Polyester strings for a 6-year old junior?

Hi there -

My 6 year old son is just starting with junior match play and having a lot of fun with it. He's using a 23" Wilson, nothing fancy. It came with a standard nylon string, which has been fine.

I'm wondering if there is some wisdom out there on the age at which it makes sense to try polyester for help with spin? My instinct is to stick with softer multifilament strings until he is in his early teens.

Would really appreciate any thoughts and experiences that anyone has to share on this.

Thank you,

Ben

Your instincts are correct. Stick eith the muti for now. Poly is not really going to benefit a kid until they can hit through the ball. 13/14 is about time to think about going to a poly/hybrid.

i would think a poly would just set him up for arm problems later in his career best of luck. i honestly dont think that the money for multi is any better for a 6 year old than a synthetic gut

If he strung really low, than he wouldn't have a problem arm-wise, but I agree that it doesn't change the fact that he won't get any benefits out of poly.

Yes it is. If you tell a kid you spent extra money on a multi, you must tell him about the additional expenditure. The young player will feel that monetary stress and will perform better because of the pressure. After all, this is an investment in the future!

Many really good syn guts out there, and reasonable. Go to the string thread. Prince syn gut is still the #1selling string in America. It's used as a measurement standard by the U S Racquet Stringers Assn..
