a polite and warranted request given her "hype". Oudin kept saying "right now? you mean right now?" (duh??) If you don't want to do the interview don't do it, grab your bag and get off the court, it's not an obligation, it was Oudin's choice to do it, yes or no (see when Rafa lost FO09, leaving the court people were asking him for interviews he waved no and walked away). There was no "trick", Melanie was requested an interview and went with it. She didn't have the confidence to deny the media; she should have had coaching and thought about this beforehand, being the hype she is expect an immediate post-match loss interview when it happens. Nor was the interview entirely Pam's choice to request the interview, see: producers, so whatever you think about Pam it's not her choice.

Who needs to be fired is Oudin's coach!! Did you see the interview in the first (or was it second set? it went by so fast!), Pam asked him for his thoughts on the game and he basically had ZERO confidence in her, said she's rattled, talked about the run she's had, as though "this" is the end of the road (when there was still a real chance at coming back in the game). With the money she now has, she should can that guy and get someone behind her, someone who doesn't think the ship is sinking when you see one leak. I would be extremely offended to watch the match back and hear my coach talk like that.
Oh, and isn't it ironic his shirt said "Beleive".... or is it i-before-e? Doh! I can't spell it!!!

Two things:
Pam Shriver - you know, the real thing isn't about how crappy an "analyst" she is, it is more of how inappropriate she was after the Oudin/Wozniacki match. It was entirely classless to mock/dismiss Wickmayer as the upcoming opponent, especially given her admission to not knowing her a few days prior. Let the Tennis player judge her, don't show your own bias. The crowd and Wozniacki were both right to be surprised and boo.
2. Before the Wozniacki interview, the impromptu interview with Oudin was borderline at best. Yeah, you could hear her trying to convince Oudin to say a few words. I don't have a problem with trying to get her to say a thank you to her new fans. However, and Shriver should know this being a world class player herself, Oudin is 17, on the biggest stage in the world for the first time and just lost a match MINUTES ago where she was frustrated from the start. How about a little respect for a young girl seemingly overwhelmed by things. If it was Shrivers own teenage daughter, she would want people to back off for at LEAST a few minutes. producers or not, Shriver could have much better tact than to hijack the poor girl. At the least give her time to compose herself rather than pressure her into an interview even as she could be seen with tears swelling. Thats why there is a post-game press conference!!

I backed up my dvr a few times - some of the things Pam was saying to coax her to give an interview were amusing: "right now this moment is very important for you, etc" How melodramatic.
I think if someone tried to get an oncourt interview with Shriver after a loss when she was on tour, she would have told them to insert the microphone where the sun don't shine.
Its funny to me to see all these players that were so grumpy when they played(Gilbert, Mac, Shriver) giving pointers on how players today should handle all this stuff.

First of all, Pam Shriver would have been instructed by the Producer/Director to try to interview Melanie. Secondly, I am pretty sure the crowd was booing because of the reputation that Wickmayer has.

I agree, she's wacky, brutally honest, and entertaining (in good and bad ways). But, her Wickmayer comment, no matter her intent, came off terribly.
I don't think she should be fired, but she should apologize privately to Wickmayer and explain herself.
That is creepy - I felt sorry and sad for her dad and then it hit me: "yeah, you and my wife got it on, but you can go ahead and still coach my daughter." Wow.
Exactly thats the point of view I had in mind that Pam wasn't being offensive in any way shape or form. She gave Oudin an opportunity to thank the fans and actually Oudin denied the interview at the start before Pam persuaded her to do so. Also Pam was just giving the little sister a spelling bee contest and she failed miserably.

I don't think her dad brought up anything. He filed for divorce in July of 2008, and reporters dug all this up through the court records.
My favourite comment from her so far this tournament was during Serena Williams match a couple of days ago..

The Oudin personal info is unfortunate, other than sensational interest, not sure that piece of her and her family's private life really has a place in the public. On Shriver (or at least I think that was her as I was flipping between USOPEN.org and ESPN360 coverage), what made me cringe most was last night's stadium seat interview of Alec Baldwin during a critical game in Oudin's second set -- I simply couldn't believe it.
What makes this even more unfortunate is that the mother realized something was about to happen and had the records sealed, but not before SI had already viewed them and went with the story.
As Melanie's rise to fame brought attention to the family, Oudin's mother, Leslie, apparently sensed that their divorce records might go public. Newsday has learned she filed a motion with the Cobb County (Ga.) Superior Court two days ago asking that all documents be sealed from the public's view.
She cited "embarrassment," a spokesman for the court clerk told Newsday Thursday morning, and the judge granted the motion.
However, it was too late, as reporters from Sports Illustrated already had seen the public records, which were available on Cobb County (Ga.) Superior Court web site. That is, until Judge Robert E. Flournoy, III ordered the records sealed on Wednesday as Leslie's request.

First it was the timing of the interview -- those watching really wanted to focus on the match, not hear from a random actor in the crowd. Second, she drew out some drivel from him on how the loser would take something from the experience, as if an actor, and I have nothing against the profession, or this actor in particular, has some noteworthy athletic insight. I even think he asked her something about playing at night and why it might be different. She said the focus was on the stadium court because simultaneous matches weren't being played on the outside courts. IMHO, the whole exchange felt forced, was completely out of place, and distracted from the contest, of which at the time I was sort of interested in watching. . .. :shock:

Well, she has already been defaulted once this year for hitting a line umpire in the face with a ball in Florida. She is known for having bad conduct issues on court.
