Pro Supex Big Ace MICRO 1.15mm - my thoughts

I've got some reels of the Big Ace Micro 1.15mm and it plays like a dream! I really like the tremendous amount of feel and feedback from it. Best of all, it's extremely responsive and has tons of spin potential.

Because of its thinness, it's quite flexible and has some nice qualities of a syn gut, but yet has the traditional feel of a poly. It's really hard to describe and you've really got to play it to know what I mean.

Durability has not been an issue too because the material is high grade copolyester. I'd expected it to be sawn through relatively quickly, but after playing more than 30 hours with a full setup of Big Ace Micro, there has been no notching at all.

I snapped blue gear in only 5 hours of play but I liked the feel. If it was more durable but still had the same feel I would buy as much as I could. But it's impposible because you always have to sacrifice playability for durability.

Sorry to hear it snapped so quickly. Was it a hybrid or full poly setup? Where did it snap? In the middle of the stringbed or at a grommet?

You are quite right to say that there is an inverse relation between playability and durability. But for flat hitters, it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

What type of grip style do you play with? Western? Semi-western?

Full Poly, middle of string bed, semi-western, heavy kicker serve(this is probably why).

Jonolau, A couple of questions: 1)How does your reference tension compare on the Big Ace Micro 1.15 vs the Big Ace 1.22 - higher for the Micro maybe by 2 pounds? 2) Do you have the USRSA stiffness values for the Pro Supex synthetic guts? Thanks, I have really been enjoying several of the Pro Supex strings for the past year - great service and great product!

I Highly agree that this is the best co polyester out there. This is now my PERMENANT setup, I strung it at 62 on of my instincs, and the scond 55. I am still looking into finding the right tension.

hi jonolau,

you seem to be experienced with pro supex string. Can you shed some light oon the poly power soft, especially how the thinner gauges compare to something like the big ace micro

I have a reel of Poly Power Soft 1.15mm. This is a very soft and comfortable poly, which is reminiscent of synthetic gut, and plays just like Gosen Polylon SP. The different between Poly Power Soft with Polylon SP is that PPS has been designed with much better tension maintenance.

This means that with PPS you get comfortable softness, huge amounts of control due to the low elasticity of poly, and good tension maintenance which helps it last much longer than older generation polys like Polylon SP, or synthetic guts which lose their feel quite quickly.

hey jonolau...thanks for the review...

I was presented with Big Ace a month ago probably and played with 17 gauge... and it felt like a dream during the first hits, excellent top spin, control and a marvellous crispy sound... how does the 1.15mm compare to the 17 gauge one ? is 1.15mm like what ? 18 L ?

You got ton of feel from blue gear ? issue with me was that i was no feel at all from blue gear. what about big ace ? do you think you get better feel from big ace ??

Bottom line is: If you hit with extreme western and with lots of topspin, Big Ace Micro is not for you. Durability will be the biggets issue.

This thin gauge is better suited to flat hitters who like to drive the ball. It gives lots of feel and feedback from the thinner gauge. Same thing for Blue Gear.

For those who hit with lots of topspin and need durability with good comfort and feedback, Big Ace 1.22-1.28 is more suited.

Wow thanks for the feedback, just what I wanted to ask. But wait... Blue Gear is for flat hitters? I've always wanted to try the string but I never thought it'd be suitable for me because I'm a flat hitter.

I'm also a flat hitter and I love this string. When I do want to brush up on the ball, it gives me additonal help in generating topspin.

On the flip side, there are some extreme topspinners I know who don't really fancy BG as they get too much topspin. However, this is also a matter of personal preferece as my neighbour who is our top national junior player is using BG as his main string, and he hits tons of topspin with full extreme Western!

I was getting great topspin with BG but i had no idea where my volleys were going cause no feel. Is it possible to hit good volleys with this string.?

As with any part of your game, it really does boil down to technique, physical and mental condition.

I know for sure there are some days when I can really volley like a monster. And other days I play like a dog. :(

Which string has more power, jonalou, The big ACE 1.18 or Signum SPPP 1.18 string ??

I personally found Big Ace to be better over SPPP 1.18. SPPP just gave me too many problems when stringing (snaps whilst tensioning), and has snapped at the gromemts whilst playing. I also felt that it had a very "brittle" feel on groundstrokes and did not inspire confidence.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, we will get rid of that crappy SPPP string once and for all. and i will hybrid with Big ace, and also it should look pretty too, bright RED with white natural gut string. also i am going to try the Kirschbaum as well

Any more thoughts about this string?
I was thinking of getting the micro version or the 18g, im not sure

Is Pro Supex Big Ace MICRO 1.15mm more comfortable and powerful than Pro Supex Big Ace?

Lloyd & Ripper,

My views: The strange thing is that though both strings are supposed to be made from exactly the same material with thickness being the only difference, the playing characteristics and feel and quite different.

Big Ace 1.25mm - When compared to the 1.15mm Big Ace Micro (18L), BA 1.25 feels softer and plays more like a comfort poly, with a little more ball pocketing.

BA Micro 1.15mm - I love using BAM especially when swinging hard and fast on flat forehands. It feels crisp and the thinness sends lots of feedback from the stringbed into the hand. Bear in mind that feedback is different from vibration. I feel as if my hand is directly connected to the string, thus offering an impression of better directional and kinestic control. I also feel that there is better ball bite. Perhaps this is a psychological effect that thinner strings should have better bite. I do notice a little more kick on topspin forehands and a little more bite on slices. This is definitely a FUN string.

However, for those who want better durability and physical/psychological comfort, Big Ace 1.22-1.25mm would be a better choice.

I'm not sure what you mean by 18g. I do know that 1.15mm is considered 18L, and not 18. What is the width of your 18g, and what colour is it?

I think you may have 1.18mm Big Ace as Big Ace Micro 1.15mm is only produced in Silver Grey.

You are right, then what about that Micro ?? Why doesn't stringdepot carry it ?? did not see it in their website. and Is micro better ? does it give you more spin than BA ? and what about the feel ? which is better

Jonalou, since this string is so close to its big brother BA. It would have been alot better if you compared the 2 strings to each other by breaking down the categories like power, spin, control, feel and vibration, and so on. I know you don't like saying which is better so you don't have to do that. just say which has more in each category. That would be alot more of a productive REVIEW than just saying it plays like a dream. i have no idea what that means. String depot states that it is basically exactly same string as BA but micro is supposed have more power. is this true ??? and i am ASSUMING that micro has more spin since it is thinner ???

I appreciate your fine reviews on this string as I'm yet to try it. you do make it sound interesting. Im just wondering if you truly belive this is a superior product or if you are just promoting this string for personal gain since you sell Pro Supex exclusively on the big auction website. I also noticed that you no longer are using the auction account with the name of jonolau and have created a new and different one.

after 6 month of using BA 1.25 on my fischer mspeed UL, I've just tried the BAM 1.15 on my new head i.prestige xl....
I love the feel of that string...it's stiffer than BA but stillc omfortable as the racket is not stiff at all. I've played 3 sets of hard hitting without any pain...
It's quite comparable to the Kirschbaum Pro line II 1.18 ...BAM has less ball pocketing feel but tension holding is better...

Let's put it this way, I've tried many strings out there and fell in love with Pro Supex for it's quality and price. It has amazing performance with very little hype. This is why I decided to buy different types for my home stringing business. The reason why I changed the name is to have no connections touted openly and to avoid these types of possible insinuations.

I've tested different brands and do my best to provide a subjective review. If another brand has better cost-to-performance, I will not hesitate to recommend it.

I always thought that Pro Supex Rep/Dealer located in US. I just got a three racquets to demo from them, while I'm in Florida for Orange Bowl. One of racquets is really good.
The strings seems like a very good as well. And I personally loved Micro: a lot of spin and feel. Something to think about it.
If your style of the stroke spin(slice) and placement they just might be for you.

I'm now using Blue Gear on my mains.

How long do the "gears" last you? Do you use them in a hybrid, if so do they cut into the crosses more than a round poly would?

I used a full set of it, thought it was okay, i hit with a fair bit of spin anyway, so i don't really care for the added spin.

PED

The gears last a decent amount of time and there is still plenty of spin on tap after they wear down as BG is a poly after all and the stiffness really helps provide the spin. In the end, I'd rather use BA as I think you can drive the ball flat a bit better and it's cheaper.

Lloyd: did you use the 16 or 17 in blue gear, the 16 as a full job is nice.

I have a set of 1.25mm to try soon.

I really want to try micro as well. Anybody up for a trade?

Im looking for: Spin, control, low-medium power, medium/stiffer feel, don't really mind about durability. What you think?

Micro or normal?

barcy,

Micro will give you lots of fun without sacrificing on durability. But though 1.25 is thicker, it doesn't lack feel whilst offering great durability too, and control would be perceived as being slightly better.

Hope this helps.
